SAMSI: An orbiting spatial interferometer for micro-arc second astronomical observations

The concept and performance of (SAMSI) Spacecraft Array for Michelson Spatial Interferometry, an orbiting spatial interferometer comprised of three free-flying spacecraft, two collector telescopes and a central mixing station are described. In the one-dimensional interferometry mode orbits exist which provide natural scanning of the baseline. These orbits place extremely small demands on thrusters and fuel consumption. Resolution of 0.00001 arcsecond and magnitude limits of mv = 15 to 20 are achievable in a single orbit. In the imaging mode, SAMSI could synthesize images equivalent to those produced by equal diameter filled apertures in space, making use of the fuel resupply capability of a space station. Simulations indicate that image reconstruction can be performed with milliarcsecond resolution to a visual magnitude 12 in 12 hr of spiral scanning integration time.

Software development to support sensor control of robot arc welding

The development of software for a Digital Equipment Corporation MINC-23 Laboratory Computer to provide functions of a workcell host computer for Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) robotic welding is documented. Routines were written to transfer robot programs between the MINC and an Advanced Robotic Cyro 750 welding robot. Other routines provide advanced program editing features while additional software allows communicatin with a remote computer aided design system. Access to special robot functions were provided to allow advanced control of weld seam tracking and process control for future development programs.

Auroral arc formation - Kinetic and MHD effects

Recent observations by the Dynamics Explorer satellites indicate that auroral field lines are not equipotentials. The field-aligned 'conductivity' is the same for up and downgoing currents and of the order of several 10 to the -8th to several 10 to the -9th/ohms sq m. This is not in agreement with models based on the resistance provided by the magnetic mirror force alone. It is suggested that the resistivity is due to damping of kinetic shear-Alfven wave packets. This damping may be nonlinear in nature or Landau damping. The properties of kinetic Alfven waves are reviewed.

An apparent gravitational lens with an image separation of 2.6 arc min

Observations are reported which confirm Paczynski's 1986 speculation that the previously known (Arp and Hazard, 1980) pair of 19th magnitude quasars 1146+111B,C are actually two images of a single object produced by a gravitational lens. The image split is 157 arcsec, more than 20 times greater than any previously reported, thus indicating an exceptionally massive lensing object. The data supporting the lens hypothesis are remarkably similar, high signal-to-noise, moderate resolution spectra of the two components. Both spectra show strong Mg II 2798-angstrom emission at z = 1.012 plus or minus 0.001 with indistinguishable redshifts (delta v = 126 plus or minus 309 km/s), widths (FWHM = 64 plus or minus 4 angstroms) and detailed profile shapes. Both spectra also show broad troughs at 6180 angstroms and several weaker continuum features. Neither object exhibits the O II 3727-A forbidden line which is frequently strong in Mg II emission objects. If the foreground galaxy clustering apparent in a deep R band charge-coupled device image proves insufficient to explain the large image splitting, other possibilities such as massive dark objects (e.g. a black hole of about 10 to the 15th solar masses) or a cosmic string may be indicated.

Precipitation factors leading to arc cloud formation

The combined efforts of three graduate students and the principal investigator are presented. Satellite observations and interpretation have become increasingly important in the areas of weather research and operational forecasting. One reason is that geostationary satellite imagery is the only meteorological observing tool that can follow the evolution of clouds from the synoptic scale down to the cumulas scale. Therefore, it can depict atmospheric activity which is up to two orders of magnitude smaller than can be resolved by conventional meteorological observations. This unique ability of the satellite provides the meteorologist a mechanism to infer weather events down to the mesoscale. This evolution is the subject of this report.

Sub-arc second 2 centimeter continuum and SiO spectral line observations of R Aquarii

VLA observations with a limiting spatial resolution of about 0.15 arcsec were attempted along with complementary observations of SiO emission using the three-element Hat Creek interferometer to determine an accurate position of the long-period variable (LPV) of the R Aquarii binary system. The observations indicate that the LPV wind is distorted by the photoionization of the hot campanion's accretion disk, that precession of the accretion disk may occur, and that the observed v = 1, J = 2-1 transition emanates from a circumbinary layer far removed from the position of the LPV itself.

Performance and lifetime assessment of MPD arc thruster technology

A summary of performance and lifetime characteristics of pulsed and steady-state magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters is presented. The technical focus is on cargo vehicle propulsion for exploration-class missions to the Moon and Mars. Relatively high MPD thruster efficiencies of 0.43 and 0.69 have been reported at about 5000 s specific impulse using hydrogen and lithium, respectively. Efficiencies of 0.10 to 0.35 in the 1000 to 4500 s specific impulse range have been obtained with other propellants (e.g., Ar, NH3, N2). Thermal efficiency data in excess of 0.80 at MW power levels using pulsed thrusters indicate the potential of high MPD thruster performance. Extended tests of pulsed and steady-state MPD thrusters yield total impulses at least two to three orders of magnitude below that necessary for cargo vehicle propulsion. Performance tests and diagnostics for life-limiting mechanisms of megawatt-class thrusters will require high fidelity test stands which handle in excess of 10 kA and a vacuum facility whose operational pressure is less than 3 x 10 to the -4 torr.

Servicing of spacecraft in the geostationary arc

The possibility of servicing geosynchronous spacecraft in connection with the development of the Space Station and its associated infrastructure is discussed. The proposed servicing infrastructure is presented as well as the design of a serviceable spacecraft, and a servicing scenario for a geostationary earth observation platform. The scenario employs the space based OTV, OMV, remote servicer and remote refueling system. It is shown that servicing geostationary spacecraft provides the largest economic benefit when performed on a scheduled basis.

High temperature electric arc furnace and method

An apparatus and process for improving the microstructure of electrically conducting materials is disclosed by the present invention. A revolving heat source applies heat to the surface of the material evenly and quickly. One or more heat sinks quickly cool the material. In the preferred embodiment, the cooling may be done in such a way as to promote as high a degree of directional grain growth as desired or completely nondirectional grain growth.

LEO high voltage solar array arcing response model, continuation 5

The modeling of the Debye Approximation electron sheaths in the edge and strip geometries was completed. Electrostatic potentials in these sheaths were compared to NASCAP/LEO solutions for similar geometries. Velocity fields, charge densities and particle fluxes to the biased surfaces were calculated for all cases. The major conclusion to be drawn from the comparisons of our Debye Approximation calculations with NASCAP-LEO output is that, where comparable biased structures can be defined and sufficient resolution obtained, these results are in general agreement. Numerical models for the Child-Langmuir, high-voltage electron sheaths in the edge and strip geometries were constructed. Electrostatic potentials were calculated for several cases in each of both geometries. Velocity fields and particle fluxes were calculated. The self-consistent solution process was carried through one cycle and output electrostatic potentials compared to NASCAP-type input potentials.

CFD modeling of an arc-heated jet

On the basis of state-of-the-art numerical techniques and physical models, a new CFD program is developed for the simulation of a high-enthalpy reacting ionized thermally relaxing nitrogen plasma in a cylindrical plenum chamber. A preliminary validation by comparison with experimental results was obtained. The algorithm is shown to be very efficient, and the empirical modeling gave results of practical use for the configuration studied.
