Combining analysis with optimization at Langley Research Center - An evolutionary process

Analytical and computational advances, at Langely Research Center (La RC), contributing to the evolution of computer programs combining analysis and optimization are presented, namely, strength sizing, concurrent strength and flutter sizing, and general optimization. Current work on a software system which executes the analysis and optimization in a sequential rather than concurrent mode is then described, as a step toward the long-term goal at La RC of developing the methodology for such systems. The software system is designated Enginering Analysis Language (EAL)/Programming Structural Synthesis System (PR)SSS), and work is being done on the incorporation of PROSSS into EAL. EAL language can perform most FORTRAN operations, including testing, branching, and looping, and its data base system can easily be accessed by any processor using FORTRAN callable utility subroutines. Some numerical results showing the accuracy of EAL/PROSSS are given.

Telemetry Modulation and Coping

Digital telemetry has supplanted analog telemetry for deep space communications. With digital telemetry, the telecommunications systems design engineer may use error correcting codes. This allows increased error protection at the cost of increased bandwidth. All science telemetry returned from the Voyager and Galileo spacecraft are protected by error correcting codes. Both the modulation and coding of digital telemetry for the deep space channel are considered. The descriptions include relative performance of some competing schemes. However, the treatment given here is, of necessity, cursory. A small class of modulation schemes has proven to be best for the deep space channel. The digital telemetry is either phase-shift-keyed onto a squarewave subcarrier and then phase modulated onto the carrier or the digital telemetry is directly phase modulated onto the carrier.

ADS-1 - A new general-purpose optimization program

Today, numerous programs are available which may be coupled with finite element analysis or other analysis techniques to perform the optimization function in the solution of structural synthesis problems. However, most of these codes include only one or two algorithms and many have not been tested on problems of significant size and complexity. There is, therefore, a need for a reliable, general-purpose, publicly available code, containing a variety of modern algorithms for use in structural synthesis as well as general engineering design. The ADS-1 program (Automated Design Synthesis: Version 1) was written in response to this need. The present investigation has the objective to present the capabilities of the ADS program and to demonstrate its application to structural synthesis. The ADS program solves the general nonlinear constrained optimization problem in the standard form. At each level of the optimization process, several options are available.

Propulsion issues for advanced orbit transfer vehicles

Studies of the United States Space Transportation System show that in the mid to late 1990s expanded capabilities for orbital transfer vehicles (OTV) will be needed to meet increased payload requirements for transporting materials and possibly men to geosynchronous orbit. Discussion and observations relative to the propulsion system issues of space basing, aeroassist compatibility, man ratability and enhanced payload delivery capability are presented. These issues will require resolution prior to the development of a propulsion system for the advanced OTV. The NASA program in support of advanced propulsion for an OTV is briefly described along with conceptual engine design characteristics.

Results of the Purdue University GAS-1 payload

The Purdue University GAS-1 payload was flown on STS-7. Results of the three experiments included in the payload are summarized. The experiments conducted were: (1) the detection of nuclear particles in near-Earth space environment, (2) an investigation of the effect of microgravity on the germination of sunflower seeds, and (3) an examination of the motion of mercury under low gravity conditions. Results of the payload experiments are discussed from an engineering design standpoint. Data were obtained from one of the experiments, but electrical and mechanical malfunctions prevented the operation of the other two. The thermal control design maintained the desired temperatures and the structure successfully supported all components. The microprocessor collected and stored temperature readings and other data during the flight. A series of recommendations based on these results are included herein.

Laboratory experience with voltage breakdown

Voltage breakdown failures in photovoltaic module electrical insulations lead to loss of entire source circuits and require costly maintenance and replacement. Avoiding such catastrophes requires that modules be designed so that voltage breakdown either never occurs or occurs so rarely that it affects the least life cycle energy costs insignificantly. To achieve this desired balance of cost and reliability, the module design engineer must understand the failure mechanisms and use data on materials and failue rates to suppress or retard them. Recently obtained failure mechanism information, rate data and materials property data and a qualitative model of module failure prediction are presented.
