The effect of random precipitation times on the scavenging rate for tropospheric nitric acid

A model for the effective scavenging rate of a soluble species has been developed. The model takes into account the possibility of positive as well as negative correlations between departures from the mean of the scavenging rate and species concentration. The model is demonstrated for the case of late afternoon rainout of nitric acid occurring just prior to the nighttime cessation of its chemical production. The calculations give effective scavenging rates which are about a factor of 2 to 3 greater than those calculated using the models of Rodhe and Grandell (1972) and Giorgi and Chameides (1985).

Coherent electromagnetic waves in the presence of a half space of randomly distributed scatterers

The present investigation of coherent field propagation notes, upon solving the Foldy-Twersky integral equation for a half-space of small spherical scatterers illuminated by a plane wave at oblique incidence, that the coherent field for a horizontally-polarized incident wave exhibits reflectivity and transmissivity consistent with the Fresnel formula for an equivalent continuous effective medium. In the case of a vertically polarized incident wave, both the vertical and longitudinal waves obtained for the coherent field have reflectivities and transmissivities that do not agree with the Fresnel formula.

Impact of random pointing and tracking errors on the design of coherent and incoherent optical intersatellite communication links

Given the rms transmitter pointing error and the desired probability of bit error (PBE), it can be shown that an optimal transmitter antenna gain exists which minimizes the required transmitter power. Given the rms local oscillator tracking error, an optimum receiver antenna gain can be found which optimizes the receiver performance. The impact of pointing and tracking errors on the design of direct-detection pulse-position modulation (PPM) and heterodyne noncoherent frequency-shift keying (NCFSK) systems are then analyzed in terms of constraints on the antenna size and the power penalty incurred. It is shown that in the limit of large spatial tracking errors, the advantage in receiver sensitivity for the heterodyne system is quickly offset by the smaller antenna gain and the higher power penalty due to tracking errors. In contrast, for systems with small spatial tracking errors, the heterodyne system is superior because of the higher receiver sensitivity.

The influence of nonlinear damping on the random response of panels by time domain simulation

The effects of nonlinear damping on the large-deflection response of symmetrically laminated composite panels is studied by time-domain simulation in an attempt to quantify experimentally observed phenomena. A single-mode deflection approach is used in the equations of motion and in the linear and nonlinear damping models. The probability, peak-probability, and spectral-density data are compiled for both strains and deflection. The rms responses as a function of input excitation level are also obtained and compared to linear, equivalent-linearization, and Fokker-Planck equation solutions.

Remarks on a dynamical higher-order theory of laminated plates and its application in random vibration response

This paper presents an analysis of the equations governing the dynamics of shear-deformable composite plates, without recourse to a variational procedure. It is noted that the operator associated with the governing equations is nonsymmetric; using a first-order perturbation technique, it is shown to be positive-definite. In addition, using the biorthogonality condition, the dynamic response of the plate is formulated.

Fast Magnetoresistive Random-Access Memory

Magnetoresistive binary digital memories of proposed new type expected to feature high speed, nonvolatility, ability to withstand ionizing radiation, high density, and low power. In memory cell, magnetoresistive effect exploited more efficiently by use of ferromagnetic material to store datum and adjacent magnetoresistive material to sense datum for readout. Because relative change in sensed resistance between "zero" and "one" states greater, shorter sampling and readout access times achievable.

The formation and structure of fluffy cometary nuclei from random accumulation of grains

It is now generally accepted that solid bodies in the solar system are formed by accumulation of solid grains. The mechanism of formation of smaller bodies, less than some tens of kilometers in radius, is investigated. These include planetesimals and comets. Results indicate that essentially complete agglomeration occurs for relative velocities of less than about 1000 cm/sec and fairly efficient mass build-up occurs up to 5000/cm. These velocities are consistent with current models of the primordial solar nebula. The temperature produced in a collision will be under 20 K. For ice/dust grains, the resultant aggregates will be of low density with their volatiles preserved. Cometary nuclei with radii of a few km will be irregularly shaped and fragile with low mean density and significant interanl density variations. The characteristics of such a structure could account for the observed properties of comets.

Discrete random media techniques for microwave modeling of vegetated terrain

Microwave remote sensing models of vegetated terrain are investigated. The problem is to determine canopy characteristics such as biomass, canopy height, and the moisture of the underlying soil. The report describes a discrete scatter model which has been employed to model backscatter in the active (radar) case and to model brightness temperature in the passive (radiometric) case. The acquisition of ground truth data is discussed, as well as the comparison of theory and experiment. The overall conclusion of the work has been that the discrete scatter model in conjunction with efficient scatter algorithms and the distorted Born approximation is a most appropriate methodology to use for modeling purposes in the microwave region.

Altimetry and lidar using AlGaAs lasers modulated with pseudo-random codes

We have demonstrated a prototype laser altimeter and lidar which uses a low power AlGaAs laser modulated with a pseudorandom noise (PN) code, a 20 cm diameter telescope, and a photon counting receiver. Measurements to tree canopies over a 400 m horizontal path show strong signals with 5.3 mW average power and a 6.4 msec averaging time. Computer simulations predict lidar performance for various types of scattering performance.

Designing laminated composites using random search techniques

A computer program called UWCODA is presented. UWCODA is intended to assist in the design, analysis and optimization of composite plates. UWCODA combines a state-of-the-art global optimization algorithm (Improving Hit and Run) with classical lamination theory. Optimization results are presented for simple loading conditions as well as for complex, biaxial load conditions. The computer code proved to be very effective in the design of composite plates.

The random component of planetary rotation

In the present computation of the rms rotational angular momentum accumulated by a planet as a result of the stochastic off-center impacts of large planetesimals over the course of the accretionary epoch, planets' observed spin periods and obliquities were used to estimate the masses of the largest bodies which impacted each planet during its history. Several planets have likely undergone at least one collisional event with a body having over 5 percent of the planet's ultimate mass, thereby supporting giant-impact theories of the origins of the moon and Charon as well as the explanation of Mercury's excess Fe in terms of the partial collisional stripping of its mantle.

The spectrum of random magnetic fields in the mean field dynamo theory of the Galactic magnetic field

The fluctuation spectrum that must arise in a mean field dynamo generation of galactic fields if the initial field is weak is considered. A kinetic equation for its evolution is derived and solved. The spectrum evolves by transfer of energy from one magnetic mode to another by interaction with turbulent velocity modes. This kinetic equation is valid in the limit that the rate of evolution of the magnetic modes is slower than the reciprocal decorrelation time of the turbulent modes. This turns out to be the case by a factor greater than 3. Most of the fluctuation energy concentrates on small scales, shorter than the hydrodynamic turbulent scales. The fluctuation energy builds up to equipartition with the turbulent energy in times that are short compared to the e-folding time of the mean field. The turbulence becomes strongly modified before the dynamo amplification starts. Thus, the kinematic assumption of the mean dynamo theory is invalid. Thus, the galactic field must have a primordial origin, although it may subsequently be modified by dynamo action.

High speed magneto-resistive random access memory

A high speed read MRAM memory element is configured from a sandwich of magnetizable, ferromagnetic film surrounding a magneto-resistive film which may be ferromagnetic or not. One outer ferromagnetic film has a higher coercive force than the other and therefore remains magnetized in one sense while the other may be switched in sense by a switching magnetic field. The magneto-resistive film is therefore sensitive to the amplitude of the resultant field between the outer ferromagnetic films and may be constructed of a high resistivity, high magneto-resistive material capable of higher sensing currents. This permits higher read voltages and therefore faster read operations. Alternate embodiments with perpendicular anisotropy, and in-plane anisotropy are shown, including an embodiment which uses high permeability guides to direct the closing flux path through the magneto-resistive material. High density, high speed, radiation hard, memory matrices may be constructed from these memory elements.
