Biosequence-based approach to analyzing binaries

In a dynamic computing environment, it is a nontrivial task to verify code running in the environment because most approaches to software similarity require extensive and time-consuming analysis of a binary, or the approaches fail to recognize executables that are similar but nonidentical. A biosequence-based method for quantifying similarity of executable binaries is used to identify allowed codes in a real-world multi-user environment.

Highly portable radial differential mobility analyzer

The present disclosure describes a compact and lightweight, radial-flow DMA designed to operate at low aerosol and sheath flowrates (on the order of 0.3 L/min aerosol flow, and 0.6-1.2 L/min sheath flow) and so as to classify aerosols including particles having sizes in the 10-500 nm range. Thus, the DMA is capable of operating at relatively low resolution (RND=2-4) to minimize both instrument volume and pumping/power requirements, while enabling size distribution measurement with the precision required for desired applications.

A Sub-Threshold Low-Power Integrated Bandpass Filter for Highly-Integrated Spectrum Analyzers

Low-power analog filter banks provide frequency analysis with minimal power and space requirements, making them viable solutions for integrated remote audio- and vibration-sensing applications. Compared with their digital counterparts, analog filter banks are better suited to achieve the lower power consumption necessary for IoT applications, while maintaining high dynamic range and a wide operational frequency range. In this work, the design and implementation of a sub-threshold complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated low-power tunable analog filter channel for signal spectrum analysis and signal discrimination is presented. Project specifications required a programmable, high-order, monolithic bandpass filter channel with small chip area, low power consumption, high dynamic range, and wide operational frequency range. The 8th-order filter channel presented in this work provides an effective Q-factor of 4.5 and a minimum dynamic range (DR) of approximately 85 dB, while allowing for tuning across a range of center frequencies from 2 kHz to 100 kHz, with power consumption of a single 8th-order filter channel measured at 256 µW nominally at the highest center frequency. An integrated analog Gm-C filter topology was selected for this application. Functionally, the high-Q bandpass filter transfer function is implemented via four cascaded 2nd-order filter cells, resulting in a single 8th-order filter channel, fabricated in 130-nm 1.2-V CMOS technology, suitable for use in monolithic integrated spectral analysis (MISA1) applications.

Analyzing the Economic and Technical Potential of H2@Scale

H2@Scale is one of EERE's flagship initiatives to enable clean and affordable hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and utilization across multiple sectors in the economy. The January H2IQ hour will discuss results from a recent multi-laboratory analysis report quantifying the technical and economic potential of H2@Scale, given the use of hydrogen as an energy intermediate to integrate sectors in the U.S. energy system. Mark Ruth of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the lead author of the report, will discuss specific examples of the role hydrogen can play in industry and transportation sectors, such as steelmaking, synthetic fuels, and blending into natural gas pipelines. He will also explain how hydrogen production can be integrated with the electric grid to monetize low-cost energy and incentivize growth in renewable energy supply. The H2IQ Hour will dive into estimates for future hydrogen consumption in current and emerging sectors, given R&D advances and varying prices of natural gas and electricity.

In this work, the design and implementation of a sub-threshold complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated low-power tunable bandpass filter channel for signal spectrum analysis and signal discrimination is presented, including performance improvements to stability and precise matching between filter stages. The 8 th -order filter channel achieves an effective Q-factor of 4.5 and dynamic range of 60 dB, has an operational frequency range from 2 kHz to 100 kHz, and consumes 256 µW nominally at the highest center frequency. An integrated analog Gm-C filter topology is selected for this application. Functionally, the high-Q bandpass filter transfer function is implemented via four cascaded 2 nd -order filter cells and is fabricated in 130-nm 1.2-V CMOS technology, making it suitable for use in monolithic integrated spectral analysis (MISA) applications.

Modeling Distributed Energy Resources for Analyzing Distribution Systems with High Renewable Penetration: Preprint

Increasing levels of inverter-based distributed energy resources (IBDERs) impact the legacy overcurrent distribution protection systems. The fault current injections of IBDERs are limited to between 1-2 p.u. of the rated current. The combination of the limited fault current and varying system load makes it increasingly difficult to reliably set the overcurrent protection. To address this challenge, researchers are proposing adaptive overcurrent protection mechanisms that can adapt to changing system conditions. Accurate modeling of IBDERs is required to develop reliable protection schemes. This paper presents a photovoltaics-based IBDER model in OpenDSS for adaptive overcurrent protection. The paper presents the validation of the proposed IBDER model against a detailed model in electromagnetic transient programs. Protection analysis of the Electric Power Research Institute J1 feeder with the proposed IBDER model is also presented.
