Emerging Trends in Power System Planning Models

This presentation highlights NREL's power system modeling capabilities, both existing and the future direction of improvements. Specific enhancements to the ReEDS (Regional Energy Deployment System) model and a new electricity market design testbed called EMIS (Electricity Markets and Investment Suite) were described. This content was part of a broader discussion to help inform the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on the Future of Electric Power in the U.S. on existing power system models and improvements needed in these models to capture the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of the power system.

FedFleet 2022: Federal Automotive Statistical Tool - FY 2021 Fleet Trends and Data Quality

This presentation presents a brief overview of the collection of information about the US government's fleet of motor vehicles using the Federal Automotive Statistical Tool (FAST), discusses the makeup and operation of the vehicle fleet during FY 2021, discusses quality of the submitted data, and touches on future aspects of fleet data collection and reporting. FAST is a web-based information system sponsored by GSA's Office of Government-wide Policy and DOE's Federal Energy Management Program to collect information about the US federal government's fleet of motor vehicles; FAST is developed, maintained, and supported by DOE's Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

Trends in Field and Laboratory Performance of Photovoltaic Modules and Materials

This DuraMAT project intends to identify bill of materials (BOM) and/or process control measures for photovoltaic modules with representative failure modes as informed by accelerated and field tests to guide next steps in module and material design. We have begun work to identify correlation between module field performance and accelerated testing results by cross-comparing a module database of accelerated test results with a module database of fielded systems. We have identified fielded systems with degraded performance, and intend to compare this to the results observed in certification and qualification testing. We also intend to apply lessons and observations from accelerated tests to the field, where it may be possible to mitigate or avoid degradation in the field.

Data-Driven Whole-Genome Clustering to Detect Geospatial, Temporal, and Functional Trends in SARS-CoV-2 Evolution

Current methods for defining SARS-CoV-2 lineages ignore the vast majority of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. We develop and apply an exhaustive vector comparison method that directly compares all known SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences to produce novel lineage classifications. We utilize data-driven models that (i) accurately capture the complex interactions across the set of all known SARS-CoV-2 genomes, (ii) scale to leadership-class computing systems, and (iii) enable tracking how such strains evolve geospatially over time. We show that during the height of the original Omicron surge, countries across Europe, Asia, and the Americas had a spatially asynchronous distribution of Omicron sub-strains. Moreover, neighboring countries were often dominated by either different clusters of the same variant or different variants altogether throughout the pandemic. Analyses of this kind may suggest a different pattern of epidemiological risk than was understood from conventional data, as well as produce actionable insights and transform our ability to prepare for and respond to current and future biological threats.

Compute-Efficient Deep Learning: Algorithmic Trends and Opportunities

Although deep learning has made great progress in recent years, the exploding economic and environmental costs of training neural networks are becoming unsustainable. To address this problem, there has been a great deal of research on algorithmically-efficient deep learning, which seeks to reduce training costs not at the hardware or implementation level, but through changes in the semantics of the training program. In this paper, we present a structured and comprehensive overview of the research in this field. First, we formalize the algorithmic speedup problem, then we use fundamental building blocks of algorithmically efficient training to develop a taxonomy. Our taxonomy highlights commonalities of seemingly disparate methods and reveals current research gaps. Next, we present evaluation best practices to enable comprehensive, fair, and reliable comparisons of speedup techniques. To further aid research and applications, we discuss common bottlenecks in the training pipeline (illustrated via experiments) and offer taxonomic mitigation strategies for them. Finally, we highlight some unsolved research challenges and present promising future directions.

Thermomechanical Reliability Aspects of Automotive Power Electronics: Current Status and Future Trends

Common failure locations (e.g., wire bonds, solder interface) and mechanisms within traditional automotive power electronics package designs and reliability concerns associated with packaging at higher temperatures and higher heat fluxes will be discussed. Examples of packaging solutions that increase mechanical reliability will be presented and state-of-health (SOH) estimation using offline and online (in situ) techniques will be described.
