Tetraquarks from intrinsic heavy quarks

A number of new tetraquark candidate states containing from one to four charm or anticharm quarks have been observed recently. Many of these new states have been discovered at the LHC. The production of these states via intrinsic charm in the proton is investigated. The tetraquark masses obtained in this approach, while dependent on the internal transverse momenta of the partons in the state, are shown to agree well with the measured masses. These calculations can provide some insight into the nature of the tetraquark candidates, whether as a bound meson pair or as a looser configuration of four individual partons. The kinematic distributions of these states as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum are also studied. The possible cross sections for these states are finally considered, with a comparison to the 𝑋⁡(3872) 𝑝 𝑇 distributions from 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV.

Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction and polarization in 𝑒 + 𝑝 collisions in the improved color evaporation model

We calculate the production and polarization of direct 𝐽/𝜓 in the improved color evaporation model in 𝑒 + 𝑝 photoproduction. We present the production as functions of transverse momentum, mass of the hadronic final state, and inelasticity. We also present the polarization parameters 𝜆 𝜗 , 𝜆 𝜑 , and 𝜆 𝜗⁢𝜑 in the helicity and the Collins-Soper frames, as well as the frame-invariant polarization parameter $\tilde{𝜆}$ as a function of transverse momentum and inelasticity. We find agreement with both 𝐽/𝜓 unpolarized cross sections and the invariant polarization parameters as a function of 𝑝𝑇.

Sudakov double logs in single-inclusive hadron production in DIS at small x from the color glass condensate formalism

We investigate the high Q 2 (photon virtuality) limit of single-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small x , using the color glass condensate formalism at next-to-leading order. We focus on the Λ QCD 2 ≪ p h 2 ≪ Q 2 kinematic regime, where p h is the produced hadron transverse momentum, and extract the Sudakov double logarithms. We further argue that compatibility between the color glass condensate calculation and transverse momentum dependent distribution factorization at one-loop order can only be achieved if the small-x evolution is kinematically constrained. Quasiclassical evaluation of gluon saturation induced helicity effects

At sub-eikonal order in the high-energy limit, helicity dependences are generally contained in the transverse components of the gluon field. In the gluon saturation regime, novel helicity effects arise from the nonlinear interaction between the eikonal-order longitudinal gluon field and the sub-eikonal-order transverse gluon field. We derive this saturation induced helicity-dependent field both by solving the classical Yang-Mills equations and through direct diagrammatic calculations. Our analysis shows that the saturation induced helicity effect is intrinsically a two-particle (or multiparticle) correlation effect, rather than a single-particle distribution effect. Furthermore, we evaluate this effect in the context of double-spin asymmetry for incoherent diffractive dijet production in longitudinally polarized electron-nucleus collisions, using a simplified helicity-extended McLerran-Venugopalan model. We find that the saturation induced helicity effect further suppresses the back-to-back peak in the dijet azimuthal angle correlation, with a magnitude comparable to that of the direct helicity effect. This gluon saturation induced helicity effect may offer a novel avenue to probe gluon saturation in polarized collisions. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Chiral-odd generalized parton distributions in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit of QCD: Spin-flavor structure, polynomiality, and sum rules

We study the nonperturbative properties of the nucleon’s chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (transversity GPDs) in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit of QCD. This includes the parametric ordering of the spin-flavor components, the polynomiality property of the moments, and the sum rules connecting the GPDs with the tensor form factors. A multipole expansion in the transverse momentum transfer is used to enumerate and interpret the structures in the nucleon matrix element of the chiral-odd partonic operator, including monopole, dipole and quadrupole terms. The 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion of the GPDs is performed using the abstract mean-field picture of baryons in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit and its symmetries. We derive a large-𝑁 𝑐 relation between the flavor-nonsinglet GPDs 𝐸$^{𝑢−𝑑}_𝑇$ and $\tilde{𝐻}^{𝑢−𝑑}_𝑇$ and test it with recent lattice QCD results. We show that the polynomiality property and sum rules of the GPDs are fulfilled with the restricted realization of translational and rotational invariance in the mean-field picture. The results provide a basis for the phenomenological analysis of chiral-odd GPDs and hard exclusive processes in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit, and for calculations in specific dynamical models.

Collins-Soper kernel in the QCD instanton vacuum

We outline a general framework for evaluating the nonperturbative soft functions in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) instanton vacuum. In particular, from the soft function we derive the Collins-Soper (CS) kernel, which drives the rapidity evolution of the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions. The resulting CS kernel, when supplemented with the perturbative contribution, agrees well with recent lattice results and some phenomenological parametrizations. Moreover, our CS kernel depends logarithmically on the large quark transverse separation, providing a key constraint on its phenomenological parametrization. Finally, a lattice calculation can be directly compared to our generic results in Euclidean signature, thus providing a new approach for evalulating the soft function and extracting the CS kernel by analytical continuation.

Single spin asymmetry in forward p A collisions from the Pomeron-odderon interference

Working in the hybrid framework of the high energy p A collisions we identify a new contribution to transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA). The phase necessary for the SSA is provided by the Pomeron-odderon interference in the dense nuclear target. The complete formula for the p A → h X polarized cross section also contains the transversity distribution for the polarized projectile as well as the real part of the twist-three fragmentation function. We numerically estimate the asymmetry A N and its nuclear dependence. Based on a model computation we find that A N can be a percent level in the forward and low- P h ⊥ region. For large nuclei we find significant suppression, with A N ∝ A − 7 / 6 parametrically. As a notable feature we find a node of A N as a function of the P h ⊥ around the values of the initial saturation scale that could be used to test this mechanism experimentally. Friction force in strongly magnetized plasmas

A charged particle moving through a plasma experiences a friction force that commonly acts antiparallel to its velocity. It was recently predicted that in strongly magnetized plasmas, in which the plasma particle gyrofrequency exceeds the plasma frequency, the friction also includes a transverse component that is perpendicular to both the velocity and Lorentz force. Here, this prediction is confirmed using molecular-dynamics simulations, and it is shown that the relative magnitude of the transverse component increases with plasma coupling strength. Furthermore, this result influences single-particle motion and macroscopic transport in strongly magnetized plasmas found in a broad range of applications.

Super-resonant four-photon collinear laser frequency multiplication in plasma

Resonant four-photon scattering could nearly double frequencies of intense laser pulses in plasma. However, transverse slippage between pulses presents a technological challenge, while collinear four-photon scattering is forbidden for classical light dispersion in plasma. Nonlinear renormalization of intense laser pulses can enable collinear four-photon resonance. However, such a very intensity-sensitive resonance is difficult to maintain for evolving pulses. Remarkably, there is a lower-dimensionality submanifold of the resonant four-photon manifold where the evolving pulses stay in resonance. Furthermore this could enable an all-optical frequency doubling of mildly relativistic-intense laser pulses in collinear geometry, advantageously free of the transverse slippage challenges.

Stability of the modulator in a plasma-modulated plasma accelerator

We explore the regime of operation of the modulator stage of a recently proposed laser-plasma accelerator scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 184801 (2021)], dubbed the plasma-modulated plasma accelerator (P-MoPA). The P-MoPA scheme offers a potential route to high-repetition-rate, GeV-scale plasma accelerators driven by picosecond-duration laser pulses from, for example, kilohertz thin-disk lasers. The first stage of the P-MoPA scheme is a plasma modulator in which a long, high-energy “drive” pulse is spectrally modulated by copropagating in a plasma channel with the low-amplitude plasma wave driven by a short, low-energy “seed” pulse. The spectrally modulated drive pulse is converted to a train of short pulses, by introducing dispersion, which can resonantly drive a large wakefield in a subsequent accelerator stage with the same on-axis plasma density as the modulator. In this paper we derive the 3D analytic theory for the evolution of the drive pulse in the plasma modulator and show that the spectral modulation is independent of transverse coordinate, which is ideal for compression into a pulse train. We then identify a transverse mode instability (TMI), similar to the TMI observed in optical fiber lasers, which sets limits on the energy of the drive pulse for a given set of laser-plasma parameters. We compare this analytic theory with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and find that even higher energy drive pulses can be modulated than those demonstrated in the original proposal.

Calibration of reactive burn and Jones-Wilkins-Lee parameters for simulations of a detonation-driven flow experiment with uncertainty quantification

Here, uncertainties in the explosive-specific parameters of the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state (EOS) are carefully considered in hydrodynamic simulations of an explosive experiment to minimize the error in the flow prediction. Experimental data of the leading shock position in the transverse direction over time serves as the prediction metric for quantifying simulation prediction error. The uncertainty quantification technique, global sensitivity analysis, is utilized to determine the JWL parameters to which the transverse shock propagation is most sensitive. A polynomial response surface (PRS) is constructed in the space of the most influential JWL parameters, and the point of minimum error between the experimental data and the PRS yields calibrated JWL parameters for the experimental flow. The simulation results following the parameter calibration show good agreement with the experimental data. It was found that two significant parameters, the heat release per unit mass of reactant Q and JWL model exponent R 1 are strongly related, which makes it difficult to identify accurate values.

Shock interacting with a random array of stationary particles underwater

Accurately predicting the force experienced by particles within a random bed during shock traversal is a challenging problem. In this paper, particle-resolved inviscid simulations of shock propagation over randomly distributed beds are performed, with the goal of quantifying the force on individual particles. Water was considered the continuum material, and then results were compared with previous research completed in air and the differences resulting from these different mediums were examined. Simulations were conducted for four different combinations of incident Mach number and bed volume fraction with the particles remaining stationary. Additionally, time-resolved streamwise and transverse force coefficients were calculated for each particle in the bed. It was observed that while the average force coefficient was similar to that of an isolated particle, the force on individual particles was substantially different. An important observation was that the inviscid drag force on some particles remained consistently positive, but others consistently negative even long after the passage of the shock. This persistent force on the particle was attributed to the potential flow fields that result from neighbors' specific locations upstream and downstream. Similar behavior was observed in the transverse force, with particles experiencing sustained force in the same lateral direction. These persistent forces are inviscid quasisteady contributions which with the viscous counterpart will play an essential role in the particle's long-term dispersion if allowed to move in response to the force.

High-Statistics Measurement of Neutrino Quasielasticlike Scattering at 6 GeV on a Hydrocarbon Target

We measure neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon at high statistics using the wideband Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam with neutrino energy peaked at 6 GeV. The double-differential cross section is reported in terms of muon longitudinal ( p ∥ ) and transverse ( p ⊥ ) momentum. Cross section contours versus lepton momentum components are approximately described by a conventional generator-based simulation, however, discrepancies are observed for transverse momenta above 0.5 GeV / c for longitudinal momentum ranges 3–5 and 9 – 20 GeV / c . The single differential cross section versus momentum transfer squared ( d σ / d Q QE 2 ) is measured over a four-decade range of Q 2 that extends to 10 GeV 2 . The cross section turnover and falloff in the Q 2 range 0.3 – 10 GeV 2 is not fully reproduced by generator predictions that rely on dipole form factors. Our measurement probes the axial-vector content of the hadronic current and complements the electromagnetic form factor data obtained using electron-nucleon elastic scattering. These results help oscillation experiments because they probe the importance of various correlations and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus, which have different effects on the visible energy in detectors.

Constraints on the $\chi_\mathrm{c1}$ versus $\chi_\mathrm{c2}$ Polarizations in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

The polarizations of promptly produced χc1 and χc2 mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV. The χc states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χc→J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e+e−, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χc2 to χc1 yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ→μ+μ- decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum.

Ultracold Electrons via Near-Threshold Photoemission from Single-Crystal Cu(100)

Achieving a low mean transverse energy or temperature of electrons emitted from the photocathode-based electron sources is critical to the development of next-generation and compact x-ray free electron lasers and ultrafast electron diffraction, spectroscopy, and microscopy experiments. In this Letter, we demonstrate a record low mean transverse energy of 5 meV from the cryo-cooled (100) surface of copper using near-threshold photoemission. Further, we also show that the electron energy spread obtained from such a surface is less than 11.5 meV, making it the smallest energy spread electron source known to date: more than an order of magnitude smaller than any existing photoemission, field emission, or thermionic emission based electron source. Overall, our measurements also shed light on the physics of electron emission and show how the energy spread at few meV scale energies is limited by both the temperature and the vacuum density of states.

First Measurement of Λ Electroproduction off Nuclei in the Current and Target Fragmentation Regions

Here, we report results of Λ hyperon production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets obtained with the CLAS detector and the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility 5.014 GeV electron beam. These results represent the first measurements of the Λ multiplicity ratio and transverse momentum broadening as a function of the energy fraction (z) in the current and target fragmentation regions. The multiplicity ratio exhibits a strong suppression at high z and an enhancement at low z. The measured transverse momentum broadening is an order of magnitude greater than that seen for light mesons. This indicates that the propagating entity interacts very strongly with the nuclear medium, which suggests that propagation of diquark configurations in the nuclear medium takes place at least part of the time, even at high z. The trends of these results are qualitatively described by the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model, particularly for the multiplicity ratios. These observations will potentially open a new era of studies of the structure of the nucleon as well as of strange baryons.

Enhanced Deuteron Coalescence Probability in Jets

The transverse-momentum ($p_T$) spectra and coalescence parameters $B_2$ of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\text{TeV}$ for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest $p_T$ in the event ($p^{lead}_T > 5 GeV/c$) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE. The coalescence parameter in the jet is found to be approximately a factor of 10 larger than that in the underlying event. This experimental observation is consistent with the coalescence picture and can be attributed to the smaller average phase-space distance between nucleons in the jet cone as compared with the underlying event. The results presented in this Letter are compared to predictions from a simple nucleon coalescence model, where the phase-space distributions of nucleons are generated using pythia8 with the Monash 2013 tuning, and to predictions from a deuteron production model based on ordinary nuclear reactions with parametrized energy-dependent cross sections tuned on data. The latter model is implemented in pythia8.3. Both models reproduce the observed large difference between in-jet and out-of-jet coalescence parameters, although the almost flat trend of the $B^{Jet}_2$ is not reproduced by the models, which instead give a decreasing trend.
