An automatic gore panel mapping system

The Automatic Gore Mapping System is being developed to reduce the time and labor costs associated with manufacturing the External Tank. The present chem-milling processes and procedures are discussed. The down loading of the simulation of the system has to be performed to verify that the simulation package will translate the simulation code into robot code. Also a simulation of this system has to be programmed for a gantry robot instead of the articulating robot that is presently in the system. It was discovered using the simulation package that the articulation robot cannot reach all the point on some of the panels, therefore when the system is ready for production, a gantry robot will be used. Also a hydrosensor system is being developed to replace the point-to-point contact probe. The hydrosensor will allow the robot to perform a non-contact continuous scan of the panel. It will also provide a faster scan of the panel because it will eliminate the in-and-out movement required for the present end effector. The system software is currently being modified so that the hydrosensor will work with the system. The hydrosensor consists of a Krautkramer-Branson transducer encased in a plexiglass nozzle. The water stream pumped through the nozzle is the couplant for the probe. Also, software is being written so that the robot will have the ability to draw the contour lines on the panel displaying the out-of-tolerance regions. Presently the contour lines can only be displayed on the computer screens. Research is also being performed on improving and automating the method of scribing the panels. Presently the panels are manually scribed with a sharp knife. The use of a low power laser or water jet is being studied as a method of scribing the panels. The contour drawing pen will be replaced with scribing tool and the robot will then move along the contour lines. With these developments the Automatic Gore Mapping Systems will provide a reduction in time and labor costs associated with manufacturing the External Task. The system also has the potential of inspecting other manufactured parts.

Neural network representation and learning of mappings and their derivatives

Discussed here are recent theorems proving that artificial neural networks are capable of approximating an arbitrary mapping and its derivatives as accurately as desired. This fact forms the basis for further results establishing the learnability of the desired approximations, using results from non-parametric statistics. These results have potential applications in robotics, chaotic dynamics, control, and sensitivity analysis. An example involving learning the transfer function and its derivatives for a chaotic map is discussed.

Preliminary geologic mapping near the Nilosyrtis Mensae, Mars

Virtually the entire map area is mantled by an irregular deposit of material that is apparently fine-grained and erodible. It is also extremely young, as there is not a single crater larger than 1 km in the map area that was emplaced atop the mantle. Knobs abound in the study area; many are presumably caused by the mantling of pre-existing topography. In many cases the older knob of the core is exposed. Many such knob cores are surrounded by small scarplets; it is not yet clear whether the scarplets are the eroded edges of mantle beds that at one time draped over the knob core and have been subsequently exposed by erosion, or whether they are eroded versions of lobate debris aprons. Many craters in the study area contain concentric crater fill, which may indicate downslope movement of volatile-rich materials or repeated cycles of aeolian gradation.

Nonlinear systems dynamics in cardiovascular physiology: The heart rate delay map and lower body negative pressure

A preliminary study of the applicability of nonlinear dynamic systems analysis techniques to low body negative pressure (LBNP) studies. In particular, the applicability of the heart rate delay map is investigated. It is suggested that the heart rate delay map has potential as a supplemental tool in the assessment of subject performance in LBNP tests and possibly in the determination of susceptibility to cardiovascular deconditioning with spaceflight.

Tuning maps for setpoint changes and load disturbance upsets in a three capacity process under multivariable control

Tuning maps are an aid in the controller tuning process because they provide a convenient way for the plant operator to determine the consequences of adjusting different controller parameters. In this application the maps provide a graphical representation of the effect of varying the gains in the state feedback matrix on startup and load disturbance transients for a three capacity process. Nominally, the three tank system, represented in diagonal form, has a Proportional-Integral control on each loop. Cross coupling is then introduced between the loops by using non-zero off-diagonal proportional parameters. Changes in transient behavior due to setpoint and load changes are examined by varying the gains of the cross coupling terms.

Lightning mapping system

A Lightning Detection and Ranging (LDAR) System is being implemented at KSC in Florida. The first operational use is expected in the late summer of 1991. The system is designed to map the location of in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning based on the time of arrival (TOA) of electromagnetic radiation. The system detects very high frequency (VHF) radiation and designed to map the volumetric extent of lightning. The system implements two independent antenna arrays to provide a fast data quality check, as necessary for a real-time warning system. The system performance goals and a comparison with a similar system implemented in the mid-1970's is made.

Spectroscopic parallaxes of MAP region stars from UBVRI, DDO, and uvbyH-beta photometry

This paper presents the results of spectral type and luminosity classification of reference stars in the Allegheny Observatory MAP parallax program, using broadband and intermediate-band photometry. In addition to the use of UBVRI and DDO photometric systems, the uvbyH-beta photometric system was included for classification of blue (B - V less than 0.6) reference stars. The stellar classifications made from the photometry are used to determine spectroscopic parallaxes. The spectroscopic parallaxes are used in turn to adjust the relative parallaxes measured with the MAP to absolute parallaxes. A new method for dereddening stars using more than one photometric system is presented. In the process of dereddening, visual extinctions, spectral types, and luminosity classes are determined, as well as a measure of the goodness of fit. The measure of goodness of fit quantifies confidence in the stellar classifications. It is found that the spectral types are reliable to within 2.5 spectral subclasses.

Maps or analogies? A comparison of instructional aids for menu navigation

The relative efficacy of a variety of spatial maps and analogies as instructional aids for the learning and navigation of hierachical data bases is studied. Subjects performed single- and multinode retrieval tasks with novel data bases. The results of one experiment indicated that subjects who studied an analogy prior to performing data-retrieval tasks were less affected by increasing search distance than were subjects who studied a spatial map. The second experiment suggested that the benefits of analogy relative to other instructional aids increased as time passed between initial instruction and interaction with the data base.

Airborne and spaceborne radars for rain mapping

The use of spaceborne rain radars for global and tropical precipitation mapping can provide significant information for atmospheric and climatic studies. Several key design issues for such a spaceborne rain radar are presented. Attention is also given to the design and development of an airborne rain mapping radar that will be used to support the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission. The system characteristics and expected measurement performance are summarized.

Automated thermal mapping techniques using chromatic image analysis

Thermal imaging techniques are introduced using a chromatic image analysis system and temperature sensitive coatings. These techniques are used for thermal mapping and surface heat transfer measurements on aerothermodynamic test models in hypersonic wind tunnels. Measurements are made on complex vehicle configurations in a timely manner and at minimal expense. The image analysis system uses separate wavelength filtered images to analyze surface spectral intensity data. The system was initially developed for quantitative surface temperature mapping using two-color thermographic phosphors but was found useful in interpreting phase change paint and liquid crystal data as well.

Quantitative lithologic mapping in spectral ratio feature space - Volcanic, sedimentary and metamorphic terrains

The nature of spectral lithologic mapping is studied utilizing ratios centered around the wavelength means of TM imagery. Laboratory-derived spectra are analyzed to determine the two-dimensional relationships and distributions visible in spectral ratio feature space. The spectral distributions of various rocks and minerals in ratio feature space are found to be controlled by several spectrally dominant molecules. Three study areas were examined: Rawhide Mining District, Nevada; Manzano Mountains, New Mexico; and the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research site in New Mexico. It is shown that, in the comparison of two ratio plots of laboratory reflectance spectra, i.e., 0.66/0.485 micron versus 1.65/2.22 microns with those derived from TM data, several molecules spectrally dominate the reflectance characteristic of surface lithologic units. Utilizing the above ratio combination, two areas are successfully mapped based on their distribution in spectral ratio feature space.

Echo mapping of broad H-beta emission in NGC 5548

A one-dimensional echo map of the broad H-beta emission-line region in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 is reconstructed by using a maximum entropy technique to model the variable optical continuum and integrated H-beta emission-line fluxes observed during the 1989-1990 monitoring campaign as reported by Peterson et al. (1991). The echo map has a strong peak at a time delay of 20 lt-days which has an unresolved full width of 20 days at half-maximum. The H-beta response at time delay zero is less than one-third of that at 20 days, implying a deficit of H-beta-emitting gas near the line of sight to the continuum source. This rules out spherically symmetric and edge-on disk geometries for isotropically emitting H-beta clouds.

Polarimetric mapping of Orion using Millipol - Magnetic activity in BN/KL

The spatial distribution of the polarized component of the thermal dust emission from the core of the Orion molecular cloud has been mapped over 15 positions at a wavelength of 1300 microns using the Millipol instrument on the NRAO 12 m telescope. The polarization directions deduced for the map positions are quite similar, implying that the embedded magnetic field is strong (of the order of 1 mG) and uniform in direction over the core of the cloud. The mean polarization percentage, 4.6 percent, is quite high, and two positions show polarization percentages of nearly 8 percent, the highest yet detected for polarized thermal dust emission. Finally, the polarization of the BN/KL position was found to be significantly lower than the polarizations toward positions 30 arcmin outside BN/KL.

Global mapping of minor atmospheric constituents with AIRS on EOS

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) is a grating-array spectrometer on EOS. It covers the region from 650 to 3000/cm with spectral resolution of 1200. The prime objective of AIRS is the global retrieval of temperature and water vapor profiles and of surface temperatures. The wide spectral coverage of AIRS permits the measurement of a number of additional atmospheric and surface parameters. Of particular interest is the potential to produce daily global maps of the spatial distribution of the more abundant of the minor gases, e.g. ozone, CO, CH4, and N2O. This potential capability for CH4 and N2O is strongly affected by cloud residual. Using the CH4 band at 1306/cm as example, spatial averaging of AIRS data is required to measure a 10 percent change in the nominal CH4 column abundance. At 1300/cm, this requires cloud clearing at the 0.3 percent level. The mapping capability for ozone and CO in terms of rural/urban abundance patterns is not likely to be impacted with cloud-clearing residuals as high as 5 percent.

Mapping sea ice leads with a coupled numeric/symbolic system

A method is presented which facilitates the detection and delineation of leads with single-channel Landsat data by coupling numeric and symbolic procedures. The procedure consists of three steps: (1) using the dynamic threshold method, an image is mapped to a lead/no lead binary image; (2) the likelihood of fragments to be real leads is examined with a set of numeric rules; and (3) pairs of objects are examined geometrically and merged where possible. The processing ends when all fragments are merged and statistical characteristics are determined, and a map of valid lead objects are left which summarizes useful physical in the lead complexes. Direct implementation of domain knowledge and rapid prototyping are two benefits of the rule-based system. The approach is found to be more successfully applied to mid- and high-level processing, and the system can retrieve statistics about sea-ice leads as well as detect the leads.
