Porous condensers can double the efficiency of membrane distillation

Among membrane distillation (MD) configurations, air gap MD (AGMD) has superior energy efficiency at high salinity. However, flooding of the gap prevents optimal thin gap depths as water removal is a challenge. To address these challenges, this work provides the first analysis of efficiency enhancement via porous wicking conductive condensers in MD. To do so, we examined performance with experiments and comprehensive thermo-fluid numerical models; we find that the porous wick condenser significantly improves thermal efficiency, gain output ratio (GOR), and flux. MD experiments show that the porous copper foam improves the thermal efficiency of air gap membrane distillation up to 40 % and water flux up to 144 %. Numerical modeling shows the porous copper foam improves the GOR of membrane distillation in high salinity by 98.7 %, outperforming air gap MD, permeate gap MD, and conductive gap MD. Furthermore, the optimized thickness and permeability of porous condensers significantly help eliminate the risk of flooding in AGMD.

Interconnected cathode-electrolyte double-layer enabling continuous Li-ion conduction throughout solid-state Li-S battery

All-solid-state lithium (Li) batteries with high energy density are a promising solution for the next-generation energy storage systems in large-scale devices. To simultaneously overcome the challenges of poor ionic conduction of solid electrolytes and shuttling of active materials, here we introduce a functional electrolyte-cathode bilayer framework with interconnected LLAZO channels from the electrolyte into the cathode for advanced solid-state Li-S batteries. Differing from the traditional solid-state batteries with separated layer compositions, the introduced bilayer framework provides ultrafast and continuous ion/electron conduction. Instead of transferring Li+ across the polymer and garnet phases which involve huge interfacial resistance, Li+ is directly conducted through the LLAZO channels created continuously from the cathode layer to the solid electrolyte layer, significantly shortening the diffusion distance and facilitating the redox reaction of sulfur and sulfides. A stable cycle life is demonstrated in the prototype Li-S solid-state batteries assembled with the introduced LLAZO-LLAZO@CNF interconnected bilayer framework. High capacity is obtained at room temperature, indicating the superior electrochemical properties of the bilayer framework that result from the unique design of the interconnected LLAZO garnet phase.

Design and processing for high performance Li ion battery electrodes with double-layer structure

A two-layer LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) cathode has been designed and fabricated containing a “power layer” and “energy layer”, with corresponding porosity and particle size prescribed to each layer to achieve best utilization of electrode material (maximum integrated depth of discharge across the electrode thickness) at high applied current. The cathode showed a 17% improvement in capacity when tested in symmetric cells. When applying the design to a full cell, where both positive and negative electrodes contain power and energy layers, a 74% increase in discharge capacity at 2C was achieved compared to the cell with conventional electrodes. Furthermore, this demonstrates an avenue to increase energy and power density of lithium–ion batteries and enable fast charging capability.

MPC-based double-layer real-time conditional cSelf-restoration for interconnected microgrids

In this report, we propose a novel model predictive control(MPC)-based real-time conditional self-restoration energy management system (CSR-EMS) for interconnected microgrids (IMGs) integrated with renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs). Superior to the existing IMG self-restoration methods, the “conditionality” of the proposed CSR-EMS can economically realize self-restoration and grid-assisted restoration during energy deficiency or faults, in both islanded and grid-connected modes. Cost minimization is implemented as the objective function to judge in real-time which restoration mode is economically preferred. The proposed CSR-EMS comprises two layers–the lower layer operates locally to eliminate electricity fluctuations created by RESs and ensure economic effectiveness within an MG, whereas the upper layer oversees the real-time operational status of the IMG system and determines power exchange among microgrids (MGs) during abnormalities. In detail, when a microgrid inside the IMG system experiences an energy deficiency, the CSR-EMS, on an MPC basis, intelligently optimizes power production from each dispatchable distributed generator (DG), ESS, power imported from the main grid, and power exchange among the IMGs to maintain the demand–supply balance, while considering system recovery cost, state of charge (SoC) of ESSs and operation modes of the IMGs (i.e., grid-connected or islanded mode). Simulation results and comparisons with existing IMG self-healing EMSs demonstrate the economic efficacy of the proposed CSR-EMS strategy during normal and abnormal operations, which can be used as an energy control framework for modern power systems with multiple interconnected microgrids.

Mithramycin A Radiosensitizes EWS:Fli1+ Ewing Sarcoma Cells by Inhibiting Double Strand Break Repair

The oncogenic EWS:Fli1 fusion protein is a key transcriptional mediator of Ewing sarcoma initiation, progression, and therapeutic resistance. Mithramycin A (MithA) is a potent and specific inhibitor of transcription mediated by the EWS:Fli1. We tested the hypothesis that pretreatment with MithA could selectively radiosensitize EWS:Fli1{sup +} tumor cells by altering the transcriptional response to radiation injury.
