This special edition of Journal of Information Warfare explores foundations of key technologies that we believe will drive a revolution in control of critical infrastructure systems. It is our assertion that in the near future increasing autonomy will be necessary for subsystems and their components to react fast enough (and proactively position themselves) against the threats they face. The goal is to make the human decision-making more impactful and at a time scale appropriate for human cognition. The papers in this special edition address various facets of this autonomic loop with human supervisory control.
Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) is a powerful characterization tool that is commonly employed to study grain size, grain morphology, crystallographic texture and other important microstructure parameters. However, its relatively low atomic number and propensity to corrode can make it difficult to get high quality EBSD patterns from magnesium specimens. This work will cover some common issues encountered during sample prep and suggestions for avoiding them. Microscope and EBSD detector settings will also be covered, as well as methods for optimizing instrument time. Lastly, comments will be made on how to “clean” and present EBSD data.

Methods for determining desired doping conditions for a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (s-SWCNT) are provided. One exemplary method includes doping each of a plurality of s-SWCNT networks under a respective set of doping conditions; determining a thermoelectric (TE) power factor as a function of a fractional bleach of an absorption spectrum for the plurality of s-SWCNT networks doped under the respective sets of doping conditions; and using the function to identify one of the TE power factors within a range of the fractional bleach of the absorption spectrum. The identified TE power factor corresponds to the desired doping conditions.
Disclosed herein is an isolable colloidal particle comprising a nanoparticle and an inorganic capping agent bound to the surface of the nanoparticle, a method for making the same in a biphasic solvent mixture, and the formation of structures and solids from the isolable colloidal particle. The process can yield photovoltaic cells, piezoelectric crystals, thermoelectric layers, optoelectronic layers, light emitting diodes, ferroelectric layers, thin film transistors, floating gate memory devices, phase change layers, and sensor devices.
