Comment on the relation between the nonadiabatic coupling and the complex intersection of potential energy curves

Simple relations are discussed that provide a correspondence between the complex intersection of two potential surfaces and the nonadiabatic coupling matrix element between those surfaces. These are key quantities in semiclassical and quantum mechanical theories of collision induced electronic transitions. Within the two state approximation, the complex intersection is shown to be directly related to the location and magnitude of the peak in the nonadiabatic coupling. Two cases are considered: the avoided crossing between two potential surfaces; and the spin orbit interaction due to a P-2 halogen atom. Comparisons are made between the results of the two-state model and the results of ab initio quantum chemical calculations.

Monitoring complex trace-gas mixtures by long-path laser absorption spectrometry

Laser-based spectrophotometric methods, which have been proposed for the detection of trace concentrations of gaseous contaminants, include Raman and passive radiometry. The paper discusses a simple long-path laser absorption method which is capable of resolving complex mixtures of closely related trace contaminants at ppm levels. A number of species were selected which are most likely to accumulate in closed environments, such as submarines or long-duration manned space flights. Absorption coefficients at CO2 laser wavelengths were measured, accurate to + 3 per cent or better, for each of these species. This data base was then used to determine the presence and concentration of the contaminants in prepared mixtures of 12 to 15 gases. Computer programs have been developed which will permit a real-time analysis of the monitored atmosphere. Minimum detectable concentrations for individual species are generally in the ppm range, and are not seriously degraded by interferences even in complex mixtures. Estimates of the dynamic range of this monitoring technique for various system configurations and comparison with other methods of analysis are discussed

FCAP - A new tool for the performance and structural analysis for complex flexible aircraft with active control

A very general formulation has been developed for the analysis of complex flexible-aircraft configurations in presence of active control. The formulation is incorporated into a computer program, Flight Control Analysis Program (FCAP), which is designed in a modular fashion to incorporate aircraft dynamics and aerodynamics for complex configurations, as well as sensor, actuator and control logic element dynamics. Formulation of the total aircraft dynamic system is accomplished in matrix form by casting equations in state vector format. The system stability and performance are determined in either the frequency or time domain using classical analysis techniques. Fully unsteady aerodynamics is used for the evaluation of the flutter characteristics as well as the gust response of the aircraft.

A new method for predicting response in complex linear systems. II

The paper describes convergence and response studies in the low frequency range of complex systems, particularly with low values of damping of different distributions, and reports on the modification of the relaxation procedure required under these conditions. A new method is presented for response estimation in complex lumped parameter linear systems under random or deterministic steady state excitation. The essence of the method is the use of relaxation procedures with a suitable error function to find the estimated response; natural frequencies and normal modes are not computed. For a 45 degree of freedom system, and two relaxation procedures, convergence studies and frequency response estimates were performed. The low frequency studies are considered in the framework of earlier studies (Kayser and Bogdanoff, 1975) involving the mid to high frequency range.

Complex eigenvalue extraction in NASTRAN by the tridiagonal reduction (FEER) method

An extension of the Tridiagonal Reduction (FEER) method to complex eigenvalue analysis in NASTRAN is described. As in the case of real eigenvalue analysis, the eigensolutions closest to a selected point in the eigenspectrum are extracted from a reduced, symmetric, tridiagonal eigenmatrix whose order is much lower than that of the full size problem. The reduction process is effected automatically, and thus avoids the arbitrary lumping of masses and other physical quantities at selected grid points. The statement of the algebraic eigenvalue problem admits mass, damping and stiffness matrices which are unrestricted in character, i.e., they may be real, complex, symmetric or unsymmetric, singular or non-singular.

The far field diffraction pattern for corner reflectors with complex reflection coefficients

The far field diffraction pattern of a geometrically perfect corner reflector is examined analytically for normally incident monochromatic light. The states of polarization and the complex amplitudes of the emerging light are expressed through transformation matrices in terms of those of the original incident light for each sextant of the face in a single coordinate system. The analytic expression of the total diffraction pattern is obtained for a circular face. This expression consists of three component functions in addition to the basic Airy function. The coefficient of each function is expressed in terms of complex coefficients of reflectance of the reflecting surface. Some numerical results for different reflecting surfaces, including total internal reflection, are presented. The iso-intensity contours of the diffraction pattern evaluated from the analytical expressions for an uncoated solid corner reflector are also presented along with the photographs of the pattern.

Calculation of transonic potential flowfields about complex, three-dimensional configurations

Methods for extending iterative, finite-difference calculations of transonic potential flowfields to complex three-dimensional configurations are discussed. One particularly attractive approach is to use relatively simple conformal mappings in combination with shearing transformations to generate computational domains that are nearly-conformally mapped from the physical space in one family of coordinate surfaces, and which map the complex boundaries to grid surfaces. The application of such a method to a general wing-body combination or to a multi-bladed fan is discussed. A transformation to map the wing-fuselage or fan-hub combination to a convenient computational domain is proposed. The transformation is useful in its own right for treating the two-dimensional problems of flow past a profile in a wind tunnel or through a cascade. Some results of preliminary calculations are presented.

Development of a complex of activity in the solar corona

Using Skylab observations of soft solar X-rays, the development of a complex of activity in the solar corona during its whole lifetime of seven solar rotations is studied. The basic components of the activity complex were determined to be permanently interconnected through sets of magnetic field lines, which suggests similar connections also below the photosphere. The visibility of individual loops in these connections, however, was greatly variable and typically shorter than one day. Each brightening of a coronal loop in X-rays seems to be related to a variation in the photospheric magnetic field near its footprint.

NASCAP, a three-dimensional Charging Analyzer Program for complex spacecraft

A computer code, NASCAP (NASA Charging Analyzer Program), has been developed by Systems, Science and Software under contract to NASA-LeRC to simulate the charging of a complex spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit. The capabilities of the NASCAP code include a fully three-dimensional solution of Poisson's equation about an object having considerable geometrical and material complexity, particle tracking, shadowing in sunlight, calculation of secondary emission, backscatter and photoemission, and graphical output. A model calculation shows how the NASCAP code may be used to improve our understanding of the spacecraft-plasma interaction.

Quantitative comparison of combined gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric profiles of complex mixtures

The paper describes a method called HISLIB for automatic quantitative comparison of gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) results obtained on complex mixtures of organic compounds. The method is based on comparing new mixtures to 'historical' libraries of previous results. Co-occurrence of components is determined by matching relative retention indices (RRIs) and mass spectra after background removal and resolution of overlapping GC components. Internal standards are used to quantify the relative concentrations of components. Applications of HISLIB include validation of analytical procedures to isolate complex mixtures; development of historical libraries which might include complete summaries of all past observations, compilations of controls, or any other selected subset of results; improvement of the quality of existing libraries of mass spectral data; and detection of differences in kind and/or amounts of individual components. Limitations of the method are mentioned along with causes of their occurrence.

Fuel cell on-site integrated energy system parametric analysis of a residential complex

The use of phosphoric acid fuel cell powerplant to provide all the electricity required by an 81-unit garden apartment complex is studied. Byproduct heat is recovered and provides some of the heat required by the complex. The onsite integrated energy system contains energy conversion equipment including combinations of compression and absorption chillers, heat pumps, electric resistance heaters, and thermal storage. The annual fuel requirement for several onsite integrated energy systems as well as the fuel cell breakeven cost for one specific system were calculated. It is found that electrical efficiency cannot be traded off against thermal efficiency without paying a penalty in system efficiency.

The synthesis of complex molecules in interstellar clouds

The abundances of polyatomic molecules that may be formed by CH3(+) radiative association reactions in dense interstellar molecular clouds are reevaluated. The formation of a number of complex interstellar molecules via radiative association reactions involving ionic precursors other than CH3(+) is also investigated; these additional precursors include CH3O(+), CH3CO(+), CH5(+), HCO(+), NO(+), H2CN(+), C2H2(+), and NH3(+). The results indicate that the postulated gas-phase ion-molecule radiative association reactions could potentially explain the synthesis of most of the more complex species observed in dense molecular clouds such as Sgr B2. It is concluded, however, that in order to be conclusive, laboratory data are needed to show whether or not these reactions proceed at the required rates at low temperatures.

The effects of adrenalectomy and corticsteroid injection on the fibrinolytic activity of complex heparin compounds in the blood during immobilization

Total non-enzymatic fibrinolytic activity in the blood of rats increased three times in response to stress caused by 30 minute immobilization, and the activity of epinephrine-heparin complex increased nine times. In adrenalectomized animals, which showed a weak response to the same stress, intraperitoneal injection of hydrocortisone 30 minutes prior to immobilization normalized the response. Obtained results indicate that adrenalectomy leads to sharp reduction of heparin complexing with thromogenic proteins and epinephrine, while substitution therapy with hydrocortisone restores anticoagulation system function.
