Isopod (inverse Optimization And Design): Moose-based Application For Performing Inverse Optimization On Multiphysics Modeling And Simulation

ISOPOD (InverSe OPtimizatiOn and Design) will be a MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment)-based framework which will iteratively estimate the parameters by minimizing the difference between simulated and experimental observables. While inverse optimization has long been used for parameter estimation, the unique feature of ISOPOD is rapid solution of new inverse problems, leading to accelerated Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) for complex parameter estimation problems. This will be achieved by extending the software structure of MOOSE to inverse optimization, as well as building on the unique automatic differentiation feature of MOOSE.

PCMDI Metrics Package

The Program for Climate Model Diagnosis & Intercomparison (PCMDI) Metrics Package (PMP) is used to provide "quick-look" objective comparisons of Earth System Models (ESMs) with one another and available observations. The PMP provides a diverse suite of analysis utilities each of which produce summary statistics that gauge the consistency between climate model simulations and available observations. The primary application of the PMP is to evaluate simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). It can also be used to provide objective performance summaries during the model development process as well as selected research purposes.

High Penetration Power Electronics Grid: Modeling and Simulation Gap Analysis

Increased penetration of power electronics in the grid is happening through development of high-power drives (like in Type 3 or 4 wind turbines, industrial drives, etc.), high-voltage direct current (HVdc) systems, flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS), energy storage systems (ESSs), inverter-based renewables like solar and wind, electric vehicle chargers, and other technologies. Ongoing research and development in new power electronic technologies including, but not limited to, solid-state power substations (SSPS), extreme fast charging (XFC), solid-state transformers, and multi-port power electronics that integrate multiple sources/loads will further increase penetration levels. To ensure stakeholders can integrate high penetration of power electronic technologies safely and reliably requires tools and methods to assess and evaluate their impact on the grid. Objectives: This report surveys, assesses, and analyzes commercially available and open-source tools that can support the assessment and evaluation of power electronics in future grids with high penetration levels. The study includes aspects that range from power flow analysis to dynamics evaluation (including hardware-in-the-loop – HIL testing) for such systems. The challenges and gaps associated with the current generation of toolsets available to assess the technical impact of introducing high penetration of power electronics are reported. The method is summarized in Figure ES-1.

Computational Modeling and Simulation for Nonproliferation: The History (and Present) of Monte Carlo and the MCNP(R) Code at Los Alamos [Slides]

The emergence of the Monte Carlo method as a research tool springs from work done at Los Alamos in the 1940s.Monte Carlo and the MCNP Code have been and continue to be developed at Los Alamos for many decades. From basic science in support of understanding nuclear interaction physics to global security applications, application uses of the code are extensive. Recent R&D projects and code modernization efforts make the MCNP code a great tool for nuclear nonproliferation applications. In collaboration with nuclear safeguards experts, new training has just recently been developed to help new practitioners learn how to use the code for nuclear safeguards applications.

Modeling and Simulation of MC-Small Design

In order to design a lightweight, highly portable neutron multiplicity counter for use in higher risk regions by mobile field teams, a redesign of the MC-15 is being performed, with the goal of producing a detector below 30 lbs for ease of transport. To achieve this, multiple MCNP® simulations were run, evaluating the number and positioning of the He-3 tubes in the detector as well as the amount of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) surrounding the tubes. Based on these simulations, the proposed redesign of the MC-15 (aka MC-Small) possesses 11 tubes and is 13 in wide, 3.21 in thick and 13 in tall. Including the changes to the positioning of the tubes and the removal of HDPE from less sensitive regions of the detectors (i.e. bases of tubes, back of detector), this resulted in an efficiency of 0.56% when measuring a bare Cf-252 source 19.69 in away, only 28% less efficient (relatively) than the MC-15 while weighing 18 lbs, 12 lbs less than the weight of the MC-15.

Advanced Modeling and Simulations for Evaluation of Thermal Neutron Scattering Materials [Slides]

In this presentation, researchers detail tradeoffs between two simulation suites for thermal neutron scattering data. OXLIMAX + MCViNE provide a more accurate elastic peak shape and NJOY + MCNP have more accurate spectra between phonon mode peaks (most likely due to multiple neutron scattering). Additionally, some outstanding issues with MCViNE are noted, including multiple neutron scattering and non-uniform (Q,E) grid for data.
