Adaptive and learning control of large space structures

The paper describes the adaptive learning system for space operations which assumes that structural testing can be conducted during deployment and assembly. Simulation results using the solar electric propulsion array and a novel remote sensor are presented; they involve faster scan television coverage of the motions of the array from four cameras on the corners of the Space Shuttle payload bay. The description of the simulation, the filtering algorithm for processing the TV data, the parameter extraction algorithm, and the simulation results are presented.

Large Space Systems Technology, Part 2, 1981

Four major areas of interest are covered: technology pertinent to large antenna systems; technology related to the control of large space systems; basic technology concerning structures, materials, and analyses; and flight technology experiments. Large antenna systems and flight technology experiments are described. Design studies, structural testing results, and theoretical applications are presented with accompanying validation data. These research studies represent state-of-the art technology that is necessary for the development of large space systems. A total systems approach including structures, analyses, controls, and antennas is presented as a cohesive, programmatic plan for large space systems.

System data communication structures for active-control transport aircraft, volume 1

Candidate data communication techniques are identified, including dedicated links, local buses, broadcast buses, multiplex buses, and mesh networks. The design methodology for mesh networks is then discussed, including network topology and node architecture. Several concepts of power distribution are reviewed, including current limiting and mesh networks for power. The technology issues of packaging, transmission media, and lightning are addressed, and, finally, the analysis tools developed to aid in the communication design process are described. There are special tools to analyze the reliability and connectivity of networks and more general reliability analysis tools for all types of systems.

Large space structure model reduction and control system design based upon actuator and sensor influence functions

A model reduction procedure based on aggregation with respect to sensor and actuator influences rather than modes is presented for large systems of coupled second-order differential equations. Perturbation expressions which can predict the effects of spillover on both the aggregated and residual states are derived. These expressions lead to the development of control system design constraints which are sufficient to guarantee, to within the validity of the perturbations, that the residual states are not destabilized by control systems designed from the reduced model. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the application of the aggregation and control system design method.

Automation effects in a stereotypical multiloop manual control system

The increasing reliance of state-of-the art, high performance aircraft on high authority stability and command augmentation systems, in order to obtain satisfactory performance and handling qualities, has made critical the achievement of a better understanding of human capabilities, limitations, and preferences during interactions with complex dynamic systems that involve task allocation between man and machine. An analytical and experimental study has been undertaken to investigate human interaction with a simple, multiloop dynamic system in which human activity was systematically varied by changing the levels of automation. Task definition has led to a control loop structure which parallels that for any multiloop manual control system, and may therefore be considered a stereotype.

Stiffness Control of Large Space Structures

A technique for using internal force producing dual element/actuators for vibration suppression of large space structures is proposed. The method is applied to a low order system. Selective modal damping is achieved. The actuators used in this method may be electrically powered. The method is suitable for structures which are too slender or flimsy to permit the use of reaction jet-type actuators.

Analysis of optically controlled microwave/millimeter wave device structures

The light-induced voltage and the change in the source-to-drain channel current under optical illumination higher than the semiconductor bandgap for GaAs MESFET, InP MESFET, Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) and GaAs permeable base transistor (PBT) were analytically obtained. The GaAs PBT and GaAs MESFET have much higher sensitivity than InP MESFET. The Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs HEMT is observed to have the highest sensitivity. Variation in device parasitics due to optical illumination and its effect on the cutoff frequencies f sub T and f sub max are also investigated.

Structural analysis of the controlled impact demonstration of a jet transport airplane

An analytical method has been developed for assessing crash dynamics of large transport aircraft, such as in the NASA Controlled Impact Demonstration (CID) jet crash test on December 1, 1984. The DYCAST nonlinear finite-element computer code was used in a series of progressively more difficult tasks to model complete transport aircraft crashes. Single aircraft frames and fuselage section vertical drop tests were modeled and analyzed to obtain comparisons with experimental data and to develop hybrid element crash springs for use in the large CID model. Predictions of crash and acceleration levels from a symmetric CID model agreed well with data from the CID experiment.

Experimental studies of active members in control of large space structures

Intelligent structures for precision spacecraft applications are structural systems incorporating sensors, actuators, and built-in electronic logic that facilitate self-monitoring of structure responses to disturbances. Attention is presently given to adaptive structures, in which the electronic logic need not be integral to the structure. Active members are used to replace selected passive members of truss-type structures; the sensors employed allow measurement of the elastic strain and deformation experienced by the structure. Two struss-type testbed structures are described.
