Combined Techno-Economic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment of an Integrated Direct Air Capture System with Advanced Algal Biofuel Production

The continuous increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere since the First Industrial Revolution correlates convincingly with the ongoing rise of the Earth's global average temperature contributing to climate change. As a response, carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies are being implemented to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions by capturing CO2 from high emitting point sources, such as power plants, refineries, and cement factories, and subsequently buried in geological formations underground for long term storage. Recently direct air capture (DAC) has emerged as a promising alternative technology that captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere for use or sequestration. This study investigates the potential synergistic benefits of integrating a solid amine-based DAC system with advanced algal biofuel production in photobioreactors (PBRs). DAC utilization allows the removal of atmospheric CO2 while also decoupling algae production facilities from anthropogenic point CO2 sources and avoiding the cost and logistics challenges of transporting CO2 long distances to remote facilities. Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment are performed to assess the economic and environmental benefits of heat and mass integration between the DAC and the PBR for biofuel production. The DAC-PBR system integration also considers on-site flue gas handling options, DAC capital utilization, the tradeoff between centralization or decentralization of key unit operations, and the PBR array. This presentation will discuss how optimizing DAC-PBR process integration can enhance the algal biofuel's economic and environmental sustainability and the prospect of DAC enabling the circular carbon economy.

Circular Economy for Building Materials

The building sector is the one of the largest consumers of raw materials and producers of waste in the United States. NREL is working to minimize waste from building construction by conducting research on new materials, construction, and building durability, as well as developing new design principles and modeling tools. These efforts are designed to help transform the "linear economy" - where materials are simply used and disposed - into a circular one.

Geothermal Deep Direct-Use for Low-Carbon Heating: A Case Study at Cornell University

Cornell University is developing a geothermal deep direct-use system to provide reliable, low carbon, and cost-competitive heating for its main campus in Ithaca, New York. This geothermal system, also referred to as Earth Source Heat, would provide the majority of the campus heating load and represents a key pillar for the university to become carbon neutral by 2035. Over the last 10 years, numerous desktop, seismic, and geophysical studies have been undertaken at Cornell to characterize the local subsurface, predict long-term reservoir performance, design the integration into the existing district heating network, and estimate capital and levelized costs. Recently, the university received funding for drilling an observatory well to obtain in-situ subsurface data (e.g., reservoir temperatures, pressures, fluid chemistry, stress field), significantly lowering subsurface uncertainty and de-risking the project. Drilling of the test well is planned for fall 2021. This paper provides an overview and status of the project, including a summary of past studies and a description of the proposed well and planned testing activities.

FY 2022 Site Sustainability Plan

The United States Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a recognized leader in sustainability, as evidenced by its ongoing optimization of resources in campus operations, including water, energy, waste, and purchasing, as well as continued commitment to meeting federal mandates and goals. NREL's dedication to sustainability supports the laboratory's success by applying what is learned through research and development to campus facilities and infrastructure systems. The Site Sustainability Plan provides a road map for all site planning and development. NREL drives the adoption of these initiatives to a global audience by conducting business operations that demonstrate the incorporation of clean energy practices. NREL will continue to develop a sustainable and resilient campus while growing greater technological capabilities to advance the national renewable energy marketplace.

Storage Futures Study: Key Learnings for the Coming Decades

The Storage Futures Study (SFS) is a multiyear research project that explored the role and impact of energy storage in the evolution and operation of the U.S. power sector. The SFS examined the potential impact of energy storage technology advancement on the deployment of utility-scale storage and the adoption of distributed storage, and the implications for future power system infrastructure investment and operations. The research findings and supporting data were published across a series of six reports, culminating in the final, seventh publication that draws upon findings from across the study, previous work, and additional analysis to identify eight key learnings about the coming decades. This presentation is from an NREL webinar to discuss the eight key learnings.

Molecular Modeling of Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

Disruption in weather patterns, increase in the average global temperature due to the over-utilization of fossil fuels and global warming, has involuntarily shifted our focus towards clean energy production. Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) can generate H2 gas (clean energy) with highest efficiency. This poster includes modeling and challenges related to the electrolyte material used the SOECs.

NREL's 100% Clean Electricity by 2035 Study

The 100% Clean Electricity by 2035 Study evaluates a variety of scenarios that achieve a 100% clean electricity system (defined as zero net greenhouse gas emissions) in 2035 that could put the United States on a path to economywide net-zero emissions by 2050. The scenarios focus primarily on the supply of clean electricity, including technical requirements, challenges, and benefit and cost implications. The study results highlight multiple pathways to 100% clean electricity in which benefits exceed costs. The study does not comprehensively evaluate all options to achieve 100% clean electricity, and it focuses largely on supply-side options. This summary deck provides a high-level overview of the key findings.
