Casimir interactions between two parallel graphene sheets carrying steady-state drift currents

Here, we investigate the fluctuation-induced Casimir interactions between two parallel graphene sheets carrying steady-state drift currents. The graphene properties are modeled based on the shifted Fermi disk model to capture the nonequilibrium optical response of the system. We find that the drift current introduces a repulsive correction to the perpendicular to the layers Casimir interaction, thereby reducing the overall attractive force. Although the correction is repulsive, it does not overcome the underlying attraction between the layers. It also generates a lateral force that opposes the carrier flow direction. Both contributions are studied in terms of distance and drift velocity functionalities showing pathways for Casimir force control.

Measurement of single- and double-differential cross sections for mesonless charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with final-state protons using the MicroBooNE detector

Charged-current neutrino interactions with final states containing zero mesons and at least one proton are of high interest for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, we have obtained the first double-differential cross-section measurements of this channel for muon neutrino scattering on an argon target with a leading proton momentum threshold of 0.25 GeV/𝑐. We also report a flux-averaged total cross section of 𝜎 = (11.8±1.2) × 10 −38 cm 2 /Ar and several single-differential measurements which extend and improve upon previous results. Statistical and systematic uncertainties are quantified with a full treatment of correlations across 359 kinematic bins, including correlations between distributions describing different observables. The resulting dataset provides the most detailed information obtained to date for testing models of mesonless neutrino-argon scattering.

Constraining neutrino-nucleon form factors with charged-current scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider

Next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment require percent-level knowledge of neutrino-nucleon interaction cross sections. The nucleon axial form factor 𝐹 𝐴 ⁡(𝑄 2 ), parametrized by the axial mass 𝑀 𝐴 , is the dominant source of uncertainty in the quasielastic channel, and the parity-violating structure function 𝑥⁢𝐹 3 is poorly constrained on free nucleons. We propose using charged-current (CC) electron-proton scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to address both problems simultaneously. The measurement exploits three key features of the EIC: (1) helicity-selective electron bunches provide in situ electromagnetic background rejection; (2) a longitudinally polarized proton target enables extraction of 𝐹 𝐴 ⁡(𝑄 2 ) through the target-spin asymmetry 𝐴 𝑈⁢𝐿 ; and (3) the 𝑦-distribution leverage in CC deep inelastic scattering (DIS) separates 𝐹 2 and 𝑥⁢𝐹 3 on a free proton, without nuclear corrections. Using a Fisher information analysis at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =141 GeV with 500 fb −1 of integrated luminosity, we project the Cramér-Rao statistical floor of 𝛿⁢𝑀 𝐴 ≈0.03 GeV (3%). Incorporating first-order realistic detector effects, such as zero-degree calorimeter acceptance, 𝑄 2 smearing (5%), and background noise from helicity subtraction, the projected sensitivity is severely background-limited due to the small signal-to-background ratio (𝑆/𝐵 ≈ 3 ×10 −4 ) in the elastic channel. Achieving competitive sensitivity (𝛿⁢𝑀 𝐴 ≈ 0.14 GeV) would require ∼10 −7 background suppression, 3 orders of magnitude beyond current projections. The CC DIS 𝑦 distribution provides subpercent extraction of 𝑥⁢𝐹$^{𝑊^{−}}_{3}$ over 0.05 < 𝑥 < 0.5, representing the most robust electroweak measurement in the near term.

Nonlinear dynamics and dissipation of a curvilinear vortex driven by a strong time-dependent Meissner current

Here, we report numerical simulations of large-amplitude oscillations of a trapped vortex line under a strong ac magnetic field $\textit{H(t) = H}$ sin$\textit{ωt}$ parallel to the surface. The power dissipated by an oscillating vortex segment driven by the surface ac Meissner currents was calculated by taking into account the nonlinear vortex line tension, vortex mass, and a nonlinear Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) viscous drag coefficient $\textit{η(v)}$. We show that the LO decrease of $\textit{η(v)}$ with the vortex velocity $\textit{v}$ can radically change the field dependence of the surface resistance R i ( H ) caused by trapped vortices. At low frequencies, $R_i(H)$ exhibits a conventional increase with $\textit{H}$, but as $\textit{ω}$ increases, the surface resistance becomes a nonmonotonic function of $\textit{H}$ which decreases with $\textit{H}$ at higher fields. The effects of frequency, pin spacing, and the mean-free path $l_i$ on the field dependence of $R_i(H)$ were calculated. It is shown that, as the surface gets dirtier and $l_i$ decreases, the anomalous drop of $R_i(H)$ with $\textit{H}$ shifts to lower fields which can be much smaller than the lower critical magnetic field. Our numerical simulations also show that the LO decrease of $\textit{η(v)}$ with $\textit{v}$ can cause a vortex bending instability at high field amplitudes and frequencies, giving rise to the formation of dynamic kinks along the vortex. Measurements of $R_i(H)$ caused by sparse vortices trapped perpendicular to the surface can offer opportunities to investigate an extreme nonlinear dynamics of vortices driven by strong current densities up to the depairing limit at low temperatures. The behavior of $R_i(H)$, which can be tuned by varying the rf frequency or concentration of nonmagnetic impurities, is not masked by strong heating effects characteristic of dc or pulse transport measurements.

Independence of the spin current from the Néel vector orientation in antiferromagnet CoO

Spin pumping from ferromagnetic Fe into antiferromagnetic CoO across a Ag spacer layer was studied using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in Py/CoO/Ag/Fe/Ag(001). The thin Py film on top of CoO permits an alignment of the CoO Neél vector through field cooling in two otherwise equivalent [110] and [110] crystalline axes which are parallel and perpendicular to the Fe magnetization direction, respectively. Fe FMR linewidth is measured as a function of Ag thickness in 10-20-GHz frequency range and in 180-330 K temperature range. Furthermore, we find that there exists an anisotropy in the Fe FMR damping for parallel and perpendicular alignment of the Fe and CoO spins. However, such anisotropic damping exists only at thin Ag thickness where there exists a magnetic interlayer coupling between Fe and CoO, and vanishes at thick Ag thickness where the interlayer coupling becomes negligible but permitting spin-current transmission into CoO. Our result indicates the absence of anisotropic spin current for parallel and perpendicular alignment of the Fe and CoO spin axes.

Current distributions by moving vortices in superconductors

We take account of normal currents that emerge when vortices move. Abrikosov vortices in the bulk and Pearl vortices in thin films are considered. Velocity dependent distributions of both normal and persistent currents are studied in the frame of time-dependent London equations. In thin films near the Pearl vortex core, these distributions are intriguing in particular.

Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrafast exciton shift current in the noncentrosymmetric semiconductor CdS

The charge-neutral exciton has been predicted to carry genuine photocurrent due to the geometric Berry phase of the electronic bands, if the inversion symmetry in a crystal is broken. Here we detect such exciton shift current in a prototypical polar semiconductor CdS by using terahertz emission spectroscopy. A distinct peak emerges in the photocurrent spectra at the energy of the exciton resonance, which is demonstrated to result from the distinct displacements of electrons and holes in real space within the excitons to produce a finite transient charge current at subpicosecond time scale. Our findings elucidate the Berry phase physics of the charge-neutral photoexcitations and also shed light on the novel energy harvesting mechanism by exciton generation.

Three-dimensional stacking of canted antiferromagnetism and pseudospin current in undoped Sr 2 IrO 4 : Symmetry analysis and microscopic model realization

Recent optical second-harmonic generation experiments observed unexpected broken spatial symmetries in the undoped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2 IrO4, leading to intensive debates on the nature of its ground state. Here we propose that it is a canted antiferromagnetism (CAF) with a hidden order of circulating staggered pseudospin current. Symmetry analysis shows that a proper c-axis stacking of the CAF and the pseudospin current lead to a magnetoelectric coexistence state that breaks the twofold rotation, inversion, and time-reversal symmetries, consistent with experimental observations. We construct a three-dimensional Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling and structural distortion for the five localized 5d Wannier orbitals centered at Ir sites and demonstrate the microscopic realization of the desired coexistence state in a wide range of band parameters via a combination of self-consistent Hartree-Fock and variational calculations.

Current algebra approach to two-dimensional interacting chiral metals

In this study, we reinterpret the chiral U(N) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model at level k>1 in (1+1) dimensions as an interacting chiral metal in two space dimensions. In this reinterpretation, spatial translations along one of the spatial dimensions in the two-dimensional chiral metal arise from a generator of the U(N) symmetry of the WZW model. The WZW model at k=1 is equivalent to Balents and Fisher's free chiral metal. Here, the U(N) symmetry corresponds to the IR symmetry of a chiral Fermi gas with (half of a) Fermi surface, with N equal to the number of points on the Fermi surface. We argue that exactly solvable interacting generalizations occur for levels k>1. Importantly, these interacting chiral metals maintain the U(N) symmetry of the free system. We calculate two-point correlation functions of the single-particle fermion operator, the U⁡(1) number density, and current operators in these theories for general k. We find that interactions (k>1) produce 1/N corrections to scaling of the single-particle fermion operator as N→∞ and renormalize the amplitudes of the density and current two-point functions. This construction illustrates the ersatz Fermi liquid proposal of Else et al.

Giant nonreciprocity of current-voltage characteristics of noncentrosymmetric superconductor–normal metal–superconductor junctions

Here we develop a theory of nonreciprocal current-voltage (I-U) characteristics in noncentrosymmetric superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions. We show that at small voltages the nonreciprocal features of the I-U characteristics can be expressed entirely in terms of the dependence of the nonreciprocal part of the quasiparticle density of states in the normal metal part of the junction on the order parameter phase difference chi across the junction. The amplitude of the nonreciprocity in this regime is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time $\tau_{in}$, and can be much larger than that in normal materials, where it is proportional to the elastic relaxation time $\tau_{el}$. At low bias the I-U characteristics possess additional symmetry not present in normal conductors; they remain invariant under simultaneous reversal of current, voltage, and the magnetic field.

Helium-4 gravitational form factors: Exchange currents

We evaluate the leading exchange corrections to the helium-4 gravitational form factors (GFFs) to momenta of the order of the nucleon mass. We use both the K-harmonic method with simple pair nucleon potential, and a Jastrow trial function using the Argonne 𝑣 14 potential, to evaluate the helium-4 GFFs. The exchange current contributions include the pair interaction, plus the seagull and the pion exchange interactions, modulo the recoil corrections. To estimate the off-shellness of the pion nucleon coupling in this momenta range, we discuss the results using either the pseudoscalar (PS) or pseudovector (PV) pion-nucleon couplings. When the PV coupling is used, the pair diagram contribution is higher order in the nonrelativistic expansion. The results for the helium-4 A-GFF are comparable to those given by the impulse approximation, especially for the PS coupling using both the K-harmonic method and variational method. The exchange current contributions with the PS coupling for the charge form factor of helium-4, yield better agreement with the existing data over a broad range of momenta, especially when the Argonne 𝑣 14 potential including the D-wave admixture is used.

Measurement of neutrino-induced neutral-current coherent $π^0$ production in the NOvA near detector

The cross section of neutrino-induced neutral-current coherent $\pi^0$ production on a carbon-dominated target is measured in the NOvA near detector. This measurement uses a narrow-band neutrino beam with the average neutrino energy of 2.7\,GeV, xwhich is of interest to the ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. The measured, flux-averaged cross section is $\sigma = 14.0\pm0.9$\,(stat.)$\pm2.1$\,(syst.)$\times 10^{-40}$ $\text{cm}^2/$nucleus, consistent with model prediction. This result is the most precise measurement of neutral-current coherent $\pi^0$ production in the few-GeV neutrino energy region.

Probing nuclear effects with neutrino-induced charged-current neutral pion production

We study neutrino-induced charged-current (CC) $\pi^0$ production on carbon nuclei using events with fully imaged final-state proton-$\pi^0$ systems. Novel use of final-state correlations based on transverse kinematic imbalance enable the first measurements of the struck nucleon's Fermi motion, of the intranuclear momentum transfer (IMT) dynamics, and of the final-state hadronic momentum configuration in neutrino pion production. Event distributions are presented for i) the momenta of neutrino-struck neutrons below the Fermi surface, ii) the direction of missing transverse momentum characterizing the strength of IMT, and iii) proton-pion momentum imbalance with respect to the lepton scattering plane. The observed Fermi motion and IMT strength are compared to the previous MINERvA measurement of neutrino CC quasielastic-like production. The measured shapes and absolute rates of these distributions, as well as the cross-section asymmetries show tensions with predictions from current neutrino generator models.

Solar neutrino detection in liquid xenon detectors via charged-current scattering to excited states

We investigate the prospects for real-time detection of solar neutrinos via the charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering process in liquid xenon time projection chambers. We use a nuclear shell model, benchmarked with experimental data, to calculate the cross sections for populating specific excited states of the cesium nuclei produced by neutrino capture on Xe 131 and Xe 136 . The shell model is further used to compute the decay schemes of the low-lying 1 + excited states of Cs 136 , for which there is sparse experimental data. We explore the possibility of tagging the characteristic deexcitation γ rays/conversion electrons using two techniques: spatial separation of their energy deposits using event topology and their time separation using delayed coincidence. The efficiencies in each case are evaluated within a range of realistic detector parameters. We find that the topological signatures are likely to be dominated by radon backgrounds, but that a delayed-coincidence signature from long-lived states predicted in Cs 136 may enable background-free detection of CNO neutrino interactions in next-generation experiments with smaller uncertainty than current measurements. We also estimate the sensitivity as a function of exposure for detecting the solar-temperature-induced line shift in Be 7 neutrino emission, which may provide a new test of solar models.

Inclusive cross section measurements in final states with and without protons for charged-current ν μ -Ar scattering in MicroBooNE

A detailed understanding of inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To that end, we report a comprehensive set of differential cross section measurements for this channel that simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the channel into final states with and without protons. Measurements of the proton kinematics and proton multiplicity of the final state are also presented. For these measurements, we utilize data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4 × 10 20 protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam at a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. We present in detail the cross section extraction procedure, including the unfolding, and model validation that uses data to model comparisons and the conditional constraint formalism to detect mismodeling that may introduce biases to extracted cross sections that are larger than their uncertainties. The validation exposes insufficiencies in the overall model, motivating the inclusion of an additional data-driven reweighting systematic to ensure the accuracy of the unfolding. The extracted results are compared to a number of event generators and their performance is discussed with a focus on the regions of phase space that indicate the greatest need for modeling improvements. Measurement of 𝑑 2⁢ 𝜎/𝑑⁢|$\vec{q}$|⁢𝑑⁢𝐸 avail in charged current 𝜈 𝜇 -nucleus interactions at ⟨𝐸 𝜈 ⟩=1.86 GeV using the NOvA Near Detector

Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current 𝜈 𝜇 -nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV/𝑐 in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean 𝜈 𝜇 energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 𝜈 𝜇 charged-current (CC) interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) reactions is identified by the cross section excess relative to predictions for 𝜈 𝜇 -nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2-hole processes are rated by 𝜒 2 comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured 𝜈 𝜇 CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Shortfalls are observed in neutrino generator predictions obtained using the theory-based València and SuSAv2 2p2h models.

Three-dimensional feedback processes in current-driven metal

Using three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we study how a pit on a metal surface evolves when driven by intense electrical current density j. Redistribution of j around the pit initiates a feedback loop: j both reacts to and alters the electrical conductivity σ, through Joule heating and hydrodynamic expansion, so that j and σ are constantly in flux. Thus, the pit transforms into larger striation and filament structures predicted by the electrothermal instability theory. Both structures are important in applications of current-driven metal: Here, the striation constitutes a density perturbation that can seed the magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability, while the filament provides a more rapid path to plasma formation, through 3D j redistribution. Simulations predict distinctive self-emission patterns, thus allowing for experimental observation and comparison.

Index Theorems, Generalized Hall Currents, and Topology for Gapless Defect Fermions

In this work, we show how the index of the fermion operator from the Euclidean action can be used to uncover the existence of gapless modes living on defects (such as edges and vortices) in topological insulators and superconductors. The 1-loop Feynman diagram that computes the index reveals an analog of the quantum Hall current flowing on and off the defect—even in systems without conserved currents or chiral anomalies—and makes explicit the interplay between topology in momentum and coordinate space. We provide several explicit examples.
