The dilemma of future electric power demand

Dim prospects are held out for continued exponential growth rates in the generation and use of electric power worldwide and in many local areas, extrapolating from current trends and common projections. While acknowledging the unique advantages of electric power use, the article points out the 30% level of efficiency in conversion of other forms of energy to electrical energy, with huge volumes of wasted energy plus thermal pollution. Even growth at a fixed rate is found problematical, with future needs exhausting water and land resources and fossil fuels in time. Alleviation of the situation by shifting much of the load to still unproven technologies is considered cautiously

Nationwide forestry applications program. Ten-Ecosystem Study (TES) site 7, Weld County, Colorado

The author has identified the following significant results. The best dates for automatic data processing analysis appeared to be in midsummer. The level 2 separation of grassland, water, and other resources was reasonably successful, but the level 3 separation of grassland into cultivated (growing crops) and weeds did not appear feasible. Low simulated inventory proportions of grassland indicated that the restricted inventory signature was not representative of all grassland classes and could not be extended with acceptable accuracy.

Identifying and locating land irrigated by center-pivot irrigation systems using satellite imagery

A methodology for using Landsat imagery for the identification and location of land irrigated by center-pivot irrigation systems is presented. The procedure involves the use of sets of Landsat band 5 imagery taken separated in time by about three weeks during the irrigation season, a zoom transfer scope and mylar base maps to record the locations of center pivots. Further computer processing of the data has been used to obtain plots of center-pivot irrigation systems and tables indicating the distribution and growth of systems by county for the state of Nebraska, and has been found to be in 95% agreement with current high-altitude IR photography. The information obtainable can be used for models of ground-water aquifers or resource planning.
