Microprocessor realizations of range rate filters

The performance of five digital range rate filters is evaluated. A range rate filter receives an input of range data from a radar unit and produces an output of smoothed range data and its estimated derivative range rate. The filters are compared through simulation on an IBM 370. Two of the filter designs are implemented on a 6800 microprocessor-based system. Comparisons are made on the bases of noise variance reduction ratios and convergence times of the filters in response to simulated range signals.

Aerodynamic heating on complex configurations

A relatively simple method was developed previously (DeJarnette and Hamilton, 1973; 1975) to calculate laminar transitional and turbulent heating rates on blunt bodies at angles of attack, taking into account entropy-swelling effects. The method has now been extended to include complex configurations and the use of input surface pressure data when available. Applications of the extended method to the HL-10 Lifting Body, a blunted tangent ogive, a blunted tangent-ogive cylinder, and the Viking Aeroshell are discussed.

A prescription of Winograd's discrete Fourier transform algorithm

A detailed and complete description of Winograd's discrete Fourier transform algorithm (DFT) is presented omitting all proofs and derivations. The algorithm begins with the transfer of data from the input vector array to the working array where the actual transformation takes place, otherwise known as input scrambling and output unscrambling. The third array holds constraints required in the transformation stage that are evaluated in the precomputation stage. The algorithm is made up of several FORTRAN subroutines which are not to be confused with practical software algorithmic implementation since they are designed for clarity and not for speed.

Near-field noise prediction for aircraft in cruising flight: Methods manual

Methods for predicting noise at any point on an aircraft while the aircraft is in a cruise flight regime are presented. Developed for use in laminar flow control (LFC) noise effects analyses, they can be used in any case where aircraft generated noise needs to be evaluated at a location on an aircraft while under high altitude, high speed conditions. For each noise source applicable to the LFC problem, a noise computational procedure is given in algorithm format, suitable for computerization. Three categories of noise sources are covered: (1) propulsion system, (2) airframe, and (3) LFC suction system. In addition, procedures are given for noise modifications due to source soundproofing and the shielding effects of the aircraft structure wherever needed. Sample cases, for each of the individual noise source procedures, are provided to familiarize the user with typical input and computed data.

User's manual to the ACTION computer code

The form and interpretation of input and output data are defined. The Analysis of Crash Transients in Inelastic and Geometrically Nonlinear structures program (ACTION) performs nonlinear transient response analysis of structures subjected to time varying loads, allowing for nonlinear, time independent material properties and large geometry changes.

The NASTRAN user's manual (level 17.0)

NASTRAN embodies a lumped element approach, wherein the distributed physical properties of a structure are represented by a model consisting of a finite number of idealized substructures or elements that are interconnected at a finite of grid points, to which loads are applied. All input and output data pertain to the idealized structural model. The general procedures for defining structural models are described and instructions are given for each of the bulk data cards and case control cards. Additional information on the case control cards and use of parameters is included for each rigid format.

General description and operation of the agro-environmental system: Crop management modeling

Input for a data management system to provide farmers with information to improve crop management practices in Virginia requires monitoring of control crops at field stations, crop surveys derived from remotely sensed aircraft data, meteorological data from synchronous satellites, and details of local agricultural conditions. Presently models are under development for determining pest problems, water balance in the soil, stages of plant maturity, and optimum planting date. The status of the Cerospora leafspot model for peanut crop management is considered. Other models under development planned relate to Cylindtocladium Blackrot and Sclerotinia blight of peanuts, cyst nematode (Globerdena solanacearum) of tobacco, and red crown rot of soybeans. A software for program for estimating precipitation and solar radiation on a statewise basis is also being developed.

Optical processing for landmark identification

A study of optical pattern recognition techniques, available components and airborne optical systems for use in landmark identification was conducted. A data base of imagery exhibiting multisensor, seasonal, snow and fog cover, exposure, and other differences was assembled. These were successfully processed in a scaling optical correlator using weighted matched spatial filter synthesis. Distinctive data classes were defined and a description of the data (with considerable input information and content information) emerged from this study. It has considerable merit with regard to the preprocessing needed and the image difference categories advanced. A optical pattern recognition airborne applications was developed, assembled and demontrated. It employed a laser diode light source and holographic optical elements in a new lensless matched spatial filter architecture with greatly reduced size and weight, as well as component positioning toleranced.

Calculation of symmetric vortex separation affecting subsonic bodies at high incidence

A method for calculating the longitudinal aerodynamic coefficients and the pressure distributions on a body at reasonably high angles of attack is presented. The body is represented by a combination of source elements and vortex-lattice elements, including separation of the vortices at increasing angles of attack. The method is self-consistent in that the body and the separated vortex wake are treated as an integrated interacting system. The location of the separation line can be included as an arbitrary input from experimental data or can be evaluated approximately by a pressure-dependent criterion. Calculated values of the aerodynamic coefficients and pressure distributions on cone-cylinder and ogive-cylinder bodies compare well, qualitatively and quantitatively, with experimental data, including simulation of the dependence on Reynolds number.

Electro-optical processor for optimal control

An iterative optical processor has been developed for applications in the optimal control of advanced sensor systems. The processor is designed for the realization of the Richardson algorithm on bipolar data, using as input a linear array of LEDs. The usefulness of the processor has been demonstrated by the solution of the linear quadratic regulator problem for the optimal control signals of the F100 turbofan engine. In this case study, the algebraic Riccati equation matrix was solved by the use of a modified Kleinman algorithm along with the Richardson algorithm applied to a system of linear algebraic equations. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the gradual convergence of the processor.

Analysis of severe storm data

The Mesoscale Analysis and Space Sensor (MASS) Data Management and Analysis System developed by Atsuko Computing International (ACI) on the MASS HP-1000 Computer System within the Systems Dynamics Laboratory of the Marshall Space Flight Center is described. The MASS Data Management and Analysis System was successfully implemented and utilized daily by atmospheric scientists to graphically display and analyze large volumes of conventional and satellite derived meteorological data. The scientists can process interactively various atmospheric data (Sounding, Single Level, Gird, and Image) by utilizing the MASS (AVE80) share common data and user inputs, thereby reducing overhead, optimizing execution time, and thus enhancing user flexibility, useability, and understandability of the total system/software capabilities. In addition ACI installed eight APPLE III graphics/imaging computer terminals in individual scientist offices and integrated them into the MASS HP-1000 Computer System thus providing significant enhancement to the overall research environment.
