Transient ablation of Teflon in intense radiative and convective environments

On the basis of this investigation of the high-temperature behavior of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the transient one-dimensional ablation of PTFE has been developed by taking into account the optical transmittance of both the amorphous zone and the crystalline zone of PTFE layer. Results show that although the exposed surface receded at an apparently steady state, both the internal temperature and the thickness of the gel layer increase continuously due to the internal absorption of radiation.

Evaluation of improved algorithms for nonlinear transient structural heat transfer

The paper presents the evaluation of algorithms having potential for reducing computer time to integrate large systems of equations governing nonlinear transient heat transfer in complex structures. A series of test problems is being developed to test two algorithms. The Shuttle Orbiter frame model having 190 nodes was the subject of an analytical/experimental study. Plans are to perform calculations for the complete wing model having about 4000 nodes as well as a regional (plug) model having about 200 nodes.

Rotor transient analysis

Undamped modes approximate dynamic behavior of rotors and bearings. Application of modal analysis to uncouple equations of motion simplifies stability, steady-state unbalance response, and transient response analysis of system; nonlinear stability is predicted from calculated frequency spectra. Analysis provides designers with complete information without involving large-scale computational costs. Programs are written in FORTRAN IV for use on CDC 6600 computer.

Detection of a fast, intense and unusual gamma ray transient

An unusual transient pulse of approximately 50 keV was detected by the gamma-ray burst sensor network using nine space probes and satellites. Its characteristics are unlike those of the known variety of gamma-ray bursts and therefore suggest that it was formed either by a completely different origin species or in a very different manner. It is identified with the LMC supernova remnant N49.

Dynamic response of a Mach 2.5 axisymmetric inlet and turbojet engine with a poppet-value controlled inlet stability bypass system when subjected to internal and external airflow transients

The throat of a Mach 2.5 inlet that was attached to a turbojet engine was fitted with a poppet-valve-controlled stability bypass system that was designed to provide a large, stable airflow range. Propulsion system response and stability bypass performance were determined for several transient airflow disturbances, both internal and external. Internal airflow disturbances included reductions in overboard bypass airflow, power lever angle, and primary-nozzle area as well as compressor stall. For reference, data are also included for a conventional, fixed-exit bleed system. The poppet valves greatly increased inlet stability and had no adverse effects on propulsion system performance. Limited unstarted-inlet bleed performance data are presented.

Direct integration of transient rotor dynamics

An implicit method was developed for integrating the equations of motion for a lumped mass model of a rotor dynamics system. As an aside, a closed form solution to the short bearing theory was also developed for a damper with arbitrary motion. The major conclusions are that the method is numerically stable and that the computation time is proportional to the number of elements in the rotor dynamics model rather than to the cube of the number. This computer code allowed the simulation of a complex rotor bearing system experiencing nonlinear transient motion and displayed the vast amount of results in an easily understood motion picture format - a 10 minute, 16 millimeter, color, sound motion picture supplement. An example problem with 19 mass elements in the rotor dynamics model took 0.7 second of central processing unit time per time step on an IBM 360-67 computer in a time sharing mode.

A numerical comparison with an exact solution for the transient response of a cylinder immersed in a fluid

The transient response of an elastic cylindrical shell immersed in an acoustic media that is engulfed by a plane wave is determined numerically. The method applies to the USA-STAGS code which utilizes the finite element method for the structural analysis and the doubly asymptotic approximation for the fluid-structure interaction. The calculations are compared to an exact analysis for two separate loading cases: a plane step wave and an exponentially decaying plane wave.

The Goddard program of gamma ray transient astronomy

Gamma ray burst studies are reviewed. The past results, present status and future expectations are outlined regarding endeavors using experiments on balloons, IMP-6 and -7, OGO-3, ISEE-1 and -3, Helios-2, Solar Maximum Mission, the Einstein Observatory, Solar Polar and the Gamma Ray Observatory, and with the interplanetary gamma ray burst networks, to which some of these spacecraft sensors contribute. Additional emphasis is given to the recent discovery of a new type of gamma ray transient, detected on 1979 March 5.

Instructions for the use of the CIVM-Jet 4C finite-strain computer code to calculate the transient structural responses of partial and/or complete arbitrarily-curved rings subjected to fragment impact

The CIVM-JET 4C computer program for the 'finite strain' analysis of 2 d transient structural responses of complete or partial rings and beams subjected to fragment impact stored on tape as a series of individual files. Which subroutines are found in these files are described in detail. All references to the CIVM-JET 4C program are made assuming that the user has a copy of NASA CR-134907 (ASRL TR 154-9) which serves as a user's guide to (1) the CIVM-JET 4B computer code and (2) the CIVM-JET 4C computer code 'with the use of the modified input instructions' attached hereto.

Finite-strain large-deflection elastic-viscoplastic finite-element transient response analysis of structures

A method of analysis for thin structures that incorporates finite strain, elastic-plastic, strain hardening, time dependent material behavior implemented with respect to a fixed configuration and is consistently valid for finite strains and finite rotations is developed. The theory is formulated systematically in a body fixed system of convected coordinates with materially embedded vectors that deform in common with continuum. Tensors are considered as linear vector functions and use is made of the dyadic representation. The kinematics of a deformable continuum is treated in detail, carefully defining precisely all quantities necessary for the analysis. The finite strain theory developed gives much better predictions and agreement with experiment than does the traditional small strain theory, and at practically no additional cost. This represents a very significant advance in the capability for the reliable prediction of nonlinear transient structural responses, including the reliable prediction of strains large enough to produce ductile metal rupture.

Analysis of electrical transients created by lightning

A series of flight tests was conducted using a specially-instrumented NASA Learjet to study the electrical transients created on an aircraft by nearby lightning. The instrumentation included provisions for the time-domain and frequency-domain recording of the electrical signals induced in sensors located both on the exterior and on the interior of the aircraft. The design and calibration of the sensors and associated measuring systems is described together with the results of the flight test measurements. The results indicate that the concept of providing instrumentation to follow the lightning signal from propagation field, to aircraft skin current, to current on interior wiring is basically sound. The results of the measurement indicate that the high frequency signals associated with lightning stroke precursor activity are important in generating electromagnetic noise on the interior of the aircraft. Indeed, the signals produced by the precursors are often of higher amplitude and of longer duration that the pulse produced by the main return stroke.

Calculation of the transient motion of elastic airfoils forced by control surface motion and gusts

The time-domain equations of motion of elastic airfoil sections forced by control surface motions and gusts were developed for the case of incompressible flow. Extensive use was made of special functions related to the inverse transform of Theodorsen's function. Approximations for the special cases of zero stream velocity, small time, large and time are given. A numerical solution technique for the solution of the general case is given. Examples of the exact transient response of an airfoil are presented.

The observed ozone flux by transient eddies, 0-30 km

Ozonesonde data are matched with concomitant rawinsonde data to provide a direct determination of horizontal, meridional, flux of ozone by the transient eddies. Data are from 27 stations in 4 regions: eastern and western North America, western Europe, and Japan. Results confirm the existence of significant northward flux near 40 deg N, 10-18 km, in winter and spring, as shown by previous investigators. However, areas of significant equatorward flux are found at high mid-latitudes, 10-16 km, over North America in winter and spring, and at all 3 Japanese stations, 10-18 km, in spring. Trasient eddy fluxes are typically small in summer, and are also small throughout the troposphere and most of the middle stratosphere.

Recovered transient load analysis for payload structural systems

A recovered transient analysis technique is proposed wherein the results of a previous launch vehicle/payload system can be used to obtain the information on a new payload structure to be launched by an identical launch vehicle. The advantage of the proposed method is that the complete analysis can be performed within the payload organization with the same accuracy as that of a full scale, multiorganizational loads analysis. Also, the flight measured interface accelerations can be used as the forcing functions for more realistic representations of the dynamic environments.

Location of the gamma-ray transient event of 1979 March 5

The paper discusses the gamma event of Mar. 5, 1979, the most intense burst of nonsolar high-energy photons ever recorded, which was observed by 12 gamma burst instruments on nine spacecraft. The fast rise time of the event and ephemeris and absolute time information from the spacecraft are considered, and a unique and redundantly determined 1 x 2 arcmin error box centered at R.A. = 5h 25.95m, decl. = -66 deg 07.1 arcmin (equinox 1950.0) is found. Statistical arguments favor identification with the SNR N49, located within the box. It is suggested that if N49 was the source of the transient, then peak gamma-ray and hard X-5ay luminosity was between 10 to the 44th and 10 to the 45th ergs/s, and the total radiated energy was between 10 to the 43rd and 10 to the 44th ergs.

Transient stress intensity factors for edge and corner cracks in quench-test specimens

The transient temperature and stress fields in a quenched rectangular bar were computed and used to determine the stress intensity factors for midside and corner-edge cracks. The stress intensity factors, KI, are presented as a function of time, flaw size, and aspect ratio. The variations of KI along the crack edge are given and the self-limiting growth of the crack depth is discussed in relation to the nonlimited surface growth.
