Studies of noble-metal thermocouple stability at high temperatures

Two investigatory studies on performance characteristics of noble-metal thermocouples are described. (1) thermoelectric stability as affected by preferential oxidation of iridium in the system iridium-40% rhodium versus iridium, and (2) the effects of temperature gradients on the emf stability of the systems platinum-13% rhodium versus platinum and iridium-40% rhodium versus iridium, operating in air. The stability investigation was carried out at three temperatures - 1700, 1850, and 2000 C - by comparing the output of the test thermocouple in air with the output of an identically constructed reference thermocouple in nitrogen. The results show that no calibration shift was observed producing a change in output greater than that corresponding to a 2.0% change in the indicated temperature for all samples tested. The investigation of gradient effects was carried out by subjecting test thermocouples to both severe and mild gradients for periods up to 200 hours. For the platinum system, the operating temperature was 1500 C with gradients of 1475 and 700 C/cm; for the iridium system, 2000 C with gradients of 700, 1500, and 1975 C/cm. Exposure to temperature gradients was found to introduce significant changes in calibration for both systems. In both investigations, the thermoelements were examined by means of electron-probe analysis and by metallographic methods to detect chemical and structural changes. Data and micrographs are presented.

Development of TPS flight test and operational instrumentation

Thermal and flow sensor instrumentation was developed for use as an integral part of the space shuttle orbiter reusable thermal protection system. The effort was performed in three tasks: a study to determine the optimum instruments and instrument installations for the space shuttle orbiter RSI and RCC TPS; tests and/or analysis to determine the instrument installations to minimize measurement errors; and analysis using data from the test program for comparison to analytical methods. A detailed review of existing state of the art instrumentation in industry was performed to determine the baseline for the departure of the research effort. From this information, detailed criteria for thermal protection system instrumentation were developed.

Absorption spectrum of Pb I between 1350 and 2041 A

The high resolution absorption spectrum of Pb I is reported between 1350 and 2041 A. Transitions are observed from the 6p2 (1/2,1/2)0, (3/2,1/2)1, and (3/2,1/2)2 levels to levels with J less than or equal to 2 associated with 6pns and 6pnd configurations. Energy levels have been determined with n(asterisk) values as high as 74. More than 500 spectral features and 370 odd parity energy levels are reported, a major part of which are new. These observations include five electric quadrupole transitions and 31 nuclear-spin-induced transitions from the Pb-207 isotope. Ionization limits of 59819.57 per cm and 73900.64 per cm have been determined for levels converging on the 6p 2P(1/2)O and 6p 2P(3/2)O levels of Pb II, respectively. An analysis of these data in terms of Lu-Fano graphical methods and multichannel quantum defect parametrization also is presented.

The application of Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM) thermal data to snow hydrology

The application of HCMM thermal infrared data to snow hydrology and the prediction of snowmelt runoff was evaluated. Data for the Salt Verde watershed in central Arizona and the southern Sierra Nevada in California were analyzed and compared to LANDSAT and NOAA satellite data, U-2 thermal data, and other correlative data. It was determined that HCMM thermal imagery provides data as accurate for snow mapping as does visible imagery, and that in comparison with the reslution of other satellite imagery, it may be the most useful. Data from the HCMM thermal channel, with careful calibration, provides useful snow surface temperature data for hydrological purposes. An approach to an automated method of analysis is presented.

Effects of alloy composition on cyclic flame hot-corrosion attack of cast nickel-base superalloys at 900 deg C

The effects of Cr, Al, Ti, Mo, Ta, Nb, and W content on the hot corrosion of nickel base alloys were investigated. The alloys were tested in a Mach 0.3 flame with 0.5 ppmw sodium at a temperature of 900 C. One nondestructive and three destructive tests were conducted. The best corrosion resistance was achieved when the Cr content was 12 wt %. However, some lower-Cr-content alloys ( 10 wt%) exhibited reasonable resistance provided that the Al content alloys ( 10 wt %) exhibited reasonable resistance provided that the Al content was 2.5 wt % and the Ti content was Aa wt %. The effect of W, Ta, Mo, and Nb contents on the hot-corrosion resistance varied depending on the Al and Ti contents. Several commercial alloy compositions were also tested and the corrosion attack was measured. Predicted attack was calculated for these alloys from derived regression equations and was in reasonable agreement with that experimentally measured. The regression equations were derived from measurements made on alloys in a one-quarter replicate of a 2(7) statistical design alloy composition experiment. These regression equations represent a simple linear model and are only a very preliminary analysis of the data needed to provide insights into the experimental method.

Laboratory investigation of sound transmission through panels and the use of modern data analysis techniques applied to actual aircraft is used to determine methods to reduce general aviation interior noise. The experimental noise reduction characteristics of stiffened flat and curved panels with damping treatment are discussed. The experimental results of double-wall panels used in the general aviation industry are given. The effects of skin panel material, fiberglass insulation and trim panel material on the noise reduction characteristics of double-wall panels are investigated. With few modifications, the classical sound transmission theory can be used to design the interior noise control treatment of aircraft. Acoustic intensity and analysis procedures are included.

Spatial variation of cosmic rays near the heliospheric current sheet

A quantitative comparison between theoretical predictions and observations of the intensity of galactic cosmic rays near the interplanetary current sheet is reported. Comparison of model calculations is made with a statistical analysis of observations of galactic cosmic rays at Earth and the simultaneous position of the current sheet. An ensemble of different current sheet inclinations is used, in order to make the analysis of the computations approximate the method used to analyses the data.

Cosmic rays near the heliospheric current sheet. II - An ensemble approach to comparing theory and observation

A quantitative comparison is carried out between theoretical predictions and observations of the intensity of galactic cosmic rays near the interplanetary current sheet. Model calculations are compared with a statistical analysis of observations of galactic cosmic rays at the earth and the simultaneous position of the current sheet. Since the observations were made over a period of several years, the inclination of the current sheet varied considerably, and comparison with any one model calculation referring to a given inclination would not be appropriate. An ensemble of different current sheet inclinations are used to generate expected values with the model in order to make the analysis of the computations approximate the method used to analyze the data. Agreement is found between theory and observation at energies of the order of a few GeV.

An efficient data dependence analysis for parallelizing compilers

A novel algorithm, called the lambda test, is presented for an efficient and accurate data dependence analysis of multidimensional array references. It extends the numerical methods to allow all dimensions of array references to be tested simultaneously. Hence, it combines the efficiency and the accuracy of the both approaches. This algorithm has been implemented in PARAFRASE, a FORTRAN program parallelization restructurer developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Some experimental results are presented to show its effectiveness.

Knowledge acquisition for expert systems using statistical methods

A common problem in the design of expert systems is the definition of rules from data obtained in system operation or simulation. A statistical method for generating rule bases from numerical data, motivated by an example based on aircraft navigation with multiple sensors is presented. The specific objective is to design an expert system that selects a satisfactory suite of measurements from a dissimilar, redundant set, given an arbitrary navigation geometry and possible sensor failures. The systematic development of a Navigation Sensor Management (NSM) Expert System from Kalman Filter covariance data is described. The development method invokes two statistical techniques: Analysis-of-Variance (ANOVA) and the ID3 algorithm. The ANOVA technique indicates whether variations of problem parameters give statistically different covariance results, and the ID3 algorithm identifies the relationships between the problem parameters using probabilistic knowledge extracted from a simulation example set.

Efficient ICCG on a shared memory multiprocessor

Different approaches are discussed for exploiting parallelism in the ICCG (Incomplete Cholesky Conjugate Gradient) method for solving large sparse symmetric positive definite systems of equations on a shared memory parallel computer. Techniques for efficiently solving triangular systems and computing sparse matrix-vector products are explored. Three methods for scheduling the tasks in solving triangular systems are implemented on the Sequent Balance 21000. Sample problems that are representative of a large class of problems solved using iterative methods are used. We show that a static analysis to determine data dependences in the triangular solve can greatly improve its parallel efficiency. We also show that ignoring symmetry and storing the whole matrix can reduce solution time substantially.

Simplified data reduction methods for the ECT test for mode 3 interlaminar fracture toughness

Simplified expressions for the parameter controlling the load point compliance and strain energy release rate were obtained for the Edge Crack Torsion (ECT) specimen for mode 3 interlaminar fracture toughness. Data reduction methods for mode 3 toughness based on the present analysis are proposed. The effect of the transverse shear modulus, G(sub 23), on mode 3 interlaminar fracture toughness characterization was evaluated. Parameters influenced by the transverse shear modulus were identified. Analytical results indicate that a higher value of G(sub 23) results in a low load point compliance and lower mode 3 toughness estimation. The effect of G(sub 23) on the mode 3 toughness using the ECT specimen is negligible when an appropriate initial delamination length is chosen. A conservative estimation of mode 3 toughness can be obtained by assuming G(sub 23) = G(sub 12) for any initial delamination length.

Geostatistical approaches to interpolation and classification of remote-sensing data from ice surfaces

Geostatistical methods for interpolation and extrapolation techniques are used in glaciological data analysis. The results of a program involving the mapping of the Antarctica from satellite radar altimeter data are discussed. A combination of high and low resolution techniques was applied in the analysis of the Bering Glacier (Alaska). The global positioning system (GPS) located video data collected from small aircraft and the ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images were used. From the perspective of SAR data analysis, the Bering Glacier surge was the opportunity to characterize the surface of fast flowing ice and the rapid changes in the surface roughness.
