Highly Efficient Urea Oxidation via Nesting Nano-Nickel Oxide in Eggshell Membrane-Derived Carbon

Here, we reported a strategy of using an eggshell membrane to produce hierarchically porous carbon as a low-cost substrate for synthesizing a nano-nickel oxide catalyst (C@NiO), which can effectively turn biowaste—urea—into energy through an electrochemical approach. Here, the interwoven carbon networks within NiO led to highly efficient urea oxidation due to the strong synergistic effect. The as-prepared electrode only needed 1.36 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode to realize a high efficiency of 10 mA cm –2 in 1.0 M KOH with 0.33 M urea and delivered an even higher current density of 25 mA cm –2 at 1.46 V, which is smaller than that of the porous carbon and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Benefiting from theoretical calculations, Ni(III) active species and the porous carbon further enabled the electrocatalyst to effectively inhibit the “CO 2 poisoning” of electrocatalysts, as well as ensuring its superior performance for urea oxidation.

Electrolyte Engineering for Efficient Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia on a Titanium Electrode

Nitrates from agricultural runoff and industrial waste streams are a notorious waste product and hazardous pollutant. Traditional electrochemical water remediation approaches aim to solve this problem by converting nitrates to environmentally benign N 2 while minimizing the production of environmentally hazardous side products such as ammonia and nitrous oxide in a process known as “denitrification”. We modify this concept and outline an opportunity to optimize the conversion of nitrates into ammonia, which is also a key commodity product used as a fertilizer, potential fuel, and chemical precursor. The electrochemical conversion of nitrates to ammonia recycles the fixed nitrogen and offers an appealing and supplementary alternative to the energy- and resource-intensive Haber-Bosch process. In this study, we investigated the effect of varying electrochemical conditions (pH, nitrate concentration, and applied potential) on the selective reduction of nitrate to ammonia at a titanium cathode. We observed that high concentrations of both protons and nitrate ions are needed to achieve high selectivity, reaching a peak of 82% Faradaic efficiency to ammonia at an applied potential of -1 V versus RHE and a partial current density to NH 3 of -22 mA/cm 2 , using 0.4 M [NO 3 – ] at pH ~0.77. The Ti electrode, as a poor hydrogen evolution catalyst with notable corrosion resistance, provides a large window of operating conditions to achieve high selectivity in the reduction of nitrate anions. Stability of the system was evaluated, and we found a high Faradaic efficiency throughout the course of an 8 h experiment. After electrochemical testing, titanium hydride was observed at the cathode surface. We also show a preliminary technoeconomic study, indicating that it may be feasible to employ an electrochemical strategy for the production of ammonium nitrate.

Slow Auger Recombination of Trapped Excitons Enables Efficient Multiple Electron Transfer in CdS–Pt Nanorod Heterostructures

We report solar-to-fuel conversion reaction often requires multiple proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes powered by the energetic electrons and/or holes generated by the absorption of multiple photons. The effective coupling of multiple electron transfer from the light absorber with the multiple PCET reactions at the catalytic center is one of the key challenges in efficient and selective conversion of solar energy to chemical fuels. In this paper, we examine the dynamics of multiple electron transfer in quantum confined CdS nanorods with a Pt tip, in which the CdS rod functions as the light absorber and the Pt tip the catalytic center. By excitation-fluence-dependent transient absorption spectroscopic measurements, we show that the multiexciton Auger recombination rate in CdS rods follows a carrier-collision model, k n A = n 2 (n – 1)/4k 2 A , with a biexciton lifetime (1/k 2 A ) of 2.0 ± 0.2 ns. In CdS–Pt nanorods, electron transfer kinetics from the CdS conduction band edge to the Pt show negligible dependence on the excitation fluence, occurring with a half-life time of 5.6 ± 0.6 ps. The efficiency of multiple exciton dissociation by multiple electron transfer to Pt decreases from 100% in biexciton states to ~41% at 22 exciton state due to the competition with Auger recombination. The half-lifetime of the n-charge separated state recombination (with n electrons in the Pt and n holes in the CdS) decreases from 10 μs in the single charge separated state to 42 ns in nine charge separated states. Our findings suggest the possibility of driving multielectron photocatalytic reactions under intense illumination and controlling product selectivity through multielectron transfer.

Intermetallic Ni 3 Ga 1 Catalyst for Efficient Ammonia Reforming of Light Alkane

Ammonia reforming of light alkane is conventionally employed for HCN production where coproduct H 2 is burned for heating owing to the high reaction temperature (1200 °C) of such a highly endothermic process. Here, in this study, we show that a Ni 3 Ga 1 intermetallic compound (IMC) catalyst is highly efficient for such a reaction, realizing efficient conversion of C1–C3 alkanes at 575–750 °C. This makes it feasible for on-purpose CO x -free H 2 production assuming that ammonia, as an H 2 carrier, is ubiquitously available from renewable energy. At 650 °C and an alkane/ammonia ratio of 1/2, ethane and propane conversion of ~20% and methane conversion of 13% were obtained (with nearly 100% HCN selectivity for methane and ethane) over the unsupported Ni 3 Ga 1 IMC, which also shows high stability due to the absence of coke deposition. This breakthrough is achieved by employing a stoichiometric Ni 3 Ga 1 mixed oxalate solid solution as the precursor for the Ni 3 Ga 1 IMC.

Efficient Capture and Release of the Rare-Earth Element Neodymium in Aqueous Solution by Recyclable Covalent Organic Frameworks

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are present in a broad range of critical materials. The development of solid adsorbents for REE capture could enable the cost-effective recycling of REE-containing magnets and electronics. In this context, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising candidates for REE adsorption due to their exceptionally high surface area. Despite having attractive physical properties, COFs are heavily underutilized for REE capture applications due to their limited lifecycle in aqueous acidic environments, as well as synthetic challenges associated with the incorporation of ligands suitable for REE capture. Here, in this work, we show how the Ugi multicomponent reaction can be leveraged to postsynthetically modify imine-based COFs for the introduction of a diglycolic acid (DGA) moiety, an efficient scaffold for REE capture. The adsorption capacity of the DGA-functionalized COF was found to be more than 40 times higher than that of the pristine imine COF precursor and more than four times higher than that of the next-best reported DGA-functionalized solid support. This rationally designed COF has appealing characteristics of high adsorption capacity, fast and efficient capture and release of the REE ions, and reliable recyclability, making it one of the most promising adsorbents for solid–liquid REE ion extractions reported to date.

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

Lattice-Nitrogen-Mediated Chemistry Suppresses Hydrogen Evolution for Record Faradaic Efficiency in Ammonia Synthesis

Ammonia (NH 3 ) production using air, water, and electricity offers a transformative route to carbon-free chemical synthesis, addressing global sustainability challenges. However, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous systems significantly hinders NH 3 selectivity, limiting Faradaic efficiency (FE) to below ~15%. Here, we report an FE of approximately 48%, the highest recorded for aqueous NH 3 synthesis, using two-dimensional (2D) nitride catalysts. These catalysts enable lattice nitrogen protonation through the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism, effectively suppressing HER. Using operando spectroelectrochemistry, we identified active sites and tracked nitrogen vacancy cycles, providing unprecedented insights into the reaction pathways. Our findings, supported by advanced computational techniques and complementary spectroscopic analyses, highlight the stability and efficiency of the MvK cycle, setting a new benchmark for sustainable NH 3 production.

Autonomous Synthesis and Inverse Design of Electrochromic Polymers with High Efficiency and Accuracy

Here, the design and synthesis of functional polymers, aimed at targeted properties through specific structures, have long been challenged by their complex and often nonlinear structure–property relationships. Key processes, including knowledge accumulation for predictive design and experimental refinement and validation, are traditionally labor-insensitive and time-consuming, making it difficult to balance accuracy and efficiency. Here, we introduce an accelerated, autonomous system for the on-demand synthesis of electronic polymers that achieves the desired electrochromic functionality with high accuracy and efficiency. Our approach leverages large language model-assisted data mining, a physics-informed copolymer machine learning model, and an AI-driven autonomous robotic workflow in the Polybot lab. Within 72 h, Polybot autonomously synthesized electrochromic polymers (ECPs) with targeted, previously-unreported color values, including green polymers with specific absorption profiles, precisely fine-tuning copolymer structures with a 5% step size in comonomer composition within a three-monomer system. A publicly accessible ECP informatics database has also been created to foster knowledge exchange.

In Situ Formed Pt–Ga Hetero Duo-Atomic Catalyst for Efficient Hydrogen Storage in N-Heterocycles

Efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are essential for advancing hydrogen storage and transportation. Conventional nanoparticle catalysts suffer from low metal utilization, while single-atom catalysts (SAC) are limited by isolated active sites. Here, in this work, we present a hetero duo-atomic catalyst, Pt 1 –Ga 1 /CeO 2 DAC, which exhibits exceptional activity, selectivity, stability, and recyclability for N-heterocycle hydrogen storage. Ga plays a critical role in C–H bond activation, acting as a mediator in catalytic bond-breaking and formation. Compared with Pt 1 /CeO 2 SAC, Pt 1 –Ga 1 /CeO 2 DAC enhances metal utilization while overcoming SAC limitations for large substrates. This work establishes a promising strategy for designing highly efficient catalysts for LOHC applications.

In Situ Imaging Reveals Efficient Charge Separation in Monolayer MoS 2 –WS 2 Type-II Heterojunctions

Covalently bonded in-plane two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterojunctions with atomically sharp interfaces hold great promise for photocatalytic applications in solar energy conversion and environmental remediation; however, their spatially resolved charge distribution and transport, particularly under operando conditions, remain poorly understood. Here, we employ photoscanning electrochemical microscopy (photo-SECM) to directly visualize photoinduced charge separation in monolayer MoS 2 –WS 2 in-plane heterojunctions. Spatial separation of photogenerated carriers is observed, with electrons accumulating in MoS 2 and holes in WS 2 , leading to strongly asymmetric interfacial kinetics: Fc + reduction proceeds rapidly on MoS 2 (0.6 cm s –1 ), whereas Fc oxidation on WS 2 is significantly slower (0.008 cm s –1 ). High-resolution surface photovoltage microscopy (SPVM) enables a quantitative comparison of charge-separation capacity across architectures. The in-plane MoS 2 –WS 2 heterojunction shows the largest photovoltage contrast (−35 mV in MoS 2 , 20 mV in WS 2 ), exceeding the vertical heterojunction (−18 mV in MoS 2 , 11 mV in WS 2 ) and the individual monolayers (−12 mV for MoS 2 , – 1 mV for WS 2 ), establishing the following trend: in-plane > vertical > monolayers. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) indicates that this directional charge separation is driven by intrinsic type-II band alignment, while photoluminescence (PL) imaging shows that the interface acts as a recombination center that limits efficient carrier extraction. These results provide direct experimental evidence of type-II-driven charge separation in in-plane heterojunctions and offer critical insights for interface design in high-efficiency photocatalytic and optoelectronic systems.

Impacts of Mixed-Wettability on Brine Drainage and Supercritical CO 2 Storage Efficiency in a 2.5-D Heterogeneous Micromodel

Geological carbon storage (GCS) involves unstable drainage processes, the formation of patterns in a morphologically unstable interface between two fluids in a porous medium during drainage. The unstable drainage processes affect CO 2 storage efficiency and plume distribution and can be greatly complicated by the mixed-wet nature of rock surfaces common in hydrocarbon reservoirs where supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) is used in enhanced oil recovery. Here, we performed scCO 2 injection (brine drainage) experiments at 8.5 MPa and 45°C in heterogeneous micromodels, two mixed-wet with varying water- and intermediate-wet patches, and one water-wet. The flow regime changes from capillary fingering through crossover to viscous fingering in the micromodels of the same pore geometry but different wetting surfaces at displacement rates with logCa (capillary number) increasing from –8.1 to –4.4. While the mixed-wet micromodel with uniformly distributed intermediate-wet patches yields ~0.15 scCO 2 saturation increase at both capillary fingering and crossover flow regimes (–8.1 ≤ logCa ≤ –6.1), the one heterogeneous wetting to scCO 2 results in ~0.09 saturation increase only at the crossover flow regime (–7.1 ≤ logCa ≤ –6.1). The interconnected flow paths in the former are quantified and compared to the channelized scCO 2 flow through intermediate-wet patches in the latter by topological analysis. At logCa > –6.1 (near well), the effects of wettability and pore geometry are suppressed by strong viscous force. Both scCO 2 saturation and distribution suggest the importance of wettability on CO 2 storage efficiency and plume shape in reservoirs and capillary leakage through caprock at GCS conditions.

Efficient Optimization of Energy Recovery From Geothermal Reservoirs With Recurrent Neural Network Predictive Models

Improving the long-term energy production performance of geothermal reservoirs can be accomplished by optimizing field development and management plans. Reliable prediction models, however, are needed to evaluate and optimize the performance of the underlying reservoirs under various operation and development strategies. In traditional frameworks, physics-based simulation models are used to predict the energy production performance of geothermal reservoirs. However, detailed simulation models are not trivial to construct, require a reliable description of the reservoir conditions and properties, and entail high computational complexity. Data-driven predictive models can offer an efficient alternative for use in optimization workflows. This paper presents an optimization framework for net power generation in geothermal reservoirs using a variant of the recurrent neural network (RNN) as a data-driven predictive model. The RNN architecture is developed and trained to replace the simulation model for computationally efficient prediction of the objective function and its gradients with respect to the well control variables. The net power generation performance of the field is optimized by automatically adjusting the mass flow rate of production and injection wells over 12 years, using a gradient-based local search algorithm. Two field-scale examples are presented to investigate the performance of the developed data-driven prediction and optimization framework. Furthermore, the prediction and optimization results from the RNN model are evaluated through comparison with the results obtained by using a numerical simulation model of a real geothermal reservoir.

Optoelectronic polymer memristors with dynamic control for power-efficient in-sensor edge computing

Abstract As the demand for edge platforms in artificial intelligence increases, including mobile devices and security applications, the surge in data influx into edge devices often triggers interference and suboptimal decision-making. There is a pressing need for solutions emphasizing low power consumption and cost-effectiveness. In-sensor computing systems employing memristors face challenges in optimizing energy efficiency and streamlining manufacturing due to the necessity for multiple physical processing components. Here, we introduce low-power organic optoelectronic memristors with synergistic optical and mV-level electrical tunable operation for a dynamic “control-on-demand” architecture. Integrating signal sensing, featuring, and processing within the same memristors enables the realization of each in-sensor analogue reservoir computing module, and minimizes circuit integration complexity. The system achieves 97.15% fingerprint recognition accuracy while maintaining a minimal reservoir size and ultra-low energy consumption. Furthermore, we leverage wafer-scale solution techniques and flexible substrates for optimal memristor fabrication. By centralizing core functionalities on the same in-sensor platform, we propose a resilient and adaptable framework for energy-efficient and economical edge computing.

Optimized active layer morphology toward efficient and polymer batch insensitive organic solar cells

Abstract Morphology control in laboratory and industry setting remains as a major challenge for organic solar cells (OSCs) due to the difference in film-drying kinetics between spin coating and the printing process. A two-step sequential deposition method is developed to control the active layer morphology. A conjugated polymer that self-assembles into a well-defined fibril structure is used as the first layer, and then a non-fullerene acceptor is introduced into the fibril mesh as the second layer to form an optimal morphology. A benefit of the combined fibril network morphology and non-fullerene acceptor properties was that a high efficiency of 16.5% (certified as 16.1%) was achieved. The preformed fibril network layer and the sequentially deposited non-fullerene acceptor form a robust morphology that is insensitive to the polymer batches, solving a notorious issue in OSCs. Such progress demonstrates that the utilization of polymer fibril networks in a sequential deposition process is a promising approach towards the fabrication of high-efficiency OSCs.

Gold-in-copper at low *CO coverage enables efficient electromethanation of CO 2

The renewable-electricity-powered CO 2 electroreduction reaction provides a promising means to store intermittent renewable energy in the form of valuable chemicals and dispatchable fuels. Renewable methane produced using CO 2 electroreduction attracts interest due to the established global distribution network; however, present-day efficiencies and activities remain below those required for practical application. Here we exploit the fact that the suppression of *CO dimerization and hydrogen evolution promotes methane selectivity: we reason that the introduction of Au in Cu favors *CO protonation vs. C-C coupling under low *CO coverage and weakens the *H adsorption energy of the surface, leading to a reduction in hydrogen evolution. We construct experimentally a suite of Au-Cu catalysts and control *CO availability by regulating CO 2 concentration and reaction rate. This strategy leads to a 1.6× improvement in the methane:H 2 selectivity ratio compared to the best prior reports operating above 100 mA cm -2 . We as a result achieve a CO 2 -to-methane Faradaic efficiency (FE) of (56 ± 2)% at a production rate of (112 ± 4) mA cm -2 .

E(3)-equivariant graph neural networks for data-efficient and accurate interatomic potentials

Abstract This work presents Neural Equivariant Interatomic Potentials (NequIP), an E(3)-equivariant neural network approach for learning interatomic potentials from ab-initio calculations for molecular dynamics simulations. While most contemporary symmetry-aware models use invariant convolutions and only act on scalars, NequIP employs E(3)-equivariant convolutions for interactions of geometric tensors, resulting in a more information-rich and faithful representation of atomic environments. The method achieves state-of-the-art accuracy on a challenging and diverse set of molecules and materials while exhibiting remarkable data efficiency. NequIP outperforms existing models with up to three orders of magnitude fewer training data, challenging the widely held belief that deep neural networks require massive training sets. The high data efficiency of the method allows for the construction of accurate potentials using high-order quantum chemical level of theory as reference and enables high-fidelity molecular dynamics simulations over long time scales.

Solvent-driven fractional crystallization for atom-efficient separation of metal salts from permanent magnet leachates

Abstract This work reports a dimethyl ether-driven fractional crystallization process for separating rare earth elements and transition metals. The process has been successfully applied in the treatment of rare earth element-bearing permanent magnet leachates as an atom-efficient, reagent-free separation method. Using ~5 bar pressure, the solvent was dissolved into the aqueous system to displace the contained metal salts as solid precipitates. Treatments at distinct temperatures ranging from 20–31 °C enable crystallization of either lanthanide-rich or transition metal-rich products, with single-stage solute recovery of up to 95.9% and a separation factor as high as 704. Separation factors increase with solution purity, suggesting feasibility for eco-friendly solution treatments in series and parallel to purify aqueous material streams. Staged treatments are demonstrated as capable of further improving the separation factor and purity of crystallized products. Upon completion of a crystallization, the solvent can be recovered with high efficiency at ambient pressure. This separation process involves low energy and reagent requirements and does not contribute to waste generation.

Metaplastic and energy-efficient biocompatible graphene artificial synaptic transistors for enhanced accuracy neuromorphic computing

CMOS-based computing systems that employ the von Neumann architecture are relatively limited when it comes to parallel data storage and processing. In contrast, the human brain is a living computational signal processing unit that operates with extreme parallelism and energy efficiency. Although numerous neuromorphic electronic devices have emerged in the last decade, most of them are rigid or contain materials that are toxic to biological systems. In this work, we report on biocompatible bilayer graphene-based artificial synaptic transistors (BLAST) capable of mimicking synaptic behavior. The BLAST devices leverage a dry ion-selective membrane, enabling long-term potentiation, with ~50 aJ/µm 2 switching energy efficiency, at least an order of magnitude lower than previous reports on two-dimensional material-based artificial synapses. The devices show unique metaplasticity, a useful feature for generalizable deep neural networks, and we demonstrate that metaplastic BLASTs outperform ideal linear synapses in classic image classification tasks. With switching energy well below the 1 fJ energy estimated per biological synapse, the proposed devices are powerful candidates for bio-interfaced online learning, bridging the gap between artificial and biological neural networks.
