Measuring Fracture Times Of Ceramics

Electrical measurements complement or replace fast cinematography. Electronic system measures microsecond time intervals between impacts of projectiles on ceramic tiles and fracture tiles. Used in research on ceramics and ceramic-based composite materials such as armor. Hardness and low density of ceramics enable them to disintegrate projectiles more efficiently than metals. Projectile approaches ceramic tile specimen. Penetrating foil squares of triggering device activate display and recording instruments. As ceramic and resistive film break oscilloscope plots increase in electrical resistance of film.

Calculation of Weibull strength parameters and Batdorf flow-density constants for volume- and surface-flaw-induced fracture in ceramics

The calculation of shape and scale parameters of the two-parameter Weibull distribution is described using the least-squares analysis and maximum likelihood methods for volume- and surface-flaw-induced fracture in ceramics with complete and censored samples. Detailed procedures are given for evaluating 90 percent confidence intervals for maximum likelihood estimates of shape and scale parameters, the unbiased estimates of the shape parameters, and the Weibull mean values and corresponding standard deviations. Furthermore, the necessary steps are described for detecting outliers and for calculating the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and the Anderson-Darling goodness-of-fit statistics and 90 percent confidence bands about the Weibull distribution. It also shows how to calculate the Batdorf flaw-density constants by uing the Weibull distribution statistical parameters. The techniques described were verified with several example problems, from the open literature, and were coded. Analysis of interlaminar fracture in composites under combined loading

Delamination is a predominant failure mode in continuous fiber reinforced laminated composite structures. One type of delamination is the transverse crack tip delamination which originates at the tip of transverse matrix cracks. An analytical model based on the sublaminate approach and fracture mechanics is developed to study the growth of such delaminations. Plane strain conditions are assumed and estimates are provided for the total strain energy release rate as well as the mode 1 and mode 2 contribution. The energy release rate estimates are used in combination with a simple failure law to predict critical delamination growth strains and stresses. These predictions are compared with experimental data on T300/934 Graphite Epoxy (+ or - 25/90 nano seconds) laminates in the range n=.5 to 8. A good agreement is demonstrated for the range of n where the experimental observations indicate transverse crack tip delamination to be the predominant failure mode.

Probalistic Finite Elements (PFEM) structural dynamics and fracture mechanics

The purpose of this work is to develop computationally efficient methodologies for assessing the effects of randomness in loads, material properties, and other aspects of a problem by a finite element analysis. The resulting group of methods is called probabilistic finite elements (PFEM). The overall objective of this work is to develop methodologies whereby the lifetime of a component can be predicted, accounting for the variability in the material and geometry of the component, the loads, and other aspects of the environment; and the range of response expected in a particular scenario can be presented to the analyst in addition to the response itself. Emphasis has been placed on methods which are not statistical in character; that is, they do not involve Monte Carlo simulations. The reason for this choice of direction is that Monte Carlo simulations of complex nonlinear response require a tremendous amount of computation. The focus of efforts so far has been on nonlinear structural dynamics. However, in the continuation of this project, emphasis will be shifted to probabilistic fracture mechanics so that the effect of randomness in crack geometry and material properties can be studied interactively with the effect of random load and environment.

Height-tapered double cantilever beam specimen for study of rate effects on fracture toughness of composites

Loading rate effects on the mode I delamination fracture toughness of AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy are presently studied by means of a height-tapered double-cantilever beam specimen whose height contour is designed to furnish a slightly decreasing compliance with increasing crack length, in order to yield a stable and smooth crack propagation at high loading rates. This specimen geometry also allows much higher crack propagation velocities to be obtained with either uniform or width-tapered double cantilever beam specimens.

Dynamic fracture toughness of ceramic composites

The dynamic fracture toughness vs crack velocity relationships of TiB2 particulate-reinforced SiC-matrix and SiC whisker-reinforced Al2O3-matrix composites were determined at both room temperature and 1200 C with impacted, single-edge notched three-point bend specimens. Rapid crack initiation and propagation were monitored by a laser interferometric-displacement gage system. A FEM model that transmitted the measured outside-impact load to the specimen within the furnace was used to characterize the entire loading system-specimen unit. Small differences were measured between the room temperature and 1200 C dynamic responses.

Numerical fracture simulation of bend specimens using a CTOD criterion

Stable crack growth in 50-mm-thick side-grooved three-point bend specimens of HY-130 steel is modeled numerically. A two-dimensional elastoplastic FEM formulation incorporating a CTOD fracture criterion is developed analytically, and the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental data in graphs. Good general agreement is obtained, except for the crack extension, which was typically overpredicted. The value of the J integral at crack initiation is found to be 83 kJ/sq m.

Effect of bond thickness on fracture and fatigue strength of adhesively bonded composite joints

An experimental investigation of composite to composite bonded joints was undertaken to study the effect of bond thickness on debond growth rate under cyclic loading and critical strain energy release rate under static loading. Double cantilever beam specimens of graphite/epoxy adherends bonded with EC 3445 were tested under mode I loading. A different behavior of fracture and fatigue strength was observed with variation of bondline thickness.

Application of fracture mechanics to predict the strength of filament-wound composite specimens with surface damage

The strength of a thick surface notched filament wound graphite/epoxy tensile specimen was predicted using fracture mechanics analysis. The prediction model depended upon the depth of the surface notch and upon the type of failure. Specimens failed in two stages: first a sublaminate with thickness equal to the depth of the surface cut, and second, for increasing load, a sublaminate with thickness equal to the initial thickness minus the cut depth. Analytical predictions and experimental data were in good agreement.

Interlaminar shear fracture toughness and fatigue thresholds for composite materials

Static and cyclic end notched flexure tests were conducted on a graphite epoxy, a glass epoxy, and graphite thermoplastic to determine their interlaminar shear fracture toughness and fatigue thresholds for delamination in terms of limiting values of the mode II strain energy release rate, G-II, for delamination growth. The influence of precracking and data reduction schemes are discussed. Finite element analysis indicated that the beam theory calculation for G-II with the transverse shear contribution included was reasonably accurate over the entire range of crack lengths. Cyclic loading significantly reduced the critical G-II for delamination. A threshold value of the maximum cyclic G-II below which no delamination occurred after one million cycles was identified for each material. Also, residual static toughness tests were conducted on glass epoxy specimens that had undergone one million cycles without delamination. A linear mixed-mode delamination criteria was used to characterize the static toughness of several composite materials; however, a total G threshold criterion appears to characterize the fatigue delamination durability of composite materials with a wide range of static toughness.

Kinetics of fracture in Fe-3Si steel under mode I loading

This paper deals with experimental studies of fatigue crack propagation (FCP) in Fe-3Si steel. The FCP experiments were performed on single-edge crack specimens. Results show that an extensive damage zone consisting of slip bands surrounds and precedes the propagating crack. The system of the crack and the damage zone constitutes the crack layer (CL). The results demonstrate that fracture propagates by the translation, expansion, and distortion of the part of CL called the active zone. The contours of the damage distribution show that different loading stresses may cause significantly different shapes of damage. Application of the stability criteria is demonstrated. It was shown that the critical energy release rate depends on the history of loading.

Application of fracture mechanics and half-cycle method to the prediction of fatigue life of B-52 aircraft pylon components

Stress intensity levels at various parts of the NASA B-52 carrier aircraft pylon were examined for the case when the pylon store was the space shuttle solid rocket booster drop test vehicle. Eight critical stress points were selected for the pylon fatigue analysis. Using fracture mechanics and the half-cycle theory (directly or indirectly) for the calculations of fatigue-crack growth ,the remaining fatigue life (number of flights left) was estimated for each critical part. It was found that the two rear hooks had relatively short fatigue life and that the front hook had the shortest fatigue life of all the parts analyzed. The rest of the pylon parts were found to be noncritical because of their extremely long fatigue life associated with the low operational stress levels.

Progression of damage and fracture in composites under dynamic loading

A new computational simulation method is presented to evaluate the dynamic aspects of composite structural response and durability that have not been simulated previously. Composite structural behavior under any loading condition, geometry, composite system, laminate configuration, and boundary conditions can now be simulated. Structural degradation, delamination, fracture, and damage propagation are included in the simulation. An angle-plied composite plate structure under normal impact loading is used as an example to demonstrate the versatility of the simulation method.

Deformation and fracture of aluminum-lithium alloys: The effect of dissolved hydrogen

The effects of dissolved hydrogen on the mechanical properties of 2090 and 2219 alloys are studied. The work done during this semi-annual period consists of the hydrogen charging study and some preliminary mechanical tests. Prior to SIMS analysis, several potentiostatic and galvanostatic experiments were performed for various times (going from 10 minutes to several hours) in the cathodic zone, and for the two aqueous solutions: 0.04N of HCl and 0.1N NaOH both combined with a small amount of As2O3. A study of the surface damage was conducted in parallel with the charging experiments. Those tests were performed to choose the best charging conditions without surface damage. Disk rupture tests and tensile tests are part of the study designed to investigate the effect of temperature, surface roughness, strain rate, and environment on the fracture behavior. The importance of the roughness and environment were shown using the disk rupture test as well as the importance of the strain rate under hydrogen environment. The tensile tests, without hydrogen effects, have not shown significant differences between low and room temperature.
