Catheter tip force transducer for cardiovascular research

A force transducer for measuring dynamic force activity within the heart of a subject essentially consists of a U-shaped beam of low elastic compliance material. Two lines extend from the beams's legs and a long coil spring is attached to the beam. A strain gauge is coupled to one of the beam's legs to sense deflections thereof. The beam with the tines and most of the spring are surrounded by a flexible tube, defining a catheter, which is insertable into a subject's heart through an appropriate artery. The tines are extractable from the catheter for implantation into the myocardium by pushing on the end of the spring which extends beyond the external end of the catheter.

Aircraft-mounted crash-activated transmitter device

An aircraft crash location transmitter tuned to transmit on standard emergency frequencies is reported that is shock mounted in a sealed circular case atop the tail of an aircraft by means of a shear pin designed to fail under a G loading associated with a crash situation. The antenna for the transmitter is a metallic spring blade coiled like a spiral spring around the outside of the circular case. A battery within the case for powering the transmitter is kept trickle charged from the electrical system of the aircraft through a break away connector on the case. When a crash occurs, the resultant ejection of the case from the tail due to a failure of the shear pin releases the free end of the antenna which automatically uncoils. The accompanying separation of the connector effects closing of the transmitter key and results in commencement of transmission.

New two-stage accelerator for hypervelocity impact simulation

The present knowledge of the micrometeoroid environment and the simulation requirements for laboratory devices show that the simulated mass-velocity range must be extended to higher values in both mass and velocity. This is accomplished with the new two-stage accelerator, which consists of a light gas gun as the first stage and a coaxial accelerator with a compressor coil as the second stage. The operation of the new device is described together with a theoretical investigation of the timing of the first and the second stage, which leads to an appropriate adjustment of the two stages. The theoretical and experimental results agree well and show that 600-micron diameter glass beads have been accelerated to velocities near 20 km/sec.

A survey of leeside flow and heat transfer on delta planform configurations

The dominant feature of hypersonic leeside flow fields is the presence of coiled vortices which are generated as the leeside boundary layer responds to the inviscid flow field. Depending on geometric and stream parameters, the vortices can be completely maintained within the boundary layer or can lie outside which is the more familiar case of rolled-up vortices associated with separated flow. Three main areas are covered: (1) fundamental leeside flow phenomena associated with inviscid flows, separation and vortex phenomena involving viscid-inviscid interactions on sharp-edged delta wings and cones; (2) the application of these fundamental concepts to delta-wing bodies such as the space shuttle; and (3) the opportunity and a proposed approach to use early shuttle orbiter entry flights to obtain leeside data.

Design of an optical fiber cable link for lightning instrumentation

A lightning instrumentation system was designed to record current magnitudes of lightning strikes that hit a launch pad service structure at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The instrumentation system consists of a lightning ground rod with a current sensor coil, an optical transmitter, an optical fiber cable link, a detector receiver, and a recording system. The transmitter is a wideband pulse transformer driving an IR LED emitter. The transmitter operates linearly as a transducer. A low loss fiber bundle provides isolation of the recorder system from the electromagnetic field of the lightning strike. The output of an optical detector receiver module is sampled and recorded in digital format. The significant factors considered in the design were dynamic range, linearity, mechanical configuration, electromagnetic isolation, and temperature compensation.

High-beta effects and anomalous diffusion in plasmas expanding into magnetic fields

A metallic laser-produced plasma is allowed to expand transversely into an applied magnetic field, under conditions where the typical ion cyclotron radius is much larger, and the electron cyclotron radius much smaller, than the experimental dimensions. A stationary background plasma may also be present. Initially, the flow energy density exceeds (B squared/8 times pi), where B is the ambient magnetic field. Magnetic coil probes, Langmuir probes, and microwave diagnostics are used to study the plasma-field interaction. Field compression at the leading edge and field exclusion within the expanding plasma are seen. The diagnostic measurements and comparison with a theoretical model demonstrate plasma turbulence and anomalously high diffusion of field into the expanding plasma.

ELF hiss associated with plasma density enhancements in the outer magnetosphere

The low-frequency narrow hiss bands associated with plasma-density enhancements in the magnetosphere near and beyond L = 4 have been studied with the search coil magnetometer and ion mass spectrometer data from OGO 5. ELF hiss is found to accompany most of the detached plasmas in the outer magnetosphere and to be sharply limited by the steep ion-density gradient at their boundary. The observations indicate that the hiss originates in and is ducted by the plasma-density enhancements. In a particularly favorable case after an interval of low AE and Dst indices, a series of enhanced plasma-density peaks was observed between L = 4 and L = 6 in the afternoon local-time sector. In this case, it was possible to develop an empirical relation among hiss amplitude, plasma density, and L by using in situ simultaneous measurements.

The SAS-3 attitude control system

SAS-3 uses a reaction wheel to provide torque to control the spin rate. If the wheel speed becomes too great or too small, it must be restored to its nominal rate by momentum dumping which is done by magnetic torquing against the earth's magnetic field by the satellite's magnetic coils. A small rate-integrating gyro is used to sense the spin rate so that closed loop control of the spin rate can be achieved. These various systems are described in detail including the reaction wheel system, the gyro system, along with control modes (spin rate control and the star lock mode).

Design study of steady-state 30-tesla liquid-neon-cooled magnet

A design for a 30-tesla, liquid-neon-cooled magnet was reported which is capable of continuous operation. Cooled by nonboiling, forced-convection heat transfer to liquid neon flowing at 2.8 cu m/min in a closed, pressurized heat-transfer loop and structurally supported by a tapered structural ribbon, the tape-wound coils with a high-purity-aluminum conductor will produce over 30 teslas for 1 minute at 850 kilowatts. The magnet will have an inside diameter of 7.5 centimeters and an outside diameter of 54 centimeters. The minimum current density at design field will be 15.7 kA/sq cm.

Chemical vapor deposition growth

A laboratory type CVD reactor system with a vertical deposition chamber and sample pedestal heated by an external RF coil has been extensively modified by installation of mass flow controllers, automatic process sequence timers, and special bellows-sealed air-operated valves for overall improved performance. Various film characterization procedures, including classical metallography, SEM analyses, X ray diffraction analyses, surface profilometry, and electrical measurements (resistivity, carrier concentration, mobility, spreading resistance profiles, and minority-carrier lifetime by the C-V-t method) area used to correlate Si sheet properties with CVD parameters and substrate properties. Evaluation procedures and measurements are given. Experimental solar cell structures were made both in epitaxial Si sheet (on sapphire substrates) and in polycrystalline material on alumina substrates, the former to provide an indication of what might be an upper limit on performance of the latter. Preliminary results are given, as obtained in cell structures not specially designed to allow for the unique properties of the sheet material, and fabricated in material known to be far from optimum for photovoltaic performance. Low power conversion efficiencies have been obtained in the epitaxial as well as the polycrystalline Si sheet.

Vector magnetometer design study: Analysis of a triaxial fluxgate sensor design demonstrates that all MAGSAT Vector Magnetometer specifications can be met

The design of the vector magnetometer selected for analysis is capable of exceeding the required accuracy of 5 gamma per vector field component. The principal elements that assure this performance level are very low power dissipation triaxial feedback coils surrounding ring core flux-gates and temperature control of the critical components of two-loop feedback electronics. An analysis of the calibration problem points to the need for improved test facilities.

Low-noise receivers: Microwave maser development

An S-Band traveling-wave maser with a 2260- to 2400-MHz tuning capability has been built and installed on the 26-m antenna. The traveling-wave maser closed cycle refrigerator package was assembled within a limited time schedule and at low cost to meet the requirements of the very long baseline interferometry validation task. The maser uses a superconducting magnet with a field staggering coil for gain/bandwidth adjustment. The maser pump source is a Gunn effect oscillator with the capability of continuous tuning throughout the entire maser tuning range. The package was assembled from surplus components that have been used previously in the Deep Space Network in a variety of applications.

Performance characteristics of a three-axis superconducting rock magnetometer

A series of measurements are carried out with the purpose of quantitatively determining the characteristics of a commercial 6.8 cm access superconducting rock magnetometer located in the magnetic properties laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center. The measurements show that although a considerable improvement in measurement speed and signal to noise ratios can be obtained using such an instrument, a number of precautions are necessary to obtain accuracies comparable with more conventional magnetometers. These include careful calibration of the sensor outputs, optimum positioning of the sample within the detection region and quantitatively establishing the degree of cross-coupling between the detector coils. In order to examine the uniformity of response for each detector, the responses are mapped as a function of position, using a small dipole.

Semiconductor grade, solar silicon purification project

The potential for a three step SiF2 polymer transport purification process was examined. The process involves reacting low cost mg silicon with SiF4 to yield SiF2 gas which is condensed to form polymeric (SiF2)x. The polymer is then heated above 400 C to yield Si, SiF4 and higher Si sub n F sub 2n+2 homologues. This report presents and discusses continuing progress on (1) observations on (SiF2)x polymer formation and depolymerization on the small coil, (2) mass balance studies, (3) partial pressures of SiF2 and SiF4, (4) AlF3 mass spectral studies, and (5) material analysis studies.
