Ferrite logic reliability study

Development and use of digital circuits called all-magnetic logic are reported. In these circuits the magnetic elements and their windings comprise the active circuit devices in the logic portion of a system. The ferrite logic device belongs to the all-magnetic class of logic circuits. The FLO device is novel in that it makes use of a dual or bimaterial ferrite composition in one physical ceramic body. This bimaterial feature, coupled with its potential for relatively high speed operation, makes it attractive for high reliability applications. (Maximum speed of operation approximately 50 kHz.)

Accurate, reliable prototype earth horizon sensor head

The design and performance is described of an accurate and reliable prototype earth sensor head (ARPESH). The ARPESH employs a detection logic 'locator' concept and horizon sensor mechanization which should lead to high accuracy horizon sensing that is minimally degraded by spatial or temporal variations in sensing attitude from a satellite in orbit around the earth at altitudes in the 500 km environ 1,2. An accuracy of horizon location to within 0.7 km has been predicted, independent of meteorological conditions. This corresponds to an error of 0.015 deg-at 500 km altitude. Laboratory evaluation of the sensor indicates that this accuracy is achieved. First, the basic operating principles of ARPESH are described; next, detailed design and construction data is presented and then performance of the sensor under laboratory conditions in which the sensor is installed in a simulator that permits it to scan over a blackbody source against background representing the earth space interface for various equivalent plant temperatures.

Reliability improvement of wire bonds subjected to fatigue stresses.

The failure of wire bonds due to repeated flexure when semiconductor devices are operated in an on-off mode has been investigated. An accelerated fatigue testing apparatus was constructed and the major fatigue variables, aluminum alloy composition, and bonding mechanism, were tested. The data showed Al-1% Mg wires to exhibit superior fatigue characteristics compared to Al-1% Cu or Al-1% Si and ultrasonic bonding to be better than thermocompression bonding for fatigue resistance. Based on these results highly reliable devices were fabricated using Al-1% Mg wire with ultrasonic bonding which withstood 120,000 power cycles with no failures.

The robustness of reliability predictions for series systems of identical components.

The robustness of reliability predictions based on the exponential failure law is investigated under possible deviations within the Weibull family of failure distributions. Regions of robustness are provided for series systems of N identical components, N = 1(1)15; i.e., regions in the space of the Weibull shape parameter, within which one may safely use the exponential prediction procedure and have no more than a prespecified error.

Reliability-based econometrics of aerospace structural systems: Design criteria and test options

The design criteria and test options for aerospace structural reliability were investigated. A decision methodology was developed for selecting a combination of structural tests and structural design factors. The decision method involves the use of Bayesian statistics and statistical decision theory. Procedures are discussed for obtaining and updating data-based probabilistic strength distributions for aerospace structures when test information is available and for obtaining subjective distributions when data are not available. The techniques used in developing the distributions are explained.

Optimal regime and conditioning time of transistors for equipment with increased reliability

It is shown that an economically justified choice of regime and conditioning time for transistors for equipment of increased reliability is impossible without analyzing the stabilization time of the transistor parameters. The optimal regime and conditioning time are well founded. A method is presented for evaluating the optimal conditioning time by technical economic indexes.

Performance of a 15 cm ion thruster with reliable restart capability

Experimental evaluation of a modified SERT II thruster with dished grids capable of producing a 600 ma ion beam at 2690 sec specific impulse and achieving rapid, reliable startup is described. In addition to steady-state performance curves, thruster performance is examined over the duration of rapid startup and one hour operating sequence. Rapid startup utilizing high voltage spark ignition of the main and neutralizer cathodes is described. Minimal deterioration of the cathodes and the ignition system during 1000 neutralizer cathode startups and 2000 main cathode startups is demonstrated. The need for heaters and a vaporizer control system to facilitate more rapid startup is identified.

Delta's inexpensive, reliable, and versatile third generation upper stage

The need for larger diameter fairings to encapsulate spacecraft designed to use Delta's increased lifting capabilities resulted in hammer-head design configurations that would have unaccepably degraded vehicle flight characteristics. This situation led to the development of the Straight Eight configuration. The towed mode arrangement for the second stage negated the requirement for the engine compartment structure, thus establishing the potential for an improved packaging of the hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Therefore, with cost reduction and reliability improvement objectives, a second stage propulsion system improvement program was initiated. The paper will describe these improvements and their system benefits.

Alternating bending-steady torque fatigue reliability

Results generated by three unique fatigue reliability research machines which can apply alternating-bending loads combined with steady torque are presented. Six-inch long, AISI steel, grooved specimens with a stress concentration factor of 1.42 and Rockwell C 35/40 hardness were subjected to various combinations of these loads and cycled to failure. The generated cycles-to-failure and staircase-testing data are statistically analyzed to develop distributional S-N and Goodman diagrams. Various failure theories are investigated to determine which one best represents the data. The effect of the groove and of the various combined bending-torsion loads on the finite and endurance life strength of such components, as well as on the Goodman diagram, are determined. Design applications are presented.

Apogee motor rocketry reliability improvements

Since 1963, solid-propellant apogee motors have been placing satellites into geosynchronous orbits. Major technological breakthroughs are not required to satisfy future mission requirements; however, there is a need to improve reliability to enhance cost effectiveness. A summary of results and conclusions derived from a review of missions, where failure of a solid motor was inferred, and from a correlation of system factors with failures are reported. Highlights of a solid motor diagnostic instrumentation study are presented. Finally, recommendations are provided for areas of future apogee motor upgrade, which will increase project cost effectiveness by reducing the potential for future flight failures.

Unpowered to powered failure rate ratio - A key reliability parameter

It is shown that the initial assumption of the ratio of unpowered to powered failure rates can have a strong influence on the design of a modular system intended for space missions. The analysis is performed for parallel systems and for triple modular redundant systems. Parallel systems are shown to be much more sensitive to the unpowered to powered failure rate ratio than the TMR/Spares systems, however, regardless of which standby redundancy technique is considered, the dependence of the system reliability on this ratio increases as the number of standby spares increases.

The reliability of the daily quick look solar wind velocities as indicators of interplanetary activity

It is shown that the daily quick look solar wind velocities based on the Ames Research Center solar wind plasma data obtained on the Pioneer spacecraft are surprisingly reliable indicators of interplanetary activity. These velocities can appropriately be used in correlation studies with an average accuracy of plus or minus 5%. This accuracy reflects the 'jitter' in the solar wind velocity during quiescent intervals and across high-speed streams.

The reliability impact of mission abort strategies on redundant flight computer systems

This correspondence presents a reliability model for a redundant flight computer system with standby sparing, taking into account various mission abort strategies. A mission rule to initiate a mission abort after a predetermined number of detected computer failures and to return to earth with the remaining computers is shown to result in: (1) little improvement of crew safety unless computer error coverage is nearly perfect, and (2) significant degradation in mission success whenever coverage is high.
