An application of modern control theory to jet propulsion systems

The control of an airbreathing turbojet engine by an onboard digital computer is studied. The approach taken is to model the turbojet engine as a linear, multivariable system whose parameters vary with engine operating environment. From this model adaptive closed-loop or feedback control laws are designed and applied to the acceleration of the turbojet engine.

The structure of robust observers

Conventional observers for linear time-invariant systems are shown to be structurally inadequate from a sensitivity standpoint. It is proved that if a linear dynamic system is to provide observer action despite arbitrary small perturbations in a specified subset of its parameters, it must: (1) be a closed loop system, be driven by the observer error, (2) possess redundancy, the observer must be generating, implicitly or explicitly, at least one linear combination of states that is already contained in the measurements, and (3) contain a perturbation-free model of the portion of the system observable from the external input to the observer. The procedure for design of robust observers possessing the above structural features is established and discussed.

F-8 digital fly-by-wire flight test results viewed from an active controls perspective

The results of the NASA F-8 digital fly-by-wire flight test program are presented, along with the implications for active controls applications. The closed loop performance of the digital control system agreed well with the sampled-data system design predictions. The digital fly-by-wire mechanization also met pilot flying qualities requirements. The advantages of mechanizing the control laws in software became apparent during the flight program and were realized without sacrificing overall system reliability. This required strict software management. The F-8 flight test results are shown to be encouraging in light of the requirements that must be met by control systems for flight-critical active controls applications.

A multiloop approach to modeling motion sensor responses

By using a least squares identification algorithm, a multiloop approach is taken to effectively model the response characteristics of the motion sensors. The inputs to the model include the possible sources of information provided to the human via his motion sensing system. One input models the response of the angular acceleration sensors (second derivative of position) and the second input models the response of the linear sensors (sine of position). The third input is the visual display error provided to the human in the closed loop tracking experiment. Data from a roll axis tracking simulation were analyzed. The major source of pilot lead under the motion mode of operation is discussed for control of plants in which motion information improved performance and in which there was no improvement in performance.

On the dynamics of chain systems

A computer-oriented method for obtaining dynamical equations of motion for chain systems is presented. A chain system is defined as an arbitrarily assembled set of rigid bodies such that adjoining bodies have at least one common point and such that closed loops are not formed. The equations of motion are developed through the use of Lagrange's form of d'Alembert's principle. The method and procedure is illustrated with an elementary study of a tripod space manipulator. The method is designed for application with systems such as human body models, chains and cables, and dynamic finite-segment models.

Imaging on ballistic missions to comet Encke

Imaging for navigation and science has been studied for a 1980 Encke flyby at 0.4 to 0.8 AU from the sun with spinning and three-axis spacecraft. Trajectory errors, maneuvers, encounter geometry, imaging performance, and data transmission were considered. Onboard comet sightings are needed for navigation. Recommended for a three-axis spacecraft are two vidicon cameras and a nucleus sensor for closed-loop pointing control. The cameras are essentially the Mariner 9 and Mariner 10 instruments; the nucleus sensor is an updated version of a sensor flown on Mariners 6 and 7. For a spinning spacecraft, a framing camera using a charge-coupled device and a spin-scan photometer are proposed. The framing camera would be a new design; it would not be despun, but the spin axis should point along the comet-centered velocity vector. The photometer is essentially that flown on Pioneer 10 and 11.-

Papers are presented dealing with latest advances in the design of scintillation counters, semiconductor radiation detectors, gas and position sensitive radiation detectors, and the application of these detectors in biomedicine, satellite instrumentation, and environmental and reactor instrumentation. Some of the topics covered include entopistic scintillators, neutron spectrometry by diamond detector for nuclear radiation, the spherical drift chamber for X-ray imaging applications, CdTe detectors in radioimmunoassay analysis, CAMAC and NIM systems in the space program, a closed loop threshold calibrator for pulse height discriminators, an oriented graphite X-ray diffraction telescope, design of a continuous digital-output environmental radon monitor, and the optimization of nanosecond fission ion chambers for reactor physics. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Instabilities connected with neutral sheets in the solar wind

A preliminary study is presented of two sets of data obtained by HEOS 1 and OGO 5 in the solar wind, which reveal the internal structure of two neutral sheets and their two-dimensional structure. HEOS 1 observations of the effects of the tearing mode instability in one of the sheets are described, including complicated structures connected with the sector boundary, sharp increases and decreases in the magnetic field intensity, and the presence of closed loops. HEOS 1 and OGO 5 observations of large oscillations due to plasma pressure imbalances are discussed, and it is concluded that an interchange instability may have been observed.

Analysis of multiloop, multirate sampled-data systems

Based upon new identities between z-transforms at a basis rate, z-transforms at faster rates, and modified z-transforms, the equivalence between the frequency decomposition method and the switch decomposition method is precisely presented so that results of one method are easily obtained from results of the other. Next, a method is developed for determining the closed loop transfer function of multiloop, multirate sampled-data systems with noninteger ratio sampling rates. Previously, this process involved solving a complex system of equations with rational polynomial coefficients. Herein, this is avoided by introducing a systematic decomposition of matrix operators which naturally arise from the switch decomposition method. The matrix operators are simplified by introducing the shifted transforms of signals sampled at one of the faster rates.

Viking 1975 Orbiter Development Test Model/Lander Dynamic Test Model dynamic environmental testing - An overview

The current work presents an overview of the Viking 1975 environmental testing from an engineering standpoint. An extremely large vibration test fixture had to be designed, analyzed, and integrated into a test setup that employed hydrostatic bearings in a new fashion. A vibration control system was also required that would allow for thirty-six channels of sine-wave peak select control from acceleration, force-of-strain transducers. In addition, some 68 channels of peak limiting shutdown capability were needed for backup and monitoring of other data during the forced vibration test. Pretesting included analyses of the fixture design, overturning moment, control system capabilities, and response of the entire spacecraft/fixture/exciter system to the test environment. Closed-loop control for acoustic testing was a necessity due to the fact that the Viking spacecraft took up a major portion of the volume of the 10,000 cu ft chamber. The spacecraft emerged from testing undamaged.

Development of an advanced spacecraft water and waste materials processing system

An Integrated Waste Management-Water System (WM-WS) which uses radioisotopes for thermal energy is described and results of its trial in a 4-man, 180 day simulated space mission are presented. It collects urine, feces, trash, and wash water in zero gravity, processes the wastes to a common evaporator, distills and catalytically purifies the water, and separates and incinerates the solid residues using little oxygen and no chemical additives or expendable filters. Technical details on all subsystems are given along with performance specifications. Data on recovered water and heat loss obtained in test trials are presented. The closed loop incinerator and other projects underway to increase system efficiency and capacity are discussed.

Magnetic attitude control system for dual-spin satellites

A closed-loop control law is developed for a dual-spin satellite control system which utilizes the interaction of the geomagnetic field with the satellite dipole parallel to the spin axis. The control law consists of the linear combination of the pitch axis component of the rate of change of the geomagnetic field and the product of the roll angle and roll axis component of the geomagnetic field. Application of the method of multiple time scales yields approximate solutions for the feedback gains in terms of the system parameters. Approximate solutions are also obtained for the response of the system to disturbance torques. A comparison of the approximate solutions and numerical solutions obtained by numerical integration of the exact equations of motion is then given.
