Semicustom integrated circuits and the standard transistor array radix (STAR)

The development, application, pros and cons of the semicustom and custom approach to the integration of circuits are described. Improvements in terms of cost, reliability, secrecy, power, and size reduction are examined. Also presented is the standard transistor array radix, a semicustom approach to digital integrated circuits that offers the advantages of both custom and semicustom approaches to integration.

Hydrogen maser frequency standards for the Deep Space Network

A field operable maser has been developed for use in the Deep Space Network. Maser design was based on two experimental hydrogen maser frequency standards in operation since 1970 at DSN stations. Many design changes have been incorporated into the maser design, both in physics and electronics systems. Short and long term frequency, RF isolation of maser output lines and the lifetime of active physics components have been improved. Automatic fault detection and location, and performance and reliability of the receiver-synthesizer system have also been altered.

Development of a standardized control module for dc-to-dc converters

The electrical performance of a power processor depends on the quality of its control system. Most of the existing control circuits suffer one or more of the following imperfections that tend to restrict their respective utility: (1) inability to perform different modes of duty cycle control; (2) lack of immunity to output filter parameter changes, and (3) lack of capability to provide power component stress limiting on an instantaneous basis. The three lagging aspects of existing control circuits have been used to define the major objectives of the current Standardized Control Module (SCM) Program. Detailed information on the SCM functional block diagram, its universality, and performance features, circuit description, test results, and modeling and analysis efforts are presented.

NASA atomic hydrogen standards program - An update

Some of the design features of NASA hydrogen masers are discussed including the large hydrogen source bulb, the palladium purified, the state selector, the replaceable pumps, the small entrance stem, magnetic shields, the elongated storage bulb, the aluminum cavity, the electronics package, and the autotuner. Attention is also given to the reliability and operating life of these hydrogen atomic standards.

Diurnal rhythms of visual accommodation and blink responses - Implication for flight-deck visual standards

Possible 24-h variations in accommodation responses were investigated. A recently developed servo-controlled optometer and focus stimulator were used to obtain monocular accommodation response data on four college-age subjects. No 24-h rhythm in accommodation was shown. Heart rate and blink rate also were measured and periodicity analysis showed a mean 24-h rhythm for both; however, blink rate periodograms were significant for only two of the four subjects. Thus, with the qualifications that college students were tested instead of pilots and that they performed monocular laboratory tasks instead of binocular flight-deck tasks, it is concluded that 24-h rhythms in accommodation responses need not be considered in setting visual standards for flight-deck tasks.

Developments in fracture mechanics test methods standardization; Proceedings of the Symposium, St. Louis, Mo., May 4, 1976

Experience in plane-strain fracture toughness testing per ASTM Method E 399 is considered along with fracture toughness testing using the C-shaped specimen, an analysis of radially cracked ring segments subject to forces and couples, compliance calibration of specimens used in the R-curve practice, heavy-section fracture toughness screening specimen, and sharply notched cylindrical tension specimens for screening plane-strain fracture toughness. Attention is also given to an investigation of some problems in developing standards for precracked Charpy specimen strength ratios, fracture testing with surface crack specimens, and the estimation of plane strain fracture toughness values from slow bend precracked Charpy specimen strength ratios.

Investigation of some problems in developing standards for precracked Charpy slow bend tests

The reported investigation was undertaken in connection with an attempt to develop procedures which would be useful in standardizing a test method for the precracked Charpy slow bend specimen. A number of alloys was studied for which valid plane-strain fracture toughness values have been established. The investigation shows that useful relations between precracked Charpy slow bend results and crack size factors can be obtained under some circumstances. However, it is not yet known what factors control these circumstances.

Hydrogen-maser frequency standard

Wall shift in frequency of proposed variable-shift maser that is caused by collisions between hydrogen atoms and container walls, could easily be determined, thereby allowing building of frequency standard with accuracy of 1 part in 10 to 14th power.

Standardization of computational experiments in unsteady turbulent boundary-layer flow

Numerical experiments are proposed as standard cases to be computed by all who plan to analyze unsteady turbulent boundary layer behavior. In this way, differences between the results obtained by various methods can be compared in a completely defined environment. The test cases range in difficulty from time relaxation study of the steady flow on a flat plate to the analysis of unsteady reversed flow. Initial and boundary conditions are fully defined for each case and representative outputs are presented. It is recommended that tabulated samples of computations of these test cases be published in a compendium of results.

Standard high-reliability integrated circuit logic packaging

A family of standard, high-reliability hardware used for packaging digital integrated circuits is described. The design transition from early prototypes to production hardware is covered and future plans are discussed. Interconnections techniques are described as well as connectors and related hardware available at both the microcircuit packaging and main-frame level. General applications information is also provided.
