Sequential Infiltration Synthesis of Cadmium Sulfide Discrete Atom Clusters

Abstract Exposure of soft material templates to alternating volatile chemical precursors can produce inorganic deposition within the permeable template (e.g. a polymer thin film) in a process akin to atomic layer deposition (ALD). While such sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) processes have now been demonstrated for many metal oxides, we report an SIS process for a transition metal sulfide – CdS. Gas phase dimethyl cadmium and hydrogen sulfide precursors infiltrated into poly(4‐vinylpyridine) thin films result in the 3D‐nucleation of clusters consistent with a cubane‐type Cd 4 S 4 core that are variably terminated with methyl, thiol and hydroxy capping ligands. First principles models and simulation of few‐atom Cd‐based clusters are consistent with electronic and vibrational spectroscopy and grazing‐incidence total X‐ray scattering measurements of 3D‐cluster‐arrays synthesized at 80 °C. The direct synthesis of few‐atom transition metal sulfide clusters within polymer thin films will provide a versatile new route to precision architectures for light‐absorbing materials including solar energy harvesting and conversion applications.

Protein–Protein Complex Stability Controls Substrate Scope in a β‐Ketoacyl‐ACP Reductase Specific for Medium Chains

Assembly-line enzymes carry out multistep synthesis of important metabolites by using acyl carrier proteins (ACPs) to shuttle intermediates along defined sequences of active sites. Despite longstanding interest in reprogramming these systems for metabolic engineering and biosynthetic chemistry, the mechanisms underlying their reaction order remain poorly understood and difficult to control. In this work, we describe a β-ketoacyl-ACP reductase from Pseudomonas putida (PpFabG4) with an unusual selectivity for medium chains and use it to explore the molecular basis of substrate specificity in enzymes that pull intermediates from fatty acid synthesis, a common route to specialized products. X-ray crystallography shows no obvious barriers to short-chain binding. Molecular simulations and supporting mutational analyses indicate that substrate preference arises instead from a weak enzyme–ACP interaction that is stabilized by medium acyl chains but not by short chains. Indeed, mutations that strengthen this interaction for PpFabG4 or weaken it for EcFabG, an Escherichia coli β-ketoacyl-ACP reductase with a broad substrate specificity, can enhance or reduce activity on short-chain substrates by over 100-fold. Our findings show how the stability of enzyme-ACP interactions can control substrate scope in promiscuous enzymes and guide the exchange of intermediates between (and within) assembly-line systems.

Twisted Tin‐Chloride Perovskite Single‐Crystal Heterostructures

Self-assembly affords simpler synthetic routes to heterostructures compared with manual layer-by-layer stacking, yet controlling interlayer twist angles in a bulk solid remains an outstanding challenge. We report two new single-crystal heterostructures: (Sn 2 Cl 2 )(CYS) 2 SnCl 4 (CYS = + NH 3 (CH 2 ) 2 S – ; Sn_CYS) and (Sn 2 Cl 2 )(SeCYS) 2 SnCl 4 (SeCYS = + NH 3 (CH 2 ) 2 Se – ; Sn_SeCYS) synthesized in solution, with alternating perovskite and intergrowth layers. Notably, compared to the recently reported lead analog, (Pb 2 Cl 2 )(CYS) 2 PbCl 4 (Pb_CYS), the tin heterostructures feature a twist between the perovskite and intergrowth layers. We trace this twist to local distortions at the Sn centers, which change the interfacial lattice-matching requirements compared to those of the Pb analog. Electronic band structure calculations show that the striking differences in the relative energies of perovskite- and intergrowth-derived bands in Sn_CYS and Pb_CYS arise from structural and not compositional differences. The structural anisotropy of Sn_CYS is also reflected in a large in-plane photoluminescence linear anisotropy ratio. Interfacial strain further affords differential incorporation of Pb into the perovskite and intergrowth layers of the Sn heterostructures, resulting in redshifted optical absorption onsets. Thus, we posit that local structural distortions may be exploited to manipulate the twist angle and interfacial strain in bulk heterostructures, providing a new handle for tuning the band alignments of bulk quantum-well electronic structures.

The Critical Role of Reductive Steps in the Nickel‐Catalyzed Hydrogenolysis and Hydrolysis of Aryl Ether C−O Bonds

Abstract The hydrogenolysis of the aromatic C−O bond in aryl ethers catalyzed by Ni was studied in decalin and water. Observations of a significant kinetic isotope effect ( k H / k D =5.7) for the reactions of diphenyl ether under H 2 and D 2 atmosphere and a positive dependence of the rate on H 2 chemical potential in decalin indicate that addition of H to the aromatic ring is involved in the rate‐limiting step. All kinetic evidence points to the fact that H addition occurs concerted with C−O bond scission. DFT calculations also suggest a route consistent with these observations involving hydrogen atom addition to the ipso position of the phenyl ring concerted with C−O scission. Hydrogenolysis initiated by H addition in water is more selective (ca. 75 %) than reactions in decalin (ca. 30 %).

A Unified Mechanism on the Formation of Acenes, Helicenes, and Phenacenes in the Gas Phase

A unified low-temperature reaction mechanism on the formation of acenes, phenacenes, and helicenes—polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are distinct via the linear, zigzag, and ortho-condensed arrangements of fused benzene rings—is illustrated. This mechanism is mediated through a barrierless, vinylacetylene mediated gas-phase chemistry utilizing tetracene, [4]phenacene, and [4]helicene as benchmarks contesting established ideas that molecular mass growth processes to PAHs transpire at elevated temperatures. This mechanism opens up an isomer-selective route to aromatic structures involving submerged reaction barriers, resonantly stabilized free-radical intermediates, and systematic ring annulation potentially yielding molecular wires along with racemic mixtures of helicenes in deep space. Thus, connecting helicene templates to the Origins of Life ultimately changes our hypothesis on interstellar carbon chemistry.

NaGaS 2 - an Elusive Layered Compound with Dynamic Water Absorption and Wide-Ranging Ion Exchange Properties

Most ternary sulfides belonging to the MGaS 2 structure-type have been known for many years and are well-characterized. Surprisingly, there have been no reports of the NaGaS 2 composition, which contains Na, a monovalent cation slightly larger in size than Li, found in LiGaS 2 , a compound known for its non-linear optical properties. Herein we demonstrate for the first time that the unique reversible water absorption in NaGaS 2 has resulted in its absence from the literature due to the difficulties that one encounters when characterizing this compound by SC XRD. The layered structure of this compound coupled with uniquely easy migration of water molecules between the layers allows for ion exchange with 3d and 5f metal cations. We established that some cations, e.g. Ni 2+ , facilitate exfoliation of the layers, providing a facile synthetic route to a new class of 2D chalcogenide materials and, in addition, demonstrating that NaGaS 2 can readily uptake uranyl species from aqueous solutions.

A Free-Radical Prompted Barrierless Gas-Phase Synthesis of Pentacene

A representative, low-temperature gas-phase reaction mechanism synthesizing polyacenes via ring annulation exemplified by the formation of pentacene (C 22 H 14 ) along with its benzo[ a ]tetracene isomer (C 22 H 14 ) is unraveled by probing the elementary reaction of the 2-tetracenyl radical (C 18 H 11 . ) with vinylacetylene (C 4 H 4 ). The pathway to pentacene—a prototype polyacene and a fundamental molecular building block in graphenes, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes—is facilitated by a barrierless, vinylacetylene mediated gas-phase process thus disputing conventional hypotheses that synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) solely proceeds at elevated temperatures. This low-temperature pathway can launch isomer-selective routes to aromatic structures through submerged reaction barriers, resonantly stabilized free-radical intermediates, and methodical ring annulation in deep space eventually changing our perception about the chemistry of carbon in our universe.

Cation Additive Enabled Rechargeable LiOH-Based Lithium–Oxygen Batteries

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries have attracted extensive research interest due to their high energy density. Other than Li 2 O 2 (a typical discharge product in Li-O 2 batteries), LiOH has proved to be electrochemically active as an alternative product. Here we report a simple strategy to achieve a reversible LiOH-based Li-O 2 battery by using a cation additive, sodium ions, to the lithium electrolyte. Without redox mediators in the cell, LiOH is detected as the sole discharge product and it charges at a low charge potential of 3.4 V. A solution-based reaction route is proposed, showing that the competing solvation environment of the catalyst and Li+ leads to LiOH precipitation at the cathode. It is critical to tune the cell chemistry of Li-O 2 batteries by designing a simple system to promote LiOH formation/decomposition.

Ligand Protonation Triggers H 2 Release from a Dinickel Dihydride Complex to Give a Doubly “T”-Shaped Dinickel(I) Metallodiradical

The dinickel(II) dihydride complex (1 K ) ofapyrazolate-based compartmental ligand with b-diketiminato (nacnac) chelate arms (L - ), providing two pincer-type {N 3 } binding pockets, has been reported to readily eliminate H 2 and to serve as a masked dinickel(I) species. Discrete dinickel(I) complexes (2 Na , 2 K ) of L - are now synthesized via a direct reduction route. They feature two adjacent T-shaped metalloradicals that are antiferromagnetically coupled, giving an S = 0 ground state. The two singly occupied local d x 2 -y 2 type magnetic orbitals are oriented into the bimetallic cleft, enabling metal–metal cooperative 2 e - substrate reductions as shown by the rapid reaction with H 2 or O 2 . X-ray crystallography reveals distinctly different positions of the K + in 1 K and 2 K , suggesting a stabilizing interaction of K + with the dihydride unit in 1 K . H 2 release from 1 K is triggered by peripheral g-C protonation at the nacnac subunits, which DFT calculations show lowers the barrier for reductive H 2 elimination from the bimetallic cleft.

Self-Adjusting Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient Capture of Trace Xenon and Krypton

The capture of the xenon and krypton from nuclear reprocessing off-gas is essential to the treatment of radioactive waste. Although various porous materials have been employed to capture Xe and Kr, the development of high-performance adsorbents capable of trapping Xe/Kr at very low partial pressure as in the nuclear reprocessing off-gas conditions remains challenging. Herein, we report a self-adjusting metal-organic framework based on multiple weak binding interactions to capture trace Xe and Kr from the nuclear reprocessing off-gas. The self-adjusting behavior of ATC-Cu and its mechanism have been visualized by the in-situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and theoretical calculations. The self-adjusting behavior endows ATC-Cu unprecedented uptake capacities of 2.65 and 0.52 mmol g -1 for Xe and Kr respectively at 0.1 bar and 298 K, as well as the record Xe capture capability from the nuclear reprocessing off-gas. Further, our work not only provides a benchmark Xe adsorbent but proposes a new route to construct smart materials for efficient separations.

Programmed Supramolecular Assemblies Using Orthogonal Pairs of Heterodimeric Coiled Coil Peptides

Despite recent progress, it remains challenging to program biomacromolecules to assemble into discrete nanostructures with pre-determined sizes and topologies. We report here a novel strategy to address this challenge. By using two orthogonal pairs of heterodimeric coiled coils as the building blocks, we constructed six discrete supramolecular assemblies, each composed of a prescribed number of coiled coil components. Within these assemblies, different coiled coils were connected via end-to-side covalent linkages strategically pre-installed between the non-complementary pairs. The overall topological features of two highly complex assemblies, a “barbell” and a “quadrilateral” form, were characterized experimentally and were in good agreement to the designs. This work expands the design paradigms for peptide-based discrete supramolecular assemblies and will provide a route for de novo fabrication of functional protein materials.

Perovskite Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction or Photoredox Organic Transformation?

Abstract Metal‐halide perovskites have been explored as photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction. We report that perovskite photocatalytic CO 2 reduction in organic solvents is likely problematic. Instead, the detected products (i.e., CO) likely result from a photoredox organic transformation involving the solvent. Our observations have been validated using isotopic labeling experiments, band energy analysis, and new control experiments. We designed a typical perovskite photocatalytic setup in organic solvents that led to CO production of up to ≈1000 μmol g −1 h −1 . CO 2 reduction in organic solvents must be studied with extra care because photoredox organic transformations can produce orders of magnitude higher rate of CO or CH 4 than is typical for CO 2 reduction routes. Though CO 2 reduction is not likely to occur, in situ CO generation is extremely fast. Hence a suitable system can be established for challenging organic reactions that use CO as a feedstock but exploit the solvent as a CO surrogate.

Metal-like Charge Transport in PEDOT(OH) Films by Post-processing Side Chain Removal from a Soluble Precursor Polymer

Herein, a route to produce highly electrically conductive doped hydroxymethyl functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films, termed PEDOT(OH) with metal-like charge transport properties using a fully solution processable precursor polymer is reported. Further, this is achieved via an ester-functionalized PEDOT derivative [PEDOT(EHE)] that is soluble in a range of solvents with excellent film-forming ability. PEDOT(EHE) demonstrates moderate electrical conductivities of 20–60 S cm -1 and hopping-like (i.e., thermally activated) transport when doped with ferric tosylate (FeTos 3 ). Upon basic hydrolysis of PEDOT(EHE) films, the electrically insulative side chains are cleaved and washed from the polymer film, leaving a densified film of PEDOT(OH). These films, when optimally doped, reach electrical conductivities of ≈1200 S cm -1 and demonstrate metal-like (i.e., thermally deactivated and band-like) transport properties and high stability at comparable doping levels.

Multiple Roles of Alkanethiolate‐Ligands in Direct Formation of H 2 O 2 over Pd Nanoparticles

Abstract Coadsorbed organic species including thiolates can promote direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from H 2 and O 2 over Pd particles. Here, density functional theory based kinetic modeling, augmented with activity measurements and vibrational spectroscopy are used to provide atomistic understanding of direct H 2 O 2 formation over alkylthiolate(RS) Pd. We find that the RS species are oxidized during reaction conditions yielding RSO 2 as the effective ligand. The RSO 2 ligand shows superior ability for proton transfer to the intermediate surface species OOH, which accelerates the formation of H 2 O 2 . The ligands promote the selectivity also by blocking sites for unselective water formation and by modifying the electronic structure of Pd. The work rationalizes observations of enhanced selectivity of direct H 2 O 2 formation over ligand‐funtionalized Pd nanoparticles and shows that engineering of organic surface modifiers can be used to promote desired hydrogen transfer routes.

Near‐Room‐Temperature Magnetoelectric Coupling via Spin Crossover in an Iron(II) Complex

Abstract Magnetoelectric coupling is achieved near room temperature in a spin crossover Fe II molecule‐based compound, [Fe(1bpp) 2 ](BF 4 ) 2 . Large atomic displacements resulting from Jahn–Teller distortions induce a change in the molecule dipole moment when switching between high‐spin and low‐spin states leading to a step‐wise change in the electric polarization and dielectric constant. For temperatures in the region of bistability, the changes in magnetic and electrical properties are induced with a remarkably low magnetic field of 3 T. This result represents a successful expansion of magnetoelectric spin crossovers towards ambient conditions. Moreover, the observed 0.3–0.4 mC m −2 changes in the H ‐induced electric polarization suggest that the high strength of the coupling obtained via this route is accessible not just at cryogenic temperatures but also near room temperature, a feature that is especially appealing in the light of practical applications.

Conversion of Polyethylenes into Fungal Secondary Metabolites

Waste plastics represent major environmental and economic burdens due to their ubiquity, slow breakdown rates, and inadequacy of current recycling routes. Polyethylenes are particularly problematic, because they lack robust recycling approaches despite being the most abundant plastics in use today. We report a novel chemical and biological approach for the rapid conversion of polyethylenes into structurally complex and pharmacologically active compounds. We present conditions for aerobic, catalytic digestion of polyethylenes collected from post-consumer and oceanic waste streams, creating carboxylic diacids that can then be used as a carbon source by the fungus Aspergillus nidulans. As a proof of principle, we have engineered strains of A. nidulans to synthesize the fungal secondary metabolites asperbenzaldehyde, citreoviridin, and mutilin when grown on these digestion products. This hybrid approach considerably expands the range of products to which polyethylenes can be upcycled.

Design of Multicomponent Peptide Fibrils with Ordered and Programmable Compositional Patterns

Advanced applications of biomacromolecular assemblies require a stringent degree of control over molecular arrangement, which is a challenge to current synthetic methods. Here we used a neighbor-controlled patterning strategy to build multicomponent peptide fibrils with an unprecedented capacity to manipulate local composition and peptide positions. Eight peptides were designed to have regulable nearest neighbors upon co-assembly, which, by simulation, afforded 412 different patterns within fibrils, with varied compositions and/or peptide positions. The fibrils with six prescribed patterns were experimentally constructed with high accuracy. The controlled patterning also applies to functionalities appended to the peptides, as exemplified by arranging carbohydrate ligands at nanoscale precision for protein recognition. Importantly, this study offers a route to molecular editing of inner structures of peptide assemblies, prefiguring the uniqueness and richness of patterning-based material design.
