Production, Characterization and Bioemulsifying Activity of an Exopolysaccharide Produced by Sphingomonas sp. Isolated from Freshwater

This study aimed to evaluate the emulsion stability of solutions containing exopolysaccharide and culture medium of a Sphingomonas sp. strain with various hydrophobic compounds. The exopolysaccharide characterized belongs to a sphingan group, however, not being a gellan gum as produced by certain Sphingomonas strains. In general, the emulsifying indexes found in this study were above 70% for gasoline, hexane, kerosene and used frying oil. Nonetheless, the best results were achieved in kerosene solutions, which showed an index of 80% after 24 h, remaining stable for more than 168 h in combinations with various EPS concentrations. Interestingly, diesel oil best results were singly achieved in solution pH of 11, showing an index of around 65%. Furthermore, hexane obtained an index of 100% after 24 h when culture medium was used. Thus, these findings highlight the use of EPS as a potential bioemulsifier agent to enhance hydrocarbon degradation and emulsification effects in environmental biotechnology.

Isolation and Characterization of Cellulose Micro/Nanofibrils from Douglas Fir

Cellulose micro/nanofibrils were successfully extracted from softwood Douglas fir in three distinct stages. Initially raw Douglas fir wood chips were subjected to a hot water extraction (HWE) treatment. Then HWE treated cellulosic fibers underwent a bleaching process followed by a mild ultrasonication. Chemical composition analysis according to ASTM standards confirmed that most of hemicelluloses and nearly all lignin were removed during the first two stages, respectively. Microscopy studies showed formation of nanofibrils during the ultrasonication process, and increasing ultrasonication time led to generation of greater percentage of nanofibrils. With the removal of the matrix materials, the crystallinity of the cellulosic fibers was increased, whereas thermal stability was maintained. HWE opened up the cell wall structure, thereby facilitating the subsequent fractionation into micro/nanofibrils. The obtained cellulose micro/nanofibrils could serve as reinforcing material in composite products or raw material for other applications, such as filtration membrane.

Elliptic G-Operators on Manifolds with Isolated Singularities

In the present work we study elliptic operators on manifolds with singularities in the situation where the manifold is endowed with an action of a discrete group G. As usual in elliptic theory, the Fredholm property of an operator is governed by the properties of its principal symbol. We show that the principal symbol in our situation is a pair consisting of the symbol on the main stratum (interior symbol) and the symbol at the conical point (conormal symbol). The Fredholm property of elliptic elements is obtained.

Irradiation and isolation of fission products from uranium metal–organic frameworks

Typical fission product formation experiments utilize metal or oxide target materials that must be dissolved prior to product separation. In this study, we report here a novel study using metal–organic frameworks for recovery of fission products into acidic media. We further show that the frameworks are largely preserved, such that this bulk target material could be retained for additional irradiations or characterizations. Through this approach, fission products can be separated from the actinide-based metal–organic framework using 0.01 M HNO 3 without the need to dissolve the framework itself, reducing the amount of acidic waste. Extraction yields of four frameworks with varying pore sizes are compared. In conclusion, the results suggest that it may be possible to use porous frameworks as target materials for the extraction of select fission products.

Using In Situ Neutron Diffraction to Isolate Specific Features of Additively Manufactured Microstructures in 304L Stainless Steel and Identify Their Effects on Macroscopic Strength

Additive manufacturing of metal components results in unique microstructures with, necessarily, mechanical properties that are distinct from conventionally produced components. In this paper, four distinct microstructural features associated with directed energy deposition of 304L stainless steels, their stability, and their influences on flow strength were examined. These were (1) high dislocation density comparable with deformed materials, (2) increased ferrite content, (3) local chemical heterogeneity, and (4) tortuous grain morphology. In situ neutron diffraction measurements were used to monitor the evolution of the as-built microstructure during post-build heat treatment and relate the specific microstructural features to the strength behavior of the material following the heat treatment. The increased flow strength of the additively manufactured material relative to wrought counterparts is found to be due primarily to an increased dislocation density in the as-built material. However, the increased dislocation density does not completely account for the increased strength and it is hypothesized that some of the additional strength is related to the unique AM grain structure.

Isolated cardiac amyloidosis. Utility of bone seeking tracers scintigraphy in differentiating the subtype of amyloid: A case report

Background: Three types of amyloid are responsible for cardiac amyloidosis. Differentiation of the subtype is critical for the disease progression and the therapeutic decision. Results: Myocardial scintigraphy using Tc-PYP is able to differentiate the cardiac amyloid subtype with high sensitivity and specificity. The myocardial uptake of PYP is higher in patients with TTR amyloidosis. Conclusion: Non-invasive tests for the detection of cardiac amyloidosis, like myocardial scintigraphy with bone seeking tracers, can play a major role in the diagnosis progression and therapeutic management of patients with cardiac amyloidosis.
