Interface markings in crystals experiment MA-060

Doped germanium single crystals with interface demarcation were successfully grown during the Apollo Soyuz Test Project mission. Interface demarcation permitted the determination of the microscopic growth behavior from the onset to the termination of solidification. Preliminary segregation analysis shows striking differences in segregation in the presence of gravity. The correlation between microscopic growth rate behavior and the composition of the solid on the microscale is being evaluated.

Study of orbiter/payload interface communications configuration control board directive from an operational perspective

Orbiter/payload data and communications interface was examined. It was found that the Configuration Control Board Directive (CCBD) greatly increases the capability of the orbiter to communicate with a wide variety of projected shuttle payloads. Rather than being derived from individual payload communication requirements, the CCBD appears to be based on an operational philosophy that requires the orbiter to duplicate or augment the ground network/payload communication links. It is suggested that the implementation of the CCBD be reviewed and compared with the Level 1 Program Requirements Document, differences reconciled, and interface characteristics defined.

Orbiter altitude at ALT interface based on ALSES (Approach and Landing Shuttle Engineering Simulation) analyses. Mission planning, mission analysis and software formulation

The details of the orbiter altitude attainable at the approach and landing tests (ALT) interface determined by the approach and landing shuttle engineering simulation (manned) were documented. The analysis culminated in the verification of the trends observed in a similar analysis performed previously on the space vehicle dynamics simulation (unmanned). Altitude variations attributable to pilot steering variability ranged between 492 ft higher to 383 ft lower. The requirement for this parametric analysis is first elaborated. The specifications, assumptions, and analytical approach used to determine the orbiter altitude at the ALT interface are then presented, followed by the results of the analytical approach and the conclusions and recommendations.

Space shuttle engineering and operations support. Orbiter to spacelab electrical power interface. Avionics system engineering

The results are presented of an investigation of the factors which affect the determination of Spacelab (S/L) minimum interface main dc voltage and available power from the orbiter. The dedicated fuel cell mode of powering the S/L is examined along with the minimum S/L interface voltage and available power using the predicted fuel cell power plant performance curves. The values obtained are slightly lower than current estimates and represent a more marginal operating condition than previously estimated.

Electromagnetic reflection and transmission at interfaces involving graded dielectrics with applications to planetary radar astronomy

Reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves at an interface between two homogeneous materials is modified when a transition zone of linearly increasing permittivity is inserted between the half spaces. Mathematical expressions for reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for waves at arbitrary incidence angles and polarized either in or perpendicular to the plane of incidence. Discontinuities in permittivity at the transition-zone boundaries are allowed. There is efficient transmission between the two half-spaces for transition-zone thicknesses of a wavelength or greater. For sharper changes, the matching layer has diminishing effect and the wave-interface interaction is characterized by the difference in properties between the two half-spaces. Examples applicable to lunar radar astronomy and airborne terrestrial remote sensing are used to illustrate the relationship between wavelength and thickness of the transition layer.

Software handlers for process interfaces

The principles involved in the development of software handlers for custom interfacing problems are discussed. Handlers for the CAMAC standard are examined in detail. The types of transactions that must be supported have been established by standards groups, eliminating conflicting requirements arising out of different design philosophies and applications. Implementation of the standard handlers has been facilititated by standardization of hardware. The necessary local processors can be placed in the handler when it is written or at run time by means of input/output directives, or they can be built into a high-performance input/output processor. The full benefits of these process interfaces will only be realized when software requirements are incorporated uniformly into the hardware.

Viscosity and viscoelasticity of two-phase systems having diffuse interfaces

The equilibrium stability criterion for diffuse interfaces in a two-component solution with a miscibility gap requires that the interdiffusion flux vanish. If the system is continuously deformed, convective fluxes disrupt the equilibrium in the interface regions and induce a counter diffusive flux, which is dissipative and contributes to the apparent viscosity of the mixture. Chemical free energy is recoverably stored, causing viscoelastic phenomena. Both effects are significant.

Interface standards for computer equipment

The ability to configure data systems using modules provided by independent manufacturers is complicated by the wide range of electrical, mechanical, and functional characteristics exhibited within the equipment provided by different manufacturers of computers, peripherals, and terminal devices. A number of international organizations were and still are involved in the creation of standards that enable devices to be interconnected with minimal difficulty, usually involving only a cable or data bus connection that is defined by the standard. The elements covered by an interface standard are covered and the most prominent interface standards presently in use are identified and described.

Quantitative determination of zero-gravity effects on electronic materials processing germanium crystal growth with simultaneous interface demarcation. Experiment MA-060

Experiment MA-060 was designed to establish the crystal growth and segregation characteristics of a melt in a directional solidification configuration under near zero-g conditions. The interface demarcation technique was incorporated into the experiment since it constitutes a unique tool for recording the morphology of the growth rate throughout solidification, and for establishing an absolute time reference framework for all stages of the solidification process. An extensive study was performed of the germanium crystals grown during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission. It was found that single crystal growth was achieved and that the interface demarcation functioned successfully. There was no indication that convection driven by thermal or surface tension gradients was present in the melt. The gallium segregation, in the absence of gravity, was found to be fundamentally different in its initial and its subsequent stages from that of the ground-based tests. None of the existing theoretical models for growth and segregation can account for the observed segregation behavior in the absence of gravity.

A PDP-15 to industrial-14 interface at the Lewis Research Center's cyclotron

An interface (hardware and software) was built which permits the loading, monitoring, and control of a digital equipment industrial-14/30 programmable controller by a PDP-15 computer. The interface utilizes the serial mode for data transfer to and from the controller, so that the required hardware is essentially that of a teletype unit except for the speed of transmission. Software described here permits the user to load binary paper tape, read or load individual controller memory locations, and if desired turn controller outputs on and off directly from the computer.

Sodium ions at defect sites at SiO2/Si interfaces as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is described in its application as a probe for studying defects such as sodium in SiO2 films. A general description is given of key experimental methods in XPS. Techniques are described for applying and monitoring a fixed bias at the surface of the oxide during the XPS measurement. These methods are shown to be capable of detecting extremely small Na and Cu concentrations in undoped samples (less than 10 to the 11th power per cu cm). In deliberately Na-doped samples, five spectral peaks are distinctly observed and related to different defect states at the vacuum/SiO2 and SiO2/Si interfaces. By applying a bias-temperature stress during the XPS measurements, these peaks change in relative intensity and can be related to the motion of the Na(+) ions between different states occurring at the two interfaces. An attempt is made to correlate the observations with previously reported models.
