Crop status evaluations and yield predictions

A model was developed for predicting the day 50 percent of the wheat crop is planted in North Dakota. This model incorporates location as an independent variable. The Julian date when 50 percent of the crop was planted for the nine divisions of North Dakota for seven years was regressed on the 49 variables through the step-down multiple regression procedure. This procedure begins with all of the independent variables and sequentially removes variables that are below a predetermined level of significance after each step. The prediction equation was tested on daily data. The accuracy of the model is considered satisfactory for finding the historic dates on which to initiate yield prediction model. Growth prediction models were also developed for spring wheat.

Use of ERTS-1 DCS in the management and control of water resources systems

The ERTS-1 experimental hydrologic Data Collection Platform System that has been established at the New England Division (NED), the reasons for getting involved with the experiment, some of the initial problems associated with the data collection hardware, and a preliminary conclusion based on operating experiences are reviewed. The New England Region includes the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The entire area consists of approximately 97,000 sq. km. (60,000 square miles), half of which is in the state of Maine. The limits of the NED are all of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to the western limits of the Connecticut River basin, Massachusetts, Connecticut to the western edge of the Housatonic River basin and Rhode Island. All reservoirs have flood control as a primary purpose. Other uses include water supply, recreation and low flow augmentation. However, none of the reservoirs are presently operated for hydroelectric power, navigation, or irrigation purposes. Basically then, flood control regulation is NED's primary concern.

Technology application at Rockwell International

Technology diffusion at Rockwell International has progressed from the application of special skills to solve specific problems to the transfer of the required people and skills to allow the commercial divisions to solve their own problems and develop or improve their own products. Our prime effort is concentrated on commercial industrial applications. Rockwell's major emphasis on advanced technology utilization is directed through three operational modes, namely, transfer from technologically developed to underdeveloped organizations within the company; transfer between technologically developed organizations to form new operations within the company; and formation of high technology spin-off organizations beyond the corporate entity.

Distribution and size of elements of Saturn's rings as inferred from 12-cm radar observations

A 64m radar antenna was used to observe Saturn's rings at 12.6 cm wavelength, with reduced Doppler spread. The results show a positive radar return corresponding to about a 60 percent return from an isotropic scatterer with the projected area of the rings, allowing for the Cassini division. A radar spectrogram of the rings is shown with power density plotted against Doppler frequency shift.

Identification of human operator performance models utilizing time series analysis

The results of an effort performed by Sperry Systems Management Division for AMRL in applying time series analysis as a tool for modeling the human operator are presented. This technique is utilized for determining the variation of the human transfer function under various levels of stress. The human operator's model is determined based on actual input and output data from a tracking experiment.

The ERTS-1 investigation (ER-600): A compendium of analysis results of the utility of ERTS-1 data for land resources management

The results of the ERTS-1 investigations conducted by the Earth Observations Division at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center are summarized in this report, which is an overview of documents detailing individual investigations. Conventional image interpretation and computer-aided classification procedures were the two basic techniques used in analyzing the data for detecting, identifying, locating, and measuring surface features related to earth resources. Data from the ERTS-1 multispectral scanner system were useful for all applications studied, which included agriculture, coastal and estuarine analysis, forestry, range, land use and urban land use, and signature extension. Percentage classification accuracies are cited for the conventional and computer-aided techniques.

Parametric studies with an atmospheric diffusion model that assesses toxic fuel hazards due to the ground clouds generated by rocket launches

Parametric studies were made with a multilayer atmospheric diffusion model to place quantitative limits on the uncertainty of predicting ground-level toxic rocket-fuel concentrations. Exhaust distributions in the ground cloud, cloud stabilized geometry, atmospheric coefficients, the effects of exhaust plume afterburning of carbon monoxide CO, assumed surface mixing-layer division in the model, and model sensitivity to different meteorological regimes were studied. Large-scale differences in ground-level predictions are quantitatively described. Cloud alongwind growth for several meteorological conditions is shown to be in error because of incorrect application of previous diffusion theory. In addition, rocket-plume calculations indicate that almost all of the rocket-motor carbon monoxide is afterburned to carbon dioxide CO2, thus reducing toxic hazards due to CO. The afterburning is also shown to have a significant effect on cloud stabilization height and on ground-level concentrations of exhaust products.

On the variational equations for Householder transformations in feature selection

Results that suggest the possibility of using a sequential monotone process for solving the feature selection problem using Householder transformations are applied to the divergence separability criterion and an expression for the gradient of the divergence with respect to the generator of a single Householder transformation will be developed. This expression for the gradient is used in any number of differential correction schemes (iterators) that attempt to extremize the divergence. Data sets provided by the Earth Observations Division-JSC are used to demonstrate selecting the Householder transformations that generate the kxn matrix defining the best (in the sense of extremizing the divergence) k linear combinations of features. The tests allow initial comparisons to be made with results. In particular, this technique does not appear to require initial guesses for the iterator to be generated without replacement, exhaustive search, or other similar schemes.

Precise time and time interval (PTTI), an overview

Present applications of precise time and frequency (T/F) technology can be grouped as follows: (1) Communications systems which require T/F for time division multiplexing and for using spread spectrum techniques. (2) Navigation systems which need T/F for position fixing using a timed signal. (3) Scientific-Metrological applications which use T/F as the most precisely reproducible standard of measurement. (4) Astronomical-Space applications which cover a variety of the most demanding applications such as pulsar research, Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and laser/radar ranging. In particular, pulsar time-of-arrival measurements require submicrosecond precision over a period of one-half year referred to an extraterrestrial inertial system, and constitute the most stringent requirements for uniform timekeeping to date.
