Forward contamination of samples with cells or biomarkers from Earth would seriously compromise interpretation of results of a Space sample return mission.
Microbial biofilms representing both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were artificially coated onto aluminum metal surfaces that are chiefly used in building spacecraft.
In recent years, the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been exploited via radio occultation techniques to obtain profiles of refractivity, temperature, pressure and water vapor in the neutral atmosphere and electron density in the ionosphere.
The SeaWinds instrument is the first pencil-beam scatterometer to routinely measure ocean surface winds from space.

A typical positioner used for positioning an antenna under test on an antenna range has two or three rotation axes arranged in such a manner as to facilitate the taking of data along certain paths through the antenna pattern.

Generally speaking, many photonic engineers, while working in a systems development mode, still focus on presenting the unique physical details of the optical elements, instead of using functional representation to describe the system. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce symbols that can be used to represent the functional intent of most of the phased array architecture.
A new model for the development of proces information systems is proposed. It is robust and inexpensive, capable of providing timely, neccessary information to the user by integrating Products, Instructions, Examples, Tools, and Process.
The TOPEX/Poseidon Microwave Radiometer (TMR) is a 3-frequency radiometer flown on the TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) satellite in low Earth orbit. It operates at 18, 21 and 37 GHz in a nadir only viewing direction which is co-aligned with the T/P radar altimeters. TMR monitors and corrects for the electrical path delay of the altimeter radar signal due to water vapor and non-precipitating liquid water in the atmosphere. This paper describes the TMR instrument and the radiometric instrument calibration required to derive antenna temperature (T_A) from the raw digital data. T_A precision of 0.4 K is predicted on orbit in all expected thermal environments. T_A accuracy of 0.5-0.6 K is expected following a post-launch field calibration campaign. When uncertainties related to antenna sidelobe corrections are included, this T_A accuracy yields a brightness temperature accuracy of 0.7- 0.8 K...
