Estimation of payload loads using rigid body interface accelerations

In the design/analysis process of a payload structural system, the accelerations at the payload/launch vehicle interface obtained from a system analysis using a rigid payload are often used as the input forcing function to the elastic payload to obtain structural design loads. Such an analysis is at best an approximation since the elastic coupling effects are neglected. This paper develops a method wherein the launch vehicle/rigid payload interface accelerations are modified to account for the payload elasticity. The advantage of the proposed method, which is exact to the extent that the physical system can be described by a truncated set of generalized coordinates, is that the complete design/analysis process can be performed within the organization responsible for the payload design. The method requires the updating of the system normal modes to account for payload changes, but does not require a complete transient solution using the composite system model. An application to a real complex structure, the Viking Spacecraft System, is given.

Development of LaRC 160/NR150B2 polyimide graphite hybrid composites

A method for co-curing NR150B2 and LaRC 160 prepregs into hybrid composites was developed. The processing characteristics and the properties of the hybrid composites were compared with those of laminates fabricated from the individual component prepregs. Resin forms were selected and optimized and a new NR150 formulation was investigated. The new formulation greatly facilitated the processing and the performance of this system. Quality control techniques were evaluated and developed, high quality laminates were fabricated from both individual resin systems, and hybrid laminates were successfully co-cured. Optimum hybrid forms were investigated and several novel approaches were explored. An optimum hybrid system was developed that utilizes a LaRC curing schedule but shows no degradation of mechanical properties after aging 500 hr in air at 260 C.

The Landsat-D responsiveness to user community needs

Initial examinations of the Landsat-4 Multispectral Scanner and Thematic Mapper (IM) imagery indicate that these systems and the ground-based data processing systems are performing well. A combination of the spatial resolution of the multispectral scanner with the four band (0.5-0.6, 0.6-0.7, 0.7-0.8, and 0.8-1.1 microns) multispectral capability provides a useful observation technique for identifying crop type, phenological state of development, and a real condition assessment. Landsat multispectral scanner imagery has become more important in the search for new deposits of oil and mineral resources, and geological applications indicate that image analysis complements geological mapping techniques. Advantages of the TM include more precise measurements of the increased reflectance of vegetation in the green and near infrared. In addition, TM has improvement vegetation species differentiation, due to measurements made in new spectral bands. Preliminary TM data analysis reveals that systems have performed to optimum expectations.

The cometary atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind

The present state of knowledge of cometary atmospheres and their interaction with the solar winds is assessed. Current models of the magnetospheres and ionospheres of comets are based on either an atmospheric chemistry approach, minimizing the effects of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, while the other method takes the exact opposite viewpoint and roles and significance are reversed. A major difficulty in completing the models is a lack of data on the chemical composition of the cometary nucleus, although UV observations have revealed the H, C, O, and S elemental abundance ratios. It is suggested that further studies of collisional ionization by energetic electrons be performed to characterize processes in the cometary atmosphere. Hydronium may be the dominat molecule in the inner coma, if the assumption that the ionosphere is a magnetic field-free cavity separated from the solar wind by an unyielding tangential discontinuity surface is accurate. Particular observations and theoretical attention are recommended for the solar wind interaction in the intermediate range, i.e., 2.5-5 AU, when the cometary atmosphere develops.

Phase locked loop synchronization for direct detection optical PPM communication systems

Receiver timing synchronization of an optical pulse position modulation (PPM) communication system can be achieved using a phase locked loop (PLL) if the photodetector output is properly processed. The synchronization performance is shown to improve with increasing signal power and decreasing loop bandwidth. Bit error rate (BER) of the PLL synchronized PPM system is analyzed and compared to that for the perfectly synchronized system. It is shown that the increase in signal power needed to compensate for the imperfect synchronization is small (less than 0.1 dB) for loop bandwidths less than 0.1% of the slot frequency.

Development and evaluation of a Fault-Tolerant Multiprocessor (FTMP) computer. Volume 2: FTMP software

The software developed for the Fault-Tolerant Multiprocessor (FTMP) is described. The FTMP executive is a timer-interrupt driven dispatcher that schedules iterative tasks which run at 3.125, 12.5, and 25 Hz. Major tasks which run under the executive include system configuration control, flight control, and display. The flight control task includes autopilot and autoland functions for a jet transport aircraft. System Displays include status displays of all hardware elements (processors, memories, I/O ports, buses), failure log displays showing transient and hard faults, and an autopilot display. All software is in a higher order language (AED, an ALGOL derivative). The executive is a fully distributed general purpose executive which automatically balances the load among available processor triads. Provisions for graceful performance degradation under processing overload are an integral part of the scheduling algorithms.

Generation of spiral bevel gears with conjugate tooth surfaces and tooth contact analysis

A new method for generation of spiral bevel gears is proposed. The main features of this method are as follows: (1) the gear tooth surfaces are conjugated and can transform rotation with zero transmission errors; (2) the tooth bearing contact is localized; (3) the center of the instantaneous contact ellipse moves in a plane that has a fixed orientation; (4) the contact normal performs in the process of meshing a parallel motion; (5) the motion of the contact ellipse provides improved conditions of lubrication; and (6) the gears can be manufactured by use of Gleason's equipment.

The use of database management systems and artificial intelligence in automating the planning of optical navigation pictures

The use of database management systems (DBMS) and AI to minimize human involvement in the planning of optical navigation pictures for interplanetary space probes is discussed, with application to the Galileo mission. Parameters characterizing the desirability of candidate pictures, and the program generating them, are described. How these parameters automatically build picture records in a database, and the definition of the database structure, are then discussed. The various rules, priorities, and constraints used in selecting pictures are also described. An example is provided of an expert system, written in Prolog, for automatically performing the selection process.

Implementing nested conditional statements in SIMD machines

Single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) computers consist of a very large number of processors executing a common sequence of instructions. Maintaining the full speedup potential of such machines is most sensitive to conditional execution in their programs, regions of code where some processing elements (PEs) perform no useful work. Techniques are presented for efficiently implementing nested conditional statements, specifically if and case statements, in SIMD machines, while adding minimal specialized hardware.

Region based route planning - Multi-abstraction route planning based on intermediate level vision processing

Intermediate and high level processing operations are performed on vision data for the organization of images into more meaningful, higher-level topological representations by means of a region-based route planner (RBRP). The RBRP operates in terrain scenarios where some or most of the terrain is occluded, proceeding without a priori maps on the basis of two-dimensional representations and gradient-and-roughness information. Route planning is accomplished by three successive abstractions and yields a detailed point-by-point path by searching only within the boundaries of relatively small regions.
