The valve and the pressure gauge of a gas ion laser were electrically insulated from the laser discharge path by connecting them in series with the cathode of the laser. The laser cathode can be grounded and preferably is a cold cathode although a hot cathode may be used instead. The cold cathode was provided with a central aperture to which was connected both the pressure gauge and the gas pressure reservoir through the valve. This will effectively prevent electric discharges from passing either to the pressure gauge or the valve which would otherwise destroy the pressure gauge.
An angle of attack of 0 deg was investigated in the Langley 16 foot transonic tunnel at free-stream Mach numbers from 0.40 to 0.95 to study the phenomenon of separated flow on a series of circular-arc afterbodies. Both high-pressure air and solid circular cylinders with the cylinder diameter equal to the nozzle-exit diameter were used to simulate jet exhausts. The results indicate that boundary-layer separation is most extensive on steep boattails at high Mach numbers. The jet total-pressure ratio changes (jet total pressure to free-stream static pressure) affected the extent of separation very little; however, comparison of the separation data obtained by using the two jet-simulation techniques indicate that entrainment associated with the presence of a jet had a significant effect on the extent of separation. The solid-simulator separation data were also used to evaluate the predictions of eight separation criteria.
Signal information is processed with the help of algorithms, and then on the basis of such processing, a part of the information is subjected to further processing with the help of more precise algorithms. Such a system of algorithms is studied, a comparative evaluation of a series of lower level algorithms is given, and the corresponding algorithms of higher level are characterized.
Two separate algorithms are derived for testing filter sensitivity to systematic data errors. One algorithm provides the absolute minimum Euclidean norm data error for a given estimate component error. The second algorithm can be used to find the minimum norm data error which can be generated by restricted degree Legendre polynomials. A specific very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) baseline estimation is analyzed with the algorithm. It is found that the local vertical is the most sensitive component to error in the data space. The efficiency of a data error sequence linear in elevation angle is within 7% that of the absolute worst case sequence. Elevation angle dependent errors are explored and the special case of a mismodeled troposphere is treated.

Bypass circuit eliminates unwanted leakage in output RF signal. Correction circuit was developed for phase-shift-keyed transmitters. Principle can be adapted to correct leakage in other types of RF circuitry as well.
A method is described for the quick determination of the susceptibilities of various unidentified bacteria contained in an aqueous physiological fluid sample, particularly urine, to one or more antibiotics. A bacterial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) assay is carried out after the elimination of non-bacterial ATP to determine whether an infection exists. If an infection does exist, a portion of the sample is further processed, including subjecting parts of the portion to one or more antibiotics. Growth of the bacteria in the parts are determined, again by an ATP assay, to determine whether the unidentified bacteria in the sample are susceptible to the antibiotic or antibiotics under test.
Fluid instability analysis developed for the growth or decay of large, longitudinal roller vortex perturbations imposed at the base of fluids of exponentially stratified viscosities is presented. The origin of longitudinal grooving and fluting in a region of converging flow in Tiu Vallis, Mars, is analyzed, and the propensity of fluids, such as water, mudflow/debris flow, and lava, to develop longitudinal roll patterns as part of their flow field is tested. It is found that the grooving pattern in Tiu Vallis was probably formed by vortex motion in a mudflow or debris-laden slurry, but exact representation of sediment/debris concentration or sediment transport machanism is not yet possible. It is concluded that longitudinal vortex motion modelled in this analysis can develop in water, lava, or ice, but that the specific flow characteristics of these models which include the vortex motion are unreasonable for flow in Tiu Vallis.
The aluminum skin of the space shuttle is covered by a thermal protection system (TPS) consisting of a low density ceramic tile bonded to a matted-felt material called strain insulation pad (SIP). The structural characteristics of the TPS were studied experimentally under selected extreme load conditions. Three basic types of loads were imposed: tension, eccentrically applied tension, and combined in-plane force and transverse pressure. For some tests, transverse pressure was applied rapidly to simulate a transient shock wave passing over the tile. The failure mode for all specimens involved separation of the tile from the SIP at the silicone rubber bond interface. An eccentrically applied tension load caused the tile to separate from the SIP at loads lower than experienced at failure for pure tension loading. Moderate in-plane as well as shock loading did not cause a measurable reduction in the TPS ultimate failure strength. A strong coupling, however, was exhibited between in-plane and transverse loads and displacements.
The design of a 1.2 by 2.4 m curved glass superstrate and support clip assembly is presented, along with the results of finite element computer analysis and a glass industry survey conducted to assess the technical and economic feasibility of the concept. Installed costs for four curved glass module array configurations are estimated and compared with cost previously reported for comparable flat glass module configurations. Electrical properties of candidate module encapsulation systems are evaluated along with present industry practice for the design and testing of electrical insulation systems. Electric design requirements for module encapsulation systems are also discussed.
The condensation of Hg atoms in an ozone-doped argon matrix gas with irradiation from a medium-pressure mercury arc lamp at 10 K resulted in the formation of several trapped HgO(x) species. Tentative identification of HgO has been made from absorption bands appearing in the visible and IR regions of the spectrum based on (O-16)2 and (O-18)2 isotope studies. The following spectroscopic constants were obtained: nu(00) = 14634 cm, nu(1) = 548 cm, and nu(11) = 676 cm. Some qualitative evidence was obtained for the existence of HgO2.
The procedure solves the Navier-Stokes equations by the consistently split linearized block implicit method of Briley and McDonald in a body fitted coordinate system. The procedure is described and results are presented for flow about an airfoil whose incidence changes from 6 degrees to 19 degrees at a Reynolds number of one million and Mach number of 0.2. In addition, the unsteady flow about an airfoil held at a constant 19 degree incidence is examined and compared to data.
A recent result shows that, for a certain class of systems, the interdependency among the elements of such a system together with the elements constitutes a mathematical structure a partially ordered set. It is called a loop free logic model of the system. On the basis of an intrinsic property of the mathematical structure, a characterization of system component failure in terms of maximal subsets of bad test signals of the system was obtained. Also, as a consequence, information concerning the total number of failure components in the system was deduced. Detailed examples are given to show how to restructure real systems containing loops into loop free models for which the result is applicable.
An investigation of the oxidation of NO to NO2 by trapping the products of the gas-phase reactions with excess oxygen and ozone identified the transient species by their infrared spectra. The primary products of the NO + NO2 reactions were NO2, N2O3(A), N2O3(B), N2O4, and peroxy nitrate (OONO). The primary products of the NO + O3 reactions were NO2 and peroxy NO3 with the higher nitric oxides in low concentrations compared with the NO + O2 reactions. Isotopic oxygen and ozone were used to identify the infrared absorption frequency of the peroxy nitrate.
It is noted that in a low-noise environment, a simple inversion circuit can be used for quick-look decoding of a convolutional code. An improvement in the bit error performance of the raw inversion circuit is effected by a simple pattern-recognition technique operating on the syndrome stream, which is also used to acquire node sync.
Quartz vacuum ampoule confines corrosive sample wafer between two quartz plugs inserted in quartz tube. One quartz plug is window for measuring sample thermodynamic properties while laser pulse entering other quartz plug heats sample to molten state. Confinement of sample in vacuum prevents contamination of measurement system by hot corrosive vapors and any interference by preferential evaporation of melt.
