Insulation Resistance Degradation in Ni-BaTiO3 Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors

Insulation resistance (IR) degradation in Ni-BaTiO3 multilayer ceramic capacitors has been characterized by the measurement of both time to failure and direct-current (DC) leakage current as a function of stress time under highly accelerated life test conditions. The measured leakage current-time dependence data fit well to an exponential form, and a characteristic growth time SD can be determined. A greater value of tau(sub SD) represents a slower IR degradation process. Oxygen vacancy migration and localization at the grain boundary region results in the reduction of the Schottky barrier height and has been found to be the main reason for IR degradation in Ni-BaTiO3 capacitors. The reduction of barrier height as a function of time follows an exponential relation of phi (𝑡)=phi (0)e(exp -2Κt), where the degradation rate constant 𝐾=𝐾o𝑒(𝐸𝑘/𝑘𝑇) is inversely proportional to the mean time to failure (MTTF) and can be determined using an Arrhenius plot. For oxygen vacancy electromigration, a lower barrier height phi(0) will favor a slow IR degradation process, but a lower phi(0) will also promote electronic carrier conduction across the barrier and decrease the insulation resistance. As a result, a moderate barrier height phi(0) (and therefore a moderate IR value) with a longer MTTF (smaller degradation rate constant 𝐾) will result in a minimized IR degradation process and the most improved reliability in Ni-BaTiO3 multilayer ceramic capacitors.

Enhancing Acidic Oxygen Evolution Activity by Controlling Oxidation State of Iridium

Iridium oxides with high oxidation states have been reported to be effective in enhancing the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Herein, we develop ultrasmall IrO x nanoparticles (NPs) over titanium nitride (TiN), which undergoes surface oxidation under oxidative conditions to form oxygen-modified TiN (oxi-TiN), enabling the formation of highly oxidized Ir δ+ (δ > 4). This IrO x /oxi-TiN catalyst delivers higher Ir mass activity than commercial IrO 2 , while comparable stability is maintained. The superior OER activity of IrO x /oxi-TiN is further demonstrated in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), requiring only 1.88 V to reach 3 A cm −2 , achieving the U.S. Department of Energy 2025 target (1.90 V at 3 A cm −2 ). In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) confirms that the superior OER activity of IrO x /oxi-TiN originates from highly oxidized Ir δ+ under OER conditions. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a general correlation between the oxidation state of Ir and OER overpotential. Specifically, the introduction of interfacial oxygen at the Ir/TiN interface increases the oxidation state of deposited Ir δ+ from δ < 4 to δ > 4, decreasing the OER overpotential. This study highlights the critical role of high oxidation states of Ir δ+ in enhancing OER activity, providing guidance for the development of advanced acidic OER catalysts.

Noncovalent Immobilization of Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl Iridium Complexes on Ordered Mesoporous Carbon for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The attachment of molecular catalysts to conductive supports for the preparation of solid-state anodes is important for the development of devices for electrocatalytic water oxidation. The preparation and characterization of three molecular cyclopentadienyl iridium(III) complexes, Cp*Ir(1-pyrenyl(2-pyridyl)ethanolate-κO,κN)Cl (1) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), Cp*Ir(diphenyl(2-pyridyl)methanolate-κO,κN)Cl (2), and [Cp*Ir(4-(1-pyrenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)Cl]Cl (3), as precursors for electrochemical water oxidation catalysts, are reported. These complexes contain aromatic groups that can be attached via noncovalent π-stacking to ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC). The resulting iridium-based OMC materials (Ir-1, Ir-2, and Ir-3) were tested for electrocatalytic water oxidation leading to turnover frequencies (TOFs) of 0.9–1.6 s -1 at an overpotential of 300 mV under acidic conditions. The stability of the materials is demonstrated by electrochemical cycling and X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis before and after catalysis. Theoretical studies on the interactions between the molecular complexes and the OMC support provide insight onto the noncovalent binding and are in agreement with the experimental loadings.
