Impact of dynamic Jahn-Teller effect on magnetic excitations, lattice vibration, and thermal conductivity in U 𝑥 ⁢T⁢h 1−𝑥 ⁡O 2 system

Vibrational and magnetic properties of single-crystal uranium-thorium dioxide (U 𝑥 ⁢T⁢h 1−𝑥⁡ O 2 ) with a full range of 0 < 𝑥 < 1 are investigated. Thorium dioxide is a diamagnet whose thermal properties are governed by lattice vibration. The addition of paramagnetic uranium ions leads to the emergence of magnetic effects that alter the thermophysical properties noticeably even at room temperature. The interaction of phonons with magnetic moments of uranium 5⁢𝑓 electrons mediated by magnetoelastic coupling results in an anomalous low-temperature thermal conductivity profile. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicates a departure from the Curie-Weiss relationship characteristic of noninteracting paramagnetic ions, previously associated with the dynamic Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect characterized by coupling between spin and the oxygen sublattice. The T 2⁢g Raman peak position follows a nonlinear trend as a function of uranium concentration and hints that these Raman active optical modes play a role in either DJT or in mediating quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. A first-principle-based thermal transport model is implemented to explain the low-temperature transport measurements, where the anomalous reduction is attributed to phonon-spin resonant scattering. The interplay between spins and phonons is also captured using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) measurements of phonon linewidths. Our results provide insights into the phonon interactions with the magnetic excitations governing DJT effect and impacting the low-temperature thermal transport processes in this material system. Furthermore, these findings have implications for understanding low-temperature thermal transport and magnetic properties in advanced materials for information processing and energy applications.

Ferroaxial phonons in chiral and polar Ni⁢Co 2 ⁢Te⁢O 6

Perfect circular dichroism has been observed in Raman scattering by optical phonons in single chiral domain NiCo 2 TeO 6 crystals. The selection rules for optical phonons are determined by the combination of the chiral structure C and electric polarization P along the c axis. These two symmetry operations are equivalent to the ferroaxial order (C·P) = A, so the observed optical phonons are referred to as ferroaxial. For a given Raman scattering geometry, the observed effect may also be described as a perfect nonreciprocal propagation of the ferroaxial optical phonons, whose preferable q-vector direction is determined by the sign of A. Here, the combination of Raman scattering and polarization plane rotation of the transmitted white light allows for identification of the direction of electric polarization P in monodomain chiral crystals. In addition to the ferroaxial selection rules for optical phonons, a weaker ferroaxial dichroism was observed for the magnon peak at 18 cm −1 .

Probing charge density wave phases and the Mott transition in 1 T -TaS 2 by inelastic light scattering

We present a polarization-resolved, high-resolution Raman scattering study of the three consecutive charge density wave (CDW) regimes in 1T - TaS 2 single crystals, supported by ab initio calculations. Our analysis of the spectra within the low-temperature commensurate (C-CDW) regime shows P$\bar3$ symmetry of the system, thus excluding the previously proposed triclinic stacking of the “star-of-David” structure, and promoting trigonal or hexagonal stacking instead. The spectra of the high-temperature incommensurate (IC-CDW) phase directly project the phonon density of states due to the breaking of the translational invariance, supplemented by sizable electron-phonon coupling. Between 200 and 352 K, our Raman spectra show contributions from both the IC-CDW and the C-CDW phases, indicating their coexistence in the so-called nearly commensurate (NC-CDW) phase. The temperature dependence of the symmetry-resolved Raman conductivity indicates the stepwise reduction of the density of states in the CDW phases, followed by a Mott transition within the C-CDW phase. We determine the size of the Mott gap to be Ω gap ≈ 170 – 190 meV, and track its temperature dependence.

Insights into hyperbolic phonon polaritons in h – BN using Raman scattering from encapsulated transition metal dichalcogenide layers

Alternative techniques for probing hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs) in two-dimensional materials will support the development of the emerging technologies in this field. Previous reports have shown that it is possible for W Se 2 monolayers in contact with the hexagonal boron nitride (h– BN) to generate HPPs in the h– BN via Raman scattering. In this paper, we set out our results on HPP Raman scattering induced in h– BN by W Se 2 and Mo Se 2 monolayers including multiple resonances at which the Raman scattering is enhanced. Analysis of the observed Raman line shapes demonstrates that Raman scattering allows HPPs with wave vectors with magnitudes significantly in excess of 15 000 cm –1 to be probed. Finally, we present evidence that the Raman scattering can probe HPPs with frequencies less than the expected lower bound on the reststrahlen band, suggesting new HPP physics still waits to be discovered.

Room-temperature large magnetoelectricity in a transition metal doped ferroelectric perovskite

There is increasing interest in novel magnetoelectric (ME) materials that exhibit robust ME coupling at room-temperature (RT) for advanced memory, energy, spintronics, and other multifunctional device applications, by making use of the ability to control polarization with a magnetic field and/or magnetization via an electric field. Obtaining ME materials with strong ME coupling, understanding the origin, and manipulating its processing along with composition to realize large ME coefficients at RT constitute an important step in multiferroic research. To address this, we have investigated the multiferroic and ME properties of Ni-doped Pb(Zr 0.20 Ti 0.80 )O 3 (PZT). We find that the ferroelectric (T C ~ 700 K) and weak ferromagnetic (~ 602 K) phase transitions of Ni-doped PZT are well above RT, leading to a strong ME coupling coefficient (α E,31 ) of 11.7 mVcm -1 Oe -1 (H ac = 1 Oe and f = 1 kHz). While X-ray diffraction suggests a single-phase material, high resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals regions with and without Ni present; thus magnetoelectric coupling between two phases is possible. First-principle calculations suggest the (Ni Pb ) × defect is likely to be responsible for the experimental observed magnetism and ME coupling in Ni-doped PZT. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Ni-doped PZT exhibits low loss tangent, low leakage current, large saturation polarization and weak ferromagnetism. Ultimately, our work demonstrates that Ni-doped PZT is a cost-effective RT multiferroic with strong ME coupling.

Relaxation timescales and electron-phonon coupling in optically pumped $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+\mathcal{x}}}$ revealed by time-resolved Raman scattering

Time-resolved measurements provide a new way to disentangle complex interactions in quantum materials due to their different timescales. We used pump-probe Raman scattering to investigate the apical oxygen vibration in $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+\mathcal{x}}}$ under nonequilibrium conditions. Time dependence of the phonon population demonstrated strong electron-phonon coupling. Most importantly, the phonon shifts to a higher energy due to transient smearing of the Fermi surface in a remarkable agreement with diagrammatic theory. Here we also discuss insights into photoinduced superconductivity reported at lower doping that follow from these results.

Phonon spectrum of $\mathrm{Pr_2Zr_2O_7}$ and $\mathrm{Pr_2Ir_2O_7}$ as evidence of coupling of the lattice with electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom

Magnetic materials with pyrochlore crystal structure form exotic magnetic states due to the high lattice frustration. Here in this work we follow the effects of coupling of the lattice and electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in two praseodymium-based pyrochlores $\mathrm{Pr_2Zr_2O_7}$ and $\mathrm{Pr_2Ir_2O_7}$. In either of these materials, the presence of magnetic interactions does not lead to magnetically ordered low temperature states; however, their electronic properties are different. A comparison of Raman phonon spectra of $\mathrm{Pr_2Zr_2O_7}$ and $\mathrm{Pr_2Ir_2O_7}$ allows us to identify magnetoelastic coupling in $\mathrm{Pr_2Zr_2O_7}$ that elucidates its magnetic properties at intermediate temperatures and allows us to characterize phonon-electron scattering in the semimetallic $\mathrm{Pr_2Ir_2O_7}$. We also show that the effects of random disorder on the Raman phonon spectra is small.

Vibrational properties of CuInP 2 S 6 across the ferroelectric transition

In order to explore the properties of a two-sublattice ferroelectric, we measured the infrared and Raman scattering response of CuInP 2 S 6 across the ferroelectric and glassy transitions and compared our findings to a symmetry analysis, calculations of phase stability, and lattice dynamics. In addition to uncovering displacive character and a large hysteresis region surrounding the ferroelectric transition temperature T C , we identify the vibrational modes that stabilize the polar phase and confirm the presence of two ferroelectric variants with opposite polarizations. Below T C , a poorly understood relaxational or glassy transition at T g is characterized by local structure changes in the form of subtle peak shifting and activation of low frequency out-of-plane Cu- and In-containing modes. Here, the latter are due to changes in the Cu/In coordination environments and associated order-disorder processes. Moreover, T g takes place in two steps with another large hysteresis region and significant underlying scattering. Combined with imaging of the room temperature phase separation, this effort lays the groundwork for studying CuInP 2 S 6 under external stimuli and in the ultrathin limit.

Signatures of non-Loudon-Fleury Raman scattering in the Kitaev magnet 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3

We investigate the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 by means of inelastic Raman scattering. The spectra exhibit the coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasiparticles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the “non-Loudon- Fleury” one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently. The corresponding microscopic mechanism is similar to the one leading to the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction Γ (because it involves a combination of both direct and ligand-mediated exchange paths) but is otherwise completely unexpected within the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory of Raman scattering. Furthermore, the present experimental verification therefore calls for a drastic reevaluation of Raman scattering in similar systems with strong spin-orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.

Tracking the evolution from isolated dimers to many-body entanglement in $\mathrm{NaLu}_x \mathrm{Yb}_{1-x}\mathrm{Se_2}$

Here, we synthesize homogeneous compositions of NaLu x Yb 1-x Se 2 , connecting nonmagnetic NaLuSe 2 to the triangular lattice spin liquid candidate NaYbSe 2 . Thermal and magnetic properties are studied as the system evolves from one with dilute magnetic defects to one of a dense magnetic lattice. The field- and temperature-dependent heat capacity show the carriers of entropy cross over from isolated magnetic ions to a correlated lattice born from spin dimers. For the dilute system we estimate the single-ion anisotropy (g ⟂ /g ∥ =3.13) and also the dimer exchange couplings J ⟂ (=5.4 K) and J ⟂ (=9.6 K), in order to draw comparison to the half-doped and full magnetic compounds.

Spinons and damped phonons in the spin- 1 2 quantum liquid Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 observed by Raman scattering

In spin-1/2 Mott insulators, nonmagnetic quantum liquid phases are often argued to arise when the system shows no magnetic ordering, but identifying positive signatures of these phases or related spinon quasiparticles can be elusive. Here, we use Raman scattering to provide three signatures for spinons in a possible spin-orbit quantum liquid material Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 : (1) a broad hump, which we show can arise from Luttinger liquid spinons in Raman with parallel photon polarizations normal to one-dimensional chains; (2) strong phonon damping from phonon-spin coupling via the spin-orbit interaction; and (3) the absence of (1) and (2) in the magnetically ordered phase that is produced when 2% of Ba is substituted by Sr [(Ba 0.98 Sr 0.02 ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 ]. Furthermore, the phonon damping via itinerant spinons seen in this quantum liquid insulator suggests a mechanism for enhancing thermoelectricity in strongly correlated conductors, through a neutral quantum liquid that need not affect electronic transport.

Effects of Na deficiency on spin dynamics in the Mott insulating Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8

Here, we report on Raman scattering and 23 Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations of j eff = 1/2 hyperkagome antiferromagnet Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8 , which lies in the Mott insulating state. Our Raman scattering experiments unveil remarkable parallels between the magnetic excitations of the pristine Na 4 Ir 3 O 8 and the Kitaev honeycomb material Na 2 IrO 3 , which are characterized by dominant fractional spinon excitations. In the case of moderate Na-deficient Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8 , however, a substantial suppression of the magnetic excitations is observed, alluding to the notable influence of charge fluctuations on spin dynamics. In addition, our site-specific 23 Na NMR measurements offer further insights into the spin dynamics when a minor concentration of holes is introduced into a spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator. Specifically, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/ T 1 reveals the emergence of pseudogaplike correlations at the Na(2) site, alongside a critical slowing down behavior at the Na(1) and Na(3) sites. These findings showcase the intricate interplay between itinerant holes and magnetic correlations in a spin-liquid-like background.

Unconventional spin-orbit torques from sputtered MoTe 2 films

Materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and low crystalline symmetry are promising for generating large unconventional spin-orbit torques (SOTs), such as in-plane fieldlike (FL) torques and out-of-plane dampinglike (DL) torques, which can effectively manipulate and deterministically switch an out-of-plane magnetization without the need for additional external in-plane magnetic fields. Here, we report SOTs generated by magnetron-sputtered 1⁢T' MoTe 2 /Permalloy (Py; Ni 80 ⁢Fe 20 )/MgO heterostructures using both spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) and second harmonic Hall measurements. We observed unconventional FL and DL torques in our samples due to spins polarized normal to the interface of MoTe 2 and Py layers, and studied the influence of crystallographic order and MoTe 2 layer thickness on the SOTs. By comparing the Raman spectra of 1⁢T' MoTe 2 samples prepared in different ways, we found a tensile strain in sputtered MoTe 2 films, which might further enhance the generation of unconventional torques by reducing the symmetry of 1⁢T' MoTe 2 .

Signatures of fractionalization in the optical phonons of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3

Here, in this study, we propose that the signatures of spin fractionalization in quantum magnets can be identified through a detailed analysis of the temperature dependence of the asymmetric Fano lineshape of optical phonons overlapping with a continuum of spin excitations. We focus on the hyperhoneycomb magnet 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 , a promising candidate for being in proximity to a three-dimensional Kitaev quantum spin liquid. The Raman response in 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 notably displays a distinctive asymmetric Fano lineshape in the 24 meV Raman-active optical phonon. This asymmetry arises from the interaction between the discrete phonon mode and the spin excitation continuum, which could be fractionalized if the material is indeed near a quantum spin-liquid phase. Our theoretical model considers the coupling of this optical phonon to Majorana fermions in the Kitaev model on the hyperhoneycomb lattice. Our findings reveal that the temperature-dependent Fano lineshape is consistent with the fractionalization of spins into Majorana fermions and ℤ ⁢2 fluxes.

Synthesis of Yttrium Superhydride Superconductor with a Transition Temperature up to 262 K by Catalytic Hydrogenation at High Pressures

The recent observation of room-temperature superconductivity will undoubtedly lead to a surge in the discovery of new, dense, hydrogen-rich materials. The rare earth metal superhydrides are predicted to have very high-T c superconductivity that is tunable with changes in stoichiometry or doping. Here we report the synthesis of an yttrium superhydride that exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature of 262 K at 182±8 GPa. A palladium thin film assists the synthesis by protecting the sputtered yttrium from oxidation and promoting subsequent hydrogenation. Phonon-mediated superconductivity is established by the observation of zero resistance, an isotope effect and the reduction of T c under an external magnetic field. Furthermore, the upper critical magnetic field is 103 T at zero temperature.

Optically Induced Anisotropy in Time-Resolved Scattering: Imaging Molecular-Scale Structure and Dynamics in Disordered Media with Experiment and Theory

Time-resolved scattering experiments enable imaging of materials at the molecular scale with femtosecond time resolution. However, in disordered media they provide access to just one radial dimension thus limiting the study of orientational structure and dynamics. Here we introduce a rigorous and practical theoretical framework for predicting and interpreting experiments combining optically induced anisotropy and time-resolved scattering. Using impulsive nuclear Raman and ultrafast x-ray scattering experiments of chloroform and simulations, we demonstrate that this framework can accurately predict and elucidate both the spatial and temporal features of these experiments.

Magnetosynthesis effect on magnetic order, phonons, and magnons in single-crystal Sr 2 ⁢ IrO 4

It was shown earlier that applying a magnetic field during the growth of Sr 2 IrO 4 , also known as “field-alteration”, induces significant changes to its structural, magnetic, and transport properties. However, the microscopic nature of these changes is enigmatic. Here, in this study, we employed resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering, as well as Raman scattering, to investigate samples from two batches of Sr 2 IrO 4 grown in magnetic fields of different strengths. Our findings reveal that samples grown in a weaker magnetic field have similar magnetic order to non-altered samples, whereas those grown in a stronger field show a different stacking of weak in-plane ferromagnetic moments. Additionally, we observed significant softening and broadening of select Raman-active phonons in the field altered samples, with a stronger effect in the samples grown in the stronger field. We discuss insights that our results provide into the microscopic nature of field-alteration in Sr 2 IrO 4 .
