TRUST Contact Thermal Conductance (TRUST-CTC) Report: FY23

The objective of the Delivery Environments (DE) Testbeds to Reduce Uncertainties in Simulations and Tests (TRUST) work package is to quantify and help increase confidence in specific areas of computational and experimental capabilities that are applicable to current and future delivery environments. More complete quantification of confidence in experimental and computational capabilities and the sufficient increase of confidence in those capabilities is critical to improving weapons engineering design, qualification, and assessment efforts that are critical to the current and future stockpile. Staff development will include cross-discipline training to provide engineers with experience in both numerical simulations and experimental methods. This work will use and provide feedback on analysis tools and experimental results databases for efficient and responsive engineering which are currently under development: engineering common model framework (ECMF), engineering quantification of margins and uncertainties (EQMU), test information management system (TIMS), and [WAVES] Analysis for Verified Engineering Simulation (WAVES).

Non-contact based measurement of thin film coatings using eddy current measurements

When a time varying magnetic field attempts to penetrate a conductive surface, the surface will respond to that time varying field by the generation of circular currents around the flux lines. This effect is described by Faraday’s law of induction. An eddy current based measurement system attempts to discern the power loss incurred by these circulating currents within the conductive surface. The measurement system described here uses an Agilent E 4980A LCR meter to quantify the reaction of the film to the high frequency magnetic field lines which are forced into the film. The measurement metric is the meter’s interpretation of the power dissipation caused by the measured film. The meter is setup to use the Ls/Rs inductor model, and is run at 1 Mhz to bring the losses within the film as high as possible for sensitivity.

Corrosion Testing of Refractory in Contact with Molten Glasses Designed for Waste Vitrification

It is known that the predictive life of the refractory ceramic liner of nuclear waste glass melters is conservative, as demonstrated by performance of these materials such as in the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). The motivation for this task is to maximize the useful life of the melters that will be operated at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP), which will in turn minimize procurement and disposal costs and melter outage times, as well as to identify maximum loadings in the waste glass of those species that corrode melter components. This task was initiated jointly with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) with the objective to develop a methodology and model to enable more accurate prediction of refractory service life under prototypic conditions from laboratory-scale material corrosion tests.

Exploring the process-structure-property relationship of Aerosol Deposition to phosphor coatings for non-contact thermometry

Full-field, multi-measurand diagnostics provide rich validation data necessary to improve the product life cycle time of nuclear safety components. Thermophosphor digital image correlation (TP+DIC) is a method of simultaneously measuring strain and temperature fields using patterned phosphor coatings deposited with aerosol deposition (AD). While TP+DIC produces a functional diagnostic, the coating’s reproducibility and the effect of the patterned features on the inferred temperature remains uncharacterized. This NSR&D project provided the opportunity to study two areas: 1) the tunability and repeatability of aerosol deposition and 2) the robustness of aerosol deposition phosphor on deforming substrates. The first area explores the process-property relationship of parameters elucidating the significance of each on the coating. The second area explores the relationship between the features’ characteristics (namely thickness) and the phosphor emission and inferred temperature. Together, the results will lead to the improved accuracy and functionality of TP+DIC for qualification testing of nuclear safety components.
