All‐Polymer Bulk‐Heterojunction Organic Electrochemical Transistors with Balanced Ionic and Electronic Transport

Abstract The rapid development of organic electrochemical transistor (OECTs)‐based circuits brings new opportunities for next‐generation integrated bioelectronics. The all‐polymer bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) offers an attractive, inexpensive alternative to achieve efficient ambipolar OECTs, and building blocks of logic circuits constructed from them, but have not been investigated to date. Here, the first all‐polymer BHJ‐based OECTs are reported, consisting of a blend of new p‐type ladder conjugated polymer and a state‐of‐the‐art n‐type ladder polymer. The whole ladder‐type polymer BHJ also proves that side chains are not necessary for good ion transport. Instead, the polymer nanostructures play a critical role in the ion penetration and transportation and thus in the device performance. It also provides a facile strategy and simplifies the fabrication process, forgoing the need to pattern multiple active layers. In addition, the development of complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)‐like OECTs allows the pursuit of advanced functional logic circuitry, including inverters and NAND gates, as well as for amplifying electrophysiology signals. This work opens a new approach to the design of new materials for OECTs and will contribute to the development of organic heterojunctions for ambipolar OECTs toward high‐performing logic circuits.

Stable Cuprous Hydroxide Nanostructures by Organic Ligand Functionalization

Abstract Copper compounds have been extensively investigated for diverse applications. However, studies of cuprous hydroxide (CuOH) have been scarce due to structural metastability. Herein, a facile, wet‐chemistry procedure is reported for the preparation of stable CuOH nanostructures via deliberate functionalization with select organic ligands, such as acetylene and mercapto derivatives. The resulting nanostructures are found to exhibit a nanoribbon morphology consisting of small nanocrystals embedded within a largely amorphous nanosheet‐like scaffold. The acetylene derivatives are found to anchor onto the CuOH forming CuC linkages, whereas CuS interfacial bonds are formed with the mercapto ligands. Effective electronic coupling occurs at the ligand‐core interface in the former, in contrast to mostly non‐conjugated interfacial bonds in the latter, as manifested in spectroscopic measurements and confirmed in theoretical studies based on first principles calculations. Notably, the acetylene‐capped CuOH nanostructures exhibit markedly enhanced photodynamic activity in the inhibition of bacteria growth, as compared to the mercapto‐capped counterparts due to a reduced material bandgap and effective photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species. Results from this study demonstrate that deliberate structural engineering with select organic ligands is an effective strategy in the stabilization and functionalization of CuOH nanostructures, a critical first step in exploring their diverse applications.

Broadband THz Modulation via Solid–State Organic Electrochemical Devices

The sub-Terahertz and Terahertz bands play a critical role in next-generation wireless communication and sensing technologies, thanks to the large amount of available bandwidth in this spectral regime. While long-wavelength (microwave to mm-Wave) and short-wavelength (near-infrared to ultraviolet) devices are well-established and studied, the sub-THz to THz regime remains relatively underexplored and underutilized. Traditional approaches used in the aforementioned spectral regions are more difficult to replicate in the THz band, leading to the need for the development of novel devices and structures that can manipulate THz radiation effectively. Herein a novel organic, solid-state electrochemical device is presented, capable of achieving modulation depths of over 90% from ≈500 nm of a conducting polymer that switches conductivity over a large dynamic range upon application of an electronically controllable external bias. The stability of such devices under long-term, repeated voltage switching, as well as continuous biasing at a single voltage, is also explored. Switching stabilities and long-term bias stabilities are achieved over two days for both use cases. Additionally, both depletion mode (always “ON”) and accumulation mode (always “OFF”) operation are demonstrated. These results suggest applications of organic electrochemical THz modulators in large area and flexible implementations.

Thiol‐Functionalized Conjugated Metal–Organic Frameworks for Stable and Efficient Perovskite Photovoltaics

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated recently in perovskite photovoltaics owing to their potential to boost optoelectronic performance and device stability. However, the impact of variations in the MOF side chain on perovskite characteristics and the mechanism of MOF/perovskite film formation remains unclear. In this study, three nanoscale thiol‐functionalized UiO‐66‐type Zr‐based MOFs (UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 , UiO‐66‐MSA, and UiO‐66‐DMSA) are systematically employed and examined in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among these MOFs, UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 , with its rigid organic ligands, exhibited a strong interaction with perovskite materials with more efficient suppression of perovskite vacancy defects. More importantly, A detailed and in‐depth discussion is provided on the formation mechanism of UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 ‐assisted perovskite film upon in situ GIWAXS performed during the annealing process. The incorporation of UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 additives substantially facilitates the conversion of PbI 2 into the perovskite phase, prolongs the duration of stage I, and induces a delayed phase transformation pathway. Consequently, the UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 ‐assisted device demonstrates reduced defect density and superior optoelectronic properties with optimized power conversion efficiency of 24.09% and enhanced long‐term stability under ambient environment and continuous light illumination conditions. This study acts as a helpful design guide for desired MOF/perovskite structures, enabling further advancements in MOF/perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Reduced Stochastic Resistive Switching in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Memristors by Vapor-Phase Infiltration

We report resistive random-access memory (RRAM) is promising for next-generation data storage and non-von Neumann computing hardware. However, tuning device switching characteristics and particularly, controlling their stochastic variation remain as critical challenges. Here, new organic-inorganic hybrid RRAM media are reported whose bipolar switching characteristics and stochasticity can be controlled by vapor-phase infiltration (VPI), an ex situ hybridization technique derived from atomic layer deposition. Hybrid RRAMs based on AlO x -infiltrated SU-8 feature facile tunability of device switching voltages, off-state current, and on-off ratio by adjusting the amount of infiltrated AlO x in the hybrid. Furthermore, a significant reduction in the stochastic, cycle-to-cycle variations of switching parameters is enabled by AlO x infiltration, driven by the infiltration-induced changes in mechanical, dielectric, and chemical properties of organic medium and their influence on the dimension and formation characteristics of conductive filaments. Finally, multi-level analog switching potentially useful for neuromorphic applications are demonstrated, along with direct, one-step device patterning exploiting the negative-tone resist feature of SU-8. With the demonstrated control over switching characteristics and stochastic variation, combined with analog switching and one-step patterning capabilities, the results not only present a novel hybrid medium for RRAM applications but also showcase the utility of VPI for developing new, high-performance hybrid RRAM devices.

Achieving Balanced Crystallization Kinetics of Donor and Acceptor by Sequential-Blade Coated Double Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells

Sequential deposition has great potential to achieve high performance in organic solar cells due to the resulting well-controlled vertical phase separation. In this work, double bulk heterojunction organic solar cells are fabricated by sequential-blade cast in ambient conditions. Probed by the in situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and in situ UV–vis absorption measurements, the seq-blade system exhibits a different tendency from each of the binary films during the film formation process. Due to the extensive aggregation of FOIC, the binary PBDB-T:FOIC film displays a strong and large phase separation, resulting in low current density (J sc) and unsatisfactory power conversion efficiency. In the seq-blade cast system, the bottom layer PBDB-T:IT-M produces many crystal nuclei for the top layer PBDB-T:FOIC, so the PBDB-T molecules are able to crystallize easily and quickly. Balanced crystallization kinetics between polymer and small molecule and an ideal percolation network in the film are observed. In addition, the balanced crystallization kinetics are favorable toward realizing lower recombination loss through charge transport processes.

Twisted A-D-A Type Acceptors with Thermally-Activated Delayed Crystallization Behavior for Efficient Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

We report that molecular aggregation and crystallization during film coating play a crucial role in the realization of high-performing organic photovoltaics. Strong intermolecular interactions and high solid-state crystallinity are beneficial for charge transport. However, fast crystallization during thin-film drying often limits the formation of the finely phase-separated morphology required for efficient charge generation. Herein, the authors show that twisted acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type compounds, containing an indacenodithiophene (IDT) electron-rich core and two naphthalenediimide (NDI) electron-poor units, leads to formation of mostly amorphous phases in the as-cast film, which can be readily converted into more crystalline domains by means of thermal annealing. This design strategy solves the aforementioned conundrum, leading to an optimal morphology in terms of reduced donor/acceptor domain-separation sizes (ca. 13 nm) and increased packing order. Solar cells based on these acceptors with a PBDB-T polymer donor show a power conversion efficiency over 10% and stable morphology, which results from the combined properties of desirable excited-state dynamics, high charge mobility, and optimal aggregation/crystallization characteristics. These results demonstrate that the twisted A-D-A motif featuring thermally-induced crystallization behavior is indeed a promising alternative design approach toward more morphologically robust materials for efficient organic photovoltaics.

Synergetic Effect of Aluminum Oxide and Organic Halide Salts on Two‐Dimensional Perovskite Layer Formation and Stability Enhancement of Perovskite Solar Cells

Long-chain organic halide salts are widely used in perovskite-based optoelectronic devices for surface passivation owing to their capability to interact with the surface defects of perovskites. Here, aluminum oxide (AlO x ) is introduced via atomic layer deposition onto octylammonium iodide (OAI) to exploit the benefits of organic halide salts without generating undesired defects. The devices incorporating AlO x on OAI-treated perovskite (OAI/AlO x ) show enhancement in both device performance and photo-stability compared to those with only treatment. A diffusion of aluminum from AlO x into the perovskite through surface characterization contributes to a uniform photo-generated carrier transport in both the surface and the bulk of the perovskite absorber. In addition, it is revealed that light-induced two-dimensional perovskite formation on OAI/AlO x . This may be ascribed to preventing the loss of OA cations due to the presence of AlO x , leading to a decrease in the number of iodine anions which suppresses the light-induced degradation of corresponding devices. Consequently, the devices show over 24% efficiency and retain their efficiency over 1000 hours under continuous light illumination.

Mean Field Theory of Self‐Organizing Memristive Connectomes

Abstract Biological neuronal networks are characterized by nonlinear interactions and complex connectivity. Given the growing impetus to build neuromorphic computers, understanding physical devices that exhibit structures and functionalities similar to biological neural networks is an important step toward this goal. Self‐organizing circuits of nanodevices are at the forefront of the research in neuromorphic computing, as their behavior mimics synaptic plasticity features of biological neuronal circuits. However, an effective theory to describe their behavior is lacking. This study provides for the first time an effective mean field theory for the emergent voltage‐induced polymorphism of circuits of a nanowire connectome, showing that the behavior of these circuits can be explained by a low‐dimensional dynamical equation. The equation can be derived from the microscopic dynamics of a single memristive junction in analytical form. The effective model is tested on experiments of nanowire networks and show that it fits both the potentiation and depression of these synapse‐mimicking circuits. It is shown that this theory applies beyond the case of nanowire networks by formulating a general mean‐field theory of conductance transitions in self‐organizing memristive connectomes.

A Metal‐Organic Framework (MOF)‐Based Multifunctional Cargo Vehicle for Reactive‐Gas Delivery and Catalysis

Abstract The efficient delivery of reactive and toxic gaseous reagents to organic reactions was studied using metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs). The simultaneous cargo vehicle and catalytic capabilities of several MOFs were probed for the first time using the examples of aromatization, aminocarbonylation, and carbonylative Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reactions. These reactions highlight that MOFs can serve a dual role as a gas cargo vehicle and a catalyst, leading to product formation with yields similar to reactions employing pure gases. Furthermore, the MOFs can be recycled without sacrificing product yield, while simultaneously maintaining crystallinity. The reported findings were supported crystallographically and spectroscopically (e.g., diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy), foreshadowing a pathway for the development of multifunctional MOF‐based reagent‐catalyst cargo vessels for reactive gas reagents as an attractive alternative to the use of toxic pure gases or gas generators.

Beyond Solvothermal: Alternative Synthetic Methods for Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous organic materials that hold a wealth of potential applications across various fields. The development of COFs, however, is significantly impeded by the dearth of efficient synthetic methods. The traditional solvothermal approach, while prevalent, is fraught with challenges such as complicated processes, excessive energy consumption, long reaction times, and limited scalability, rendering it unsuitable for practical applications. The quest for simpler, quicker, more energy‐efficient, and environmentally benign synthetic strategies is thus paramount for bridging the gap between academic COF chemistry and industrial application. This Review provides an overview of the recent advances in alternative COF synthetic methods, with a particular emphasis on energy input. We discuss representative examples of COF synthesis facilitated by microwave, ultrasound, mechanic force, light, plasma, electric field, and electron beam. Perspectives on the advantages and limitations of these methods against the traditional solvothermal approach are highlighted.

Mixed‐Valence Cu I /Cu III Metal–Organic Frameworks with Non‐innocent Ligand for Multielectron Transfer

Abstract We report two novel three‐dimensional copper‐benzoquinoid metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cu 4 L 3 ] n and [Cu 4 L 3 ⋅ Cu(iq) 3 ] n (LH 4 =1,4‐dicyano‐2,3,5,6‐tetrahydroxybenzene, iq=isoquinoline). Spectroscopic techniques and computational studies reveal the unprecedented mixed valency in MOFs, formal Cu(I)/Cu(III). This is the first time that formally Cu(III) species are witnessed in metal–organic extended solids. The coordination between the mixed‐valence metal and redox‐non‐innocent ligand L, which promotes through‐bond charge transfer between Cu metal sites, allows better metal‐ligand orbital overlap of the d‐π conjugation, leading to strong long‐range delocalization and semiconducting behavior. Our findings highlight the significance of the unique mixed valency between formal Cu(I) and highly‐covalent Cu(III), non‐innocent ligand, and pore environments of these bench stable Cu(III)‐containing frameworks on multielectron transfer and electrochemical properties.

Self‐Standing Chiral Covalent Organic Framework Thin Films with Full‐Color Tunable Guest‐Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract Exploring self‐standing chiral covalent organic framework (COF) thin films with controllable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is of paramount significance but remains a challenging task. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of self‐standing chiral COF films employing a polymerization‐dispersion‐filtration strategy. Pristine, low‐quality chiral COF films were produced by interfacial polymerization and then re‐dispersed into COF colloidal solutions. Via vacuum assisted assembly, these COF colloids were densely stacked and assembled into self‐standing, pure chiral COF films ( L‐ / D‐ CCOF‐F) that were transparent, smooth, crack‐free and highly crystalline. These films were tunable in thicknesses, areas, and roughness, along with strong diffuse reflectance circular dichroism (DRCD) and cyan CPL signals, showing an intrinsic luminescence asymmetric factor ( g lum ) of ~4.3×10 −3 . Furthermore, these COF films served as host adsorbents to load various achiral organic dye guests through adsorption. The effective chiral transfer and energy transfer between CCOF‐F and achiral fluorescent dyes endowed the dyes with strong chirality and tunable DRCD, resulting in intense, full‐color‐tunable solid‐state CPL. Notably, the ordered arrangement of dye guest molecules within the preferentially oriented chiral pores of CCOF‐F contributed to an amplified | g lum | factor of up to 7.2×10 −2 , which is state‐of‐the‐art for COF‐based CPL materials. This work provides new insights into the design and fabrication of self‐standing chiral COF films, demonstrating their great potential for chiroptical applications.

Antiferromagnetic Ordering in A One‐Dimensional Organic Copper Chloride Hybrid Insulator

Abstract Low dimensional (LD) organic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) have recently emerged as new generation functional materials with exceptional structural and property tunability. Despite the remarkable advances in the development of LD OMHHs, optical properties have been the major functionality extensively investigated for most of LD OMHHs developed to date, while other properties, such as magnetic and electronic properties, remain significantly under‐explored. Here, we report for the first time the characterization of the magnetic and electronic properties of a 1D OMHH, organic‐copper (II) chloride hybrid (C 8 H 22 N 2 )Cu 2 Cl 6 . Owing to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu atoms through chloride bridges in 1D [Cu 2 Cl 6 2− ] ∞ chains, (C 8 H 22 N 2 )Cu 2 Cl 6 is found to exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 24 K. The two‐terminal (2T) electrical measurement on a (C 8 H 22 N 2 )Cu 2 Cl 6 single crystal reveals its insulating nature. This work shows the potential of LD OMHHs as a highly tunable quantum material platform for spintronics.

Three-dimensional Polymers as Organic Cathodes for Affordable and Sustainable Sodium/Potassium-ion Batteries

Redox-active polymers (RAPs) are promising organic electrode materials for affordable and sustainable batteries due to their flexible chemical structures and negligible solubility in the electrolyte. Developing high-dimensional RAPs with porous structures and crosslinkers can further improve their stability and redox capability by reducing the solubility and enhancing reaction kinetics. Further, this work reports two three-dimensional (3D) RAPs as stable organic cathodes in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) and K-ion batteries (KIBs). Carbonyl functional groups are incorporated into the repeating units of the RAPs by the polycondensation of Tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane and two different dianhydrides. The RAPs with interconnected 3D extended conjugation structures undergo multi-electron redox reactions and exhibit high performance in both NIBs and KIBs in terms of long cycle life (up to 8000 cycles) and fast charging capability (up to 2 A g -1 ). The results demonstrate that developing 3D RAPs is an effective strategy to achieve high-performance, affordable, and sustainable NIBs and KIBs.

Domesticating a food spoilage yeast into an organic acid–tolerant metabolic engineering host: Lactic acid production by engineered Zygosaccharomyces bailii

Lactic acid represents an important class of commodity chemicals, which can be produced by microbial cell factories. However, due to the toxicity of lactic acid at lower pH, microbial production requires the usage of neutralizing agents to maintain neutral pH. Zygosaccharomyces bailii, a food spoilage yeast, can grow under the presence of organic acids used as food preservatives. This unique trait of the yeast might be useful for producing lactic acid. With the goal of domesticating the organic acid!tolerant yeast as a metabolic engineering host, seven Z. bailii strains were screened in a minimal medium with 10 g/L of acetic, or 60 g/L of lactic acid at pH 3. The Z. bailii NRRL Y7239 strain was selected as the most robust strain to be en- gineered for lactic acid production. By applying a PAN!ARS!based CRISPR!Cas9 system consisting of a transfer RNA promoter and NAT selection, we demonstrated the targeted deletion of ADE2 and site!specific integration of Rhizopus oryzae ldhA coding for lactate dehydrogenase into the PDC1 locus. The resulting pdc1::ldhA strain produced 35 g/L of lactic acid without ethanol production. Here, this study de- monstrates the feasibility of the CRISPR!Cas9 system in Z. bailii, which can be applied for a fundamental study of the species.
