Evaluation of the MARVEL Reactor Inhalation Dose Consequences

A dose consequence analysis was performed to support the preliminary Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation Project (MARVEL) design effort. The purpose of the MARVEL project is to develop a nuclear microreactor applications test bed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to perform research and development on various operational features of microreactors to ultimately improve integration of microreactors to end-user applications. The MARVEL concept is a 100 kilowatt (kW) thermal (kWth) and approximately 20-kW electric (kWe) generating microreactor. The MARVEL system will be located in the INL TREAT facility in the north high-bay equipment pit. The analysis considers the bounding release fractions of the MARVEL reactor concept and documents the dose consequences to the public and collocated worker.

P{sub N} source expansion nodal method in MPACT for boiling water reactors

This paper describes the one-node P{sub N}-Source Expansion Nodal Method (SENM) axial solver for the 2D/1D method recently implemented in MPACT to support Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) analysis. Since the BWR has a more complicated design and strong burnable absorber, the existing PN-Nodal Expansion Method (NEM) axial solver in MPACT may not be sufficient to accurately represent the intranodal flux and source profiles for BWRs. The one-node P{sub N}-SENM has been implemented in this work to reduce the axial spatial discretization error for BWRs. From numerical results, we verify that the P{sub N}-SENM can improve the accuracy of the pin power prediction, and confirm that P{sub N}-SENM can use more than a 1.5 times larger axial mesh size than P{sub N}-NEM to have similar accuracy for the BWR GE14 3D assembly problem. Examination of Ac-225 production from Ra-226 using fast reactor JOYO

In this study, the authors investigated the method of producing the radionuclide Ac{sup 225} used for targeted alpha therapy (TAT). Currently, Ac{sup 225} is mainly generated from ORNL's Th{sup 229} generator, and the annual production amount is limited to about 63 GBq, and methods for generating it using accelerators are under development in each country. The method using an accelerator has the advantage of being able to generate Ac{sup 225} from a small amount of target nuclides with high efficiency but has the disadvantage of not being able to irradiate a large amount of target nuclides at once due to the small irradiation area. Therefore, the authors investigated a method to generate Ac{sup 225} by neutron irradiation of Ra{sup 226} as a target nuclide using the experimental fast reactor JOYO, which has abundant neutrons and a large loading region. Irradiation of Ra{sup 226} with fast neutrons causes a (n, 2n) reaction to generate Ra{sup 225}, and then decay to produce Ac{sup 225}. In addition, although harmful Ac{sup 227} is also produced at the same time by the (n,γ) reaction, first of all the actinium isotope is chemically separated and eliminated. Since the remaining Ra{sup 225} collapses and Ac{sup 225} is produced, pure Ac{sup 225} can be extracted by performing chemical separation again. As a result of the analysis, 1 g of Ra{sup 226} is irradiated with JOYO for 60 days, and milking is performed 4 times every 17.5 days. By doing these three times a year, it was found that about 50 GBq of Ac{sup 225} was generated. (authors)

IMPLEMENTATION OF TURBULENCE MODELING FOR THE COUPLED GRIFFIN-PRONGHORN SIMULATION OF THE MOLTEN SALT FAST REACTOR FOR THE VIRTUAL TEST BED

In support of the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) repository, the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (MSFR) concept is modeled using MOOSE-based tools, notably Griffin and Pronghorn, employing newly implemented initial turbulence models and standard wall functions. The models are adapted to Pronghorn’s spirit of a multidimensional coarse-mesh intermediate fidelity code. Multiphysics simulations of a 2D axisymmetric model of an MSFR are carried out to study the coupling between the different physics.

SULI Internship Deliverables (Flow Orifice Design: Measuring Degas Flow of Experiment Loops at the Advanced Test Reactor)

These deliverables present a design for a new orifice flow meter to be installed in three experiment loops at the Advanced Test Reactor. The current configuration of the experiment loop system has an orifice that is not properly sized to the low flow rates of the degas line of the pressurizer system, causing inaccurate flow measurements. Under consideration of flow conditions and system constraints, an iterative procedure was utilized to determine the optimal sizing for a new orifice. This orifice is designed to accurately and precisely measure the flow rate of the degas line, which will consequently improve control of the pressure and chemistry of the loop pressurizer system. The scope of this project includes recommendations for orifice sizing, material, flange type, face type, and installation location on the loop piping spools. The design is suitable for experiment loops 1D-N, 2B-SE, and 2D-SW and meets all necessary standards.

Development and Validation of a Probabilistic Risk Assessment Model for a Generic Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor

This study looks to develop and validate a probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) model for the modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) using INL’s Systems Analysis Programs for Hands-on Integrated Reliability Evaluations (SAPHIRE) software. Validation against a General Atomics design involves matching event and fault trees to historical frequencies, with a goal of under 15% difference. The research aims to deliver a reliable PRA model to assess the safety of MHTGRs for use within high-temperature industrial applications.

Techno-Economic Assessment of Data Center Load Demand Powered by Small Modular Reactors and Distributed Energy Resources

The rapid increase in data center energy demand, driven by AI and large-scale data processing, poses significant challenges to global energy infrastructure. Data centers require substantial and reliable energy for continuous operations and high-performance computing. Current electrical grids face issues such as transmission bottlenecks and aging infrastructure, making it difficult to meet these demands. Integrating inverter-based-resources (IBRs) like solar and wind presents both opportunities and challenges due to their intermittent nature. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) offer a promising solution with their enhanced safety, modularity, reliability, and scalability, providing consistent base load power ideal for data center operations. This study presents a comprehensive techno-economic assessment of powering data center load demand using a combination of SMRs and IBRs with grid-connected and islanded mode. This study utilized Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) HPC data center hourly load profiles and Xendee microgrid optimization platform to conduct the analysis. In this configuration, SMRs serves as the primary base load power source, consistently providing a steady supply of electricity necessary to meet the minimum load demand of the data center with support from the IBRs. Key performance indicators such as Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), Net Present Value (NPV) has been calculated to assess the economic feasibility. The findings from this research will underscore the strategic benefits of integrating SMR plant with DERs – particularly for critical infrastructure load such as data centers.
