Investigation of the agricultural resources in Sri Lanka

The author has identified the following significant results. Several in-house capabilities were developed. The facilities to prepare color composites of excellent quality were developed, using bulk B/W 70 mm transparencies or 1:1,000,000 positive transparencies. These color composites were studied through optical devices on light tables. A zoom transfer scope was also added, enabling direct transfer of LANDSAT composite data on to base maps.

A mass reduction effort of the electric and hybrid vehicle

Weight reduction, cost competitiveness, and elimination of the intrusion beam resulted from the redesign and fabrication using composite materials of the door outer panel and intrusion beam from a Chevrolet Impala. The basis of the redesign involved replacing these two steel parts with a single compression molding using the unique approach of simultaneously curing a sheet molding compound outside panel with a continuous glass fiber intrusion strap. A weight reduction of nearly 11 pounds per door was achieved. Additional weight savings are possible by taking advantage of the elimination of the intrusion beam to design thinner door structures. The parts consolidation approach allows the composite structure to be cost competitive with the original steel design for both the lower production car models and for the near to midterm production vehicles using current state of the art composite production techniques. The design, prototype fabrication, costing, material, properties and compression molding production requirements are discussed.

Petrography and olivine mineral chemistry of chondrules and inclusions in the Allende meteorite

The examination of 19 polished-thin sections from a sample of the Allende meteorite reveals that anhedral olivine chondrules (OCs) are the most abundant chondrule type (19.7% of total chondrules + inclusions), followed by recrystallized OCs (7.5%), euhedral OCs (2.9%), glassy/skeletal OCs (2.7%), and barred OCs (2.3%). The most abundant inclusions are those comprised of many small olivine crystals with varying amounts of opaque minerals and glass (31.5%), followed by fine grained inclusions (16.1%) and single olivine crystals (15.7%). Microprobe analyses of olivines show that recrystallized and barred chondrules are the most forsteritic and exhibit relatively narrow compositional ranges, whereas single crystals have the widest range, from Fa sub 0.3 to Fa sub 49.

Pioneer Venus Orbiter neutral gas mass spectrometer experiment

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter Neutral Mass Spectrometer (ONMS) is designed to measure the vertical and horizontal density variations of the major neutral constituents in the upper atmosphere of Venus. The mass spectrometer sensor includes a retarding potential ion source, hyperbolic quadrupole rod analyzer, and electron multiplier detector. The supporting electronic system consists of hybrid integrated circuits to reduce weight and power. The ONMS instrument was launched aboard the Pioneer Venus Orbiter on May 20, 1978, and turned on in orbit around Venus on December 4, 1978. It has operated flawlessly for over a Venus year (243 earth days) and has returned data of the composition of the major constituents in the Venus atmosphere between the altitudes of 150 and 350 km.

IUE observations of the UV spectrum of Comet Bradfield

Comet Bradfield (1979), discovered shortly after perihelion on Christmas day 1979, is characterized by a retrograde orbit of period approximately equal to 250 yr. This orbit was very favorable for observation by the IUE satellite, and the first observations, the preliminary results of which are reported here, were made on 10 and 11 January 1980. Previously, comprehensive vacuum UV cometary spectra were available only for Comet West (1976VI) from rocket observations and Comet Seargent (1978m) with IUE, hence three comets have now been observed in the wavelength region where most of the major constituents are detectable spectroscopically. The UV spectra of these comets are remarkably similar, despite large differences between them in the gas-to-dust ratio and the different heliocentric distances at which the observations were made, and although the statistical basis is still very small, the implication for cosmogony is that nearly all comets have the same primary composition and origin.

Electron mobility enhancement in epitaxial multilayer Si-Si/1-x/Ge/x/ alloy films on /100/Si

Enhanced Hall-effect mobilities have been measured in epitaxial (100)-oriented multilayer n-type Si/Si(1-x)Ge(x) films grown on single-crystal Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition. Mobilities from 20 to 40% higher than that of epitaxial Si layers and about 100% higher than that of epitaxial SiGe layers on Si were measured for the doping range 8 x 10 to the 15th to 10 to the 17th/cu cm. No mobility enhancement was observed in multilayer p-type (100) films and n-type (111)-oriented films. Experimental studies included the effects upon film properties of layer composition, total film thickness, doping concentrations, layer thickness, and growth temperature.

Possible lunar source areas of meteorite ALHA 81005 Geochemical remote sensing information

Antarctic meteorite ALHA 81005 is a regolith breccia apparently sent to earth by an impact event in the lunar highlands. Laboratory studies of this sample provide information that is used to understand the source region on the moon using remote sensing data. The meteorites low thorium content is inconsistent with thorium values measured for the central lunar nearside from orbit with Apollo gamma-ray spectrometers. Similarly, the mineral assemblages inferred from near-IR spectra of small impact craters on the lunar nearside do not exhibit the significant component of olivine and Fe-bearing feldspar that is observed in the meteorite spectra. The existing remote sensing data suggest the most probable source region for ALHA 81005 is the nearside limb or the lunar farside and that the composition of ALHA 81005 represents a surface unit that has not previously been extensively sampled.

Aliphatic-Aromatic Heterocyclics as Potential Thermoplastics for Composite Matrices

The successful development of impact- and solvent-resistant thermoplastic systems for glass graphite composites is particularly attractive because of the demonstrated streamlined manufacturability of such composites. Hypothetically, thermoplastics only require simple heating and cooling cycles for component manufacture, whereas thermosets require precise, and possibly extended heating schedules which must be consistent with the cure chemistry. The sensitivity of the majority of existing thermoplastics to aircraft fluids and other solvents preempts their serious consideration in aircraft components. This is the basic reason that Acurex proposed insolubility in common solvents as the starting point. The target properties are summarized as follows: (1) prepreg properties (use of conventional prepregging equipment, 6+ months shelf stability, processability, and thermoformability); and (2) composite properties (-54 C to 93 C capability, good mechanical properties, good environmental properties, and impact resistance).

Structure-to-property Relationships in Addition Cured Polymers 2: Resin Tg Composite Initial Mechanical Properties of Norbornenyl Cured Polyimide Resins

PRM (polymerization of monomeric reactants) methodology was used to prepare thirty different polyimide oligomeric resins. Monomeric composition as well as chain length between sites of crosslinks were varied to examine their effects on glass transition temperature (Tg) of the cured/postcured resins. An almost linear correlation of Tg versus molecular distance between the crosslinks was observed. An attempt was made to correlate Tg with initial mechanical properties (flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength) of unidirectional graphite fiber composites prepared with these resins. However, the scatter in mechanical strength data prevented obtaining as clear a correlation as was observed for the structural modification/crosslink distance versus Tg. Instead, only a range of composite mechanical properties was obtained at the test temperatures studied (room temperature, 288 and 316 C). Perhaps more importantly, what did become apparent during the attempted correlation study was: (1) that PMR methodology could be used to prepare composites from resins that contain a wide variety of monomer modifications, and (2) that these composites almost invariably provided satisfactory initial mechanical properties as long as the resins selected were melt processable.

Microstructures of niobium-germanium alloys processed in inert gas in the 100 meter drop tube

The 100 meter drop tube at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center has been used for a series of experiments with niobium-germanium alloys. These experiments were conducted with electromagnetic levitation melting in a 200 torr helium environment. Liquid alloys experienced large degrees of undercooling prior to solidification in the drop tube. Several interesting metastable structures were observed. However, the recalescence event prevented extended solid solubility of germanium in the A-15 beta phase. Liquids of eutectic composition were found to undercool in the presence of solid alpha and solid Nb5Ge3.

I-129/I-127 variations among enstatite chondrites

The iodine isotopic compositions and corresponding I-Xe ages were obtained for eight enstatite chondrites, bringing the total number of enstatite chondrites examined by the I-Xe technique to 11. Iodine isotopic compositions of these 11 chondrites indicate a well-defined hiatus correlated with the hiatus in chemical composition defining the two distinct enstatite groups: EH(4,5) and EL(6). Judging by the I-129/I-127 ratios and assuming that both the EH and EL groups originated from a reservoir with a uniform initial iodine isotopic composition, the EH(4,5) chondrites were estimated to be about 4 mln older than the El chondrites.

Chemistry and petrology of Apollo 17 highland coarse fines - Plutonic and melt rocks

A suite of 21 fragments from the Apollo 17 coarse-fines consists of ferroan anorthosites, anorthositic gabbros, granulitic and regolith breccias, and impact melts. These samples belong to known petrographic and chemical groups. Three ferroan anorthosites were found, including one which appears to be the lowest in REE (La = 0.60X) and probably the purest of the Apollo 17 anorthosites identified thus far. The ferroan suite is a more important component at the Apollo 17 site than previously recognized. The Apollo 17 melt rocks are similar to other samples with LKFM and low-K KREEP compositions and show less diversity in trace elements (REE) than the Apollo 15 melt rocks. Apollo 17 melt rocks consist of aphanitic and poikilitic types that show some compositional variability with identical Ni/Ir, suggesting that either two distinct melt sheets formed by similar projectiles, or compositional heterogeneity within one melt sheet is possible.

Non-ideality near the monotectic composition of a miscibility-gap type system - Succinonitrile-water

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of near monotectic succinonitrile-water solutions, fast-quenched in hydrophilic and hydrophobic DSC pans, indicate, by degree of undercooling, thst there may be significant dependence of final ingot microstructure on the pre-quench equilibration temperature. Partial molal-volume determinations from density data, along with DSC data, suggest the nature of temperature dependent component associations from 20 to 55 C in homogeneous solutions. The undercooling profile in a hydrophilic container is explained in terms of solution-composition shifts arising from the Gibbs surface excess. The evidence shows that temperature-dependent preferred component aggregates may modulate surface-composition gradients. Similar effects may be present through intermetallic compound formation in metallic monotectic alloys.

Giotto IMS measurements of the production rate of hydrogen cyanide in the coma of Comet Halley

The ion composition measurements in the ionosphere of Comet Halley by the ion mass spectrometer (IMS) experiment on the Giotto spacecraft are used to estimate the relative abundance of HCN. From a comparison of the normalized number density of ions with mass-to-charge (M/q) ratio of 28 AMU/e with steady-state photochemical models, it can be determined that the production rate of HCN directly from the central nucleus is Q(HCN) is less than about 0.0002 Q(H2O) at the time of Giotto encounter. The related photochemical- model calculations also indicate that Q(NH3)/Q(H2O) at the time of Giotto encounter. The related photo-chemical model calculations also indicate that Q(HN3)/Q(H2O) equals about 0.005, in agreement with recent determination from ground-based observations. The estimated value of Q(HCN) is lower than the relative abundance of Q(HCN)/Q(H2O) of about 0.001, as derived from radio observations of the 88.6 GHz emission of the J = 1 - 0 transition of HCN. The difference may be the result of time variations of the coma composition and dynamics, as well as other model-dependent effects.

Analysis of volcanic surface morphology on Venus from comparison of Arecibo, Magellan, and terrestrial airborne radar data

The paper compares Arecibo Observatory and Magellan radar data for Venus to airborne radar images for potential terrestrial analog surfaces. Volcanic deposits in western Eistla Regio and northern Sedna Planitia are characterized. It is shown that the expected-sense circularly polarized echoes in the 'dark plains' and broad flow aprons of Eistla Regio decrease rapidly with incidence angle. This angular scattering behavior implies surfaces no rougher than terrestrial pahoehoe flows. Polarization ratio comparisons show that the extensive lava flows in Western Eistla Regio and Sedna Planitia are generally consistent with the properties of terrestrial pahoehoe flows, with only limited occurrences of a'a morphology. Three scenarios are suggested. Many of the large flow units in the two study regions were emplaced as complexes of low-effusion rate pahoehoe flows, rather than as higher eruption rate events which might be expected to produce a'a surface textures; the long lava flows were originally emplaced as a'a but have since weathered to a smoother texture; or a combination of atmospheric and magma compositional effects combine to inhibit a'a formation even at high volume eruption rates.

The 1996 Subsonic Aircraft: Contrail and Cloud Effects Special Study

During April 1996 NASA, in conjunction with the DOE, will sponsor a multi-aircraft field campaign to better understand the microphysical and radiative properties of cirrus clouds, the origins of ice nuclei and cloud condensation nuclei in the upper troposphere, and the possible role that the commercial subsonic aircraft fleet might play in altering cloud or aerosol properties. The NASA ER-2 aircraft will be used as a remote sensing platform, while the NASA DC-8 aircraft will be used as an in situ measurement platform. In situ observations will include a full set of size distribution measurements from nano-meter to millimeter sizes, ice water content measurements, gas phase and condensed phase chemical measurements, ice crystal optical phase function measurements, lidar observations of cloud top and cloud base, and atmospheric state measurement. The ER-2 will have lidar, microwave ice water path measurements, as well as visible and infrared spectral measurement. In this presentation the highlights of the mission will be presented. The goal will be to address fundamental questions such as the mode of nucleation of cirrus clouds, the composition of the nuclei on which cirrus form, the degree to which aircraft impact cirrus cloud properties.

Petrography of Lunar Meteorite PCA02007, a New Feldspathic Regolith Breccia

PCA 02007 is a 22.4 g lunar meteorite collected in 2003 near the Pecora Escarpment in Antarctica [1]. PCA is a feldspathic regolith breccia composed of mature regolith. It is compositionally and texturally similar to other feldspathic lunar meteorites (FLMs) [2] and may be launch paired with Yamato 791197 [3]. Here we present a petrographic description and compositions of mineral clasts, glass clasts, lithic clasts, and the bulk meteorite.
