Solar activity prediction of sunspot numbers (verification). Predicted solar radio flux; predicted geomagnetic indices Ap and Kp

Efforts to further verify a previously reported technique for predicting monthly sunspot numbers over a period of years (1979 to 1989) involved the application of the technique over the period for the maximum epoch of solar cycle 19. Results obtained are presented. Methods and results for predicting solar flux (F10.7 cm) based on flux/sunspot number models, ascent and descent, and geomagnetic activity indices as a function of sunspot number and solar cycle phase classes are included.

Satellite power system (SPS) concept definition study. Volume 3: Experimental verification definition

An evolutionary Satellite Power Systems development plan was prepared. Planning analysis was directed toward the evolution of a scenario that met the stated objectives, was technically possible and economically attractive, and took into account constraining considerations, such as requirements for very large scale end-to-end demonstration in a compressed time frame, the relative cost/technical merits of ground testing versus space testing, and the need for large mass flow capability to low Earth orbit and geosynchronous orbit at reasonable cost per pound.

In situ aircraft verification of the quality of satellite cloud winds over oceanic regions

A 5-year aircraft experiment to verify the quality of satellite cloud winds over oceans using in situ aircraft Inertial Navigation System wind measurements is presented. Cloud motions measured by satellite and aircraft wind measurements that were coincident in time and space, and the results from the experiment are for undisturbed to moderately disturbed oceanic weather regimes. The results show that satellite measured cumulus cloud motions are good estimators of the cloud-base wind for trade wind and subtropical high regions. The average magnitude of the vector differences between the cloud motion and the cloud-base wind was determined; for cumulus clouds near frontal regions, the cloud motions agreed best with the mean cloud layer wind. For a very limited sample, cirrus cloud motions most closely followed the mean wind in the cloud layer.

A seasonal verification of the Suits spectral reflectance model for wheat

Variables that characterize wheat canopies for the Suits Model and spectral bidirectional reflectance measurements in the 450 to 1350 nm interval were determined approximately weekly throughout the growing season for two cultivars of wheat that achieved maximum leaf area index of 5.3 and 10.8. The Suits Model plant variables were tabulated and experimental reflectance measurements were compared with the model predictions in the wavelength interval from 500 to 1150 nm at 50 nm increments for 17 measurement dates. The seasonal average coefficient of determination, r squared, was 0.88 between the Suits spectral bidirectional reflectance model and field-measured reflectance data. Poorest agreement was found very early and very late in the growing season, possibly due to low green plant biomass and incomplete ground cover.

Viking relativity experiment - Verification of signal retardation by solar gravity

Analysis of 14 months of data obtained from radio ranging to the Viking spacecraft verified, to an estimated accuracy of 0.1%, the prediction of the general theory of relativity that the round-trip times of light signals traveling between the earth and Mars are increased by the direct effect of solar gravity. The corresponding value for the metric parameter gamma is 1.000 plus or minus 0.002, where the quoted uncertainty, twice the formal standard deviation, allows for possible systematic errors.

Experimental verification of propeller noise prediction

Results of experimental measurements of the sound fields of 1/4-scale general aviation propellers are presented and experimental wake surveys and pressure signatures obtained are compared with theoretical predictions. Experiments were performed primarily on a 1C160 propeller model mounted in front of a symmetric body in an anechoic wind tunnel, and measured the thrust and torque produced by propeller at different rotation speeds and tunnel velocities, wakes at three axial distances, and sound pressure at various azimuths and tip speeds with advance ratio or tunnel velocity constant. Aerodynamic calculations of blade loading were performed using airfoil section characteristics and a modified strip analysis procedure. The propeller was then modeled as an array of point sound sources with each point characterized by the force and volume of the corresponding propeller section in order to obtain the acoustic characteristics. Measurements are found to agree with predictions over a wide range of operating conditions, tip speeds and propeller nacelle combinations, without the use of adjustable constants.

Genesis of breath sounds-Preliminary verification of theory

Experimental results are presented which tend to validate a previously developed theory of sound production in the human lung over a particular Reynolds number range. In addition, a new, presently nonunderstood, phenomenon was observed at higher Reynolds number. These results, which show how sound generation in the lung depends upon the physiologically important variables of volume flow rate and bronchial diameter, have potentially important application in noninvasive lung examination and the diagnosis of lung disease.

Evaluation of results of US corn and soybeans exploratory experiment: Classification procedures verification test

The classification procedure utilized in making crop proportion estimates for corn and soybeans using remotely sensed data was evaluated. The procedure was derived during the transition year of the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment. Analysis of variance techniques were applied to classifications performed by 3 groups of analysts who processed 25 segments selected from 4 agrophysical units (APU's). Group and APU effects were assessed to determine factors which affected the quality of the classifications. The classification results were studied to determine the effectiveness of the procedure in producing corn and soybeans proportion estimates.

The reduction, verification and interpretation of Magsat magnetic data over Canada

The primary concern of this investigation is to detect and study variations in the magnetic field originating in the solid Earth, as measured by Magsat. Most of this field originates in the core, but an important part of the field is of lithospheric origin. Magnetic anomalies of lithospheric origin are weak at Magsat altitudes (20 to 30 nT at most), and they can easily be masked by much larger effects caused by field aligned and other currents at high latitudes. Most of Canada lies under the influence of ionospheric currents in the auroral zone and polar cap. Therefore, before Magsat data had become available, but after the October 30, 1979 launch, criteria were developed for selecting times when subsets of potentially usable Magsat data could be expected. Subsequently, as Magsat data became available, these critieria were applied.

Retrofit and verification test of a 30-cm ion thruster

Twenty modifications were found to be necessary and were approved by design review. These design modifications were incorporated in the thruster documents (drawings and procedures) to define the J series thruster. Sixteen of the design revisions were implemented in a 900 series thruster by retrofit modification. A standardized set of test procedures was formulated, and the retrofit J series thruster design was verified by test. Some difficulty was observed with the modification to the ion optics assembly, but the overall effect of the design modification satisfies the design objectives. The thruster was tested over a wide range of operating parameters to demonstrate its capabilities.

Thermal Pollution Math Model. Volume 1. Thermal Pollution Model Package Verification and Transfer

Two three dimensional, time dependent models, one free surface, the other rigid lid, were verified at Anclote Anchorage and Lake Keowee respectively. The first site is a coastal site in northern Florida; the other is a man-made lake in South Carolina. These models describe the dispersion of heated discharges from power plants under the action of ambient conditions. A one dimensional, horizontally-averaged model was also developed and verified at Lake Keowee. The data base consisted of archival in situ measurements and data collected during field missions. The field missions were conducted during winter and summer conditions at each site. Each mission consisted of four infrared scanner flights with supporting ground truth and in situ measurements. At Anclote, special care was taken to characterize the complete tidal cycle. The three dimensional model results compared with IR data for thermal plumes on an average within 1 C root mean square difference. The one dimensional model performed satisfactorily in simulating the 1971-1979 period.

Thermal Pollution Mathematical Model: Verification of One-Dimensional Numerical Model at Lake Keowee - Volume 2

A one dimensional model for studying the thermal dynamics of cooling lakes was developed and verified. The model is essentially a set of partial differential equations which are solved by finite difference methods. The model includes the effects of variation of area with depth, surface heating due to solar radiation absorbed at the upper layer, and internal heating due to the transmission of solar radiation to the sub-surface layers. The exchange of mechanical energy between the lake and the atmosphere is included through the coupling of thermal diffusivity and wind speed. The effects of discharge and intake by power plants are also included. The numerical model was calibrated by applying it to Cayuga Lake. The model was then verified through a long term simulation using Lake Keowee data base. The comparison between measured and predicted vertical temperature profiles for the nine years is good. The physical limnology of Lake Keowee is presented through a set of graphical representations of the measured data base.

Thermal Pollution Mathematical Model: Verification of Three-Dimensional Free-Surface Model at Anclote Anchorage - Volume 6

The free-surface model presented is for tidal estuaries and coastal regions where ambient tidal forces play an important role in the dispersal of heated water. The model is time dependent, three dimensional, and can handle irregular bottom topography. The vertical stretching coordinate is adopted for better treatment of kinematic condition at the water surface. The results include surface elevation, velocity, and temperature. The model was verified at the Anclote Anchorage site of Florida Power Company. Two data bases at four tidal stages for winter and summer conditions were used to verify the model. Differences between measured and predicted temperatures are on an average of less than 1 C.

Evaluation and verification of epitaxial process sequence for silicon solar-cell production

Several process sequences are shown to be of potentially low cost and to perform effectively when applied to the high quality silicon crystals for which they were developed. The extent to which such process sequences can also perform effectively when applied to lower cost thin film solar cells formed by epitaxial deposition of Si on potentially inexpensive substrates of upgraded metallurgical grade Si was investigated.
