Comparison of in situ measurements of forest decline symptoms in Vermont (USA) and the Schwarzwald (FRG)

Field analyses were conducted at spruce/fir sites in the U.S. and Germany undergoing forest decline. Data gathered from common branch samples included reflectance curves, fluorescence measurements, and pigment concentrations. Similar reflectance signatures are seen for specimens from all sites. Reflectance spectra from specimens collected from high damage sites in both countries show a characteristic reflectance drop in the near infrared and a shift (5 nm) of the red edge to shorter wavelengths. Fluorescence data suggest altered state of health of photosynthetic pigments only in specimens from German high damage sites, and pigment extraction and analysis indicate a reduction in total chlorophyll, a decrease in chlorophyll b when compared with chlorophyll a, and a relative increase in carotenoids.

Rock flows

Rock flows are defined as forms of spontaneous mass movements, commonly found in mountainous countries, which have been studied very little. The article considers formations known as rock rivers, rock flows, boulder flows, boulder stria, gravel flows, rock seas, and rubble seas. It describes their genesis as seen from their morphological characteristics and presents a classification of these forms. This classification is based on the difference in the genesis of the rubbly matter and characterizes these forms of mass movement according to their source, drainage, and deposit areas.

Transport models for numerical forecast

The explosive growth of computing power, coupled with scientific and technological emphasis on a national scale, has led to significant major advances in operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) during the last two decades. There are about half a dozen major centers around the world running global NWP models operationally. Many more countries have operational hemispheric or limited-area models which provide weather forecasts. The global models typically have several hundred kilometer resolution, while the limited-area models usually have horizontal spacing of 50 to 100 km. Given the pace of burgeoning growth in this area, it seems warranted to occasionally take an overview of aspects of the field common to all modelers. Here, a brief look is taken at the nature of subgrid scale turbulence transport parameterization, and some of the difficulties pertaining thereto, with particular emphasis on operational NWP models.

US tornadoes. Part 1: 70-year statistics

If tornadoes were counted as the Gross National Product, no other country on the surface of the earth could come even close to the United States. During the recent 70 year period, the United States produced 31,054 tornadoes which left behind a cumulative path of 132,005 miles (212,396 km) which would circle the world 5.3 times along the equator. In completing the book, staff members of the Satellite and Mesometeorlogy Research Project (1961 to the present) played an important role in collecting, evaluating, and archiving the historical tornado data.

The global tracking networks for crustal dynamics

Highly accurate Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) have been implemented by the NASA Crustal Dynamics Project and many cooperating groups in many countries to form global SLR and VLBI networks for geodetic measurements of global plate motion, plate deformation, regional deformations in areas of high earthquake activity, and accurate measurements of the earth's polar motion and changes in rotation rate. These systems are measuring vector baselines between stations to an accuracy of 2-5 cm. New improvements being implemented will improve the accuracy to about 1 cm.

Teacher in Space Program - The challenge to education in the space age

An account is given of the significant events which occurred in the Teacher in Space Program following the Challenger Space Shuttle accident on January 28, 1986. The analysis indicates that the accident has not prevented the continuing effective implementation of the three educational goals of the Teacher in Space Program which are to: (1) raise the prestige of the teaching profession, (2) increase the awareness in the education community of the impact of technology and science on this country's future in preparing students for the future, and (3) use aeronautics and space as a catalyst to enhance all subject areas and grade levels of U.S. education systems.

The international team

In view of the limited resources anticipated for the initial stages of the NASA Space Shuttle program, NASA planners have proposed a multinational partnership concept which will attempt to meet user requirements with minimum duplication of facilities and equipment. A major aspect of this concept is that the assignment of functions to as given country's laboratory module only implies that its subsystems will be tailored as necessary to the accommodation of such functions; the outfitting of the laboratory with research equipment will then be shared by all partners.

Bomber design trends

Some basic trends in bomber aircraft are traced from the pre-World War I era to the present time. The historic review includes bombers of many countries. The primary discussion, however, will be based on U.S. bomber programs and, to the extent possible, on USSR bomber programs. The bomber aircraft will be examined in terms of performance and mission capability.Characteristics will include power or thrust loading, wing loading, maximum speed, cruising speed, weight and weight distribution, and payload. These trends can be used to indicate the rationale for certain design types. Performance characteristics can be used to indicate potential mission objectives. The overall design trends should be useful in revealing the influence of mission objectives, the influence of advanced technology and, in turn, may be useful in predicting likely future trends.

Continental land cover assessment using Landsat MSS data

A statistical procedure to assess level-II continental resources using Landsat MSS digital data is presented. The statistical procedure involves a two-stage cluster sample within a stratified random sample. The utility of this procedure is assessed by using it to estimate the areal extent of the conifer and hardwood resources of the continental U.S. National estimates of conifer and hardwood derived using this sampling procedure were within 3 percent of U.S. Forest Service (USFS) figures. According to the Landsat-based study, 11 percent of the country is conifer forest and 12 percent is hardwood. The corresponding USFS figures are 13 and 15 percent, respectively. Comparison of the MSS classification products and airphotos showed that the conifer cover class was correctly identified 74 percent of the time and hardwood 80 percent of the time. The average classification accuracy countrywide for the four cover types considered (conifer, hardwood, water, and 'other') is 74 percent, and the overall accuracy is 85 percent. The statistical procedure provides a method of incorporating Landsat MSS digital data as a second state for level-II continental resource assessment. Alternate data sources, e.g., satellite and aircraft photographic imagery, may also be used in conjunction with this statistical model.
