Autonomous Energy Systems: A Distributed Approach to Control Millions of Energy Devices

Energy systems of all sizes are becoming increasingly complex. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has developed new controls that will support real-time operations and management of renewables, storage, electric vehicles and loads for grid efficiency and resilience. This fact sheet presents an overview of these autonomous energy systems.

Method and apparatus for maintaining data coherence in a non-uniform compute device

A data processing apparatus includes one or more host processors with first processing units, one or more caches with second processing unit, a non-cache memory having a third processing unit and a reorder buffer operable to maintain data order during execution of a program of instructions. An instruction scheduler routes instructions to the processing units. Data coherence is maintained by control logic that blocks access to data locations in use by a selected processing unit other than the selected processing unit until data associated with the data locations are released from the reorder buffer. Data stored in the cache is written to the memory if it is already in a modified state, otherwise the state is set to the modified state. A memory controller may be used to restrict access to memory locations to be operated on.

Comfort units and systems, methods, and devices for use thereof

Despite otherwise uncomfortable conditions in a surrounding environment, a customizable microenvironment can be created around a user to maintain a comfortable temperature and/or humidity level using a comfort unit. For example, the environment may be an office building where conditions are out of the comfortable range to save on energy or for other reasons, a factory/shop environment that is poorly conditioned, or an outdoor location with little to no conditioning. A sensing unit can monitor biometric and environmental data and can determine a comfort level of the user. The comfort unit can then dynamically respond to the determined comfort level and adjust the microenvironment to improve the user's comfort level. The comfort unit can follow the user as the user moves within the macro-environment, or can otherwise move within the macro-environment to achieve certain functions, such as recharging or spatial shifting of thermal load within the overall macro-environment.

Fabrication of stable electrode/diffusion barrier layers for thermoelectric filled skutterudite devices

Disclosed are methods for the manufacture of n-type and p-type filled skutterudite thermoelectric legs of an electrical contact. A first material of CoSi2 and a dopant are ball-milled to form a first powder which is thermo-mechanically processed with a second powder of n-type skutterudite to form a n-type skutterudite layer disposed between a first layer and a third layer of the doped-CoSi2. In addition, a plurality of components such as iron, and nickel, and at least one of cobalt or chromium are ball-milled form a first powder that is thermo-mechanically processed with a p-type skutterudite layer to form a p-type skutterudite layer “second layer” disposed between a first and a third layer of the first powder. The specific contact resistance between the first layer and the skutterudite layer for both the n-type and the p-type skutterudites subsequent to hot-pressing is less than about 10.0 μΩ·cm2.

Device and method for constructing and displaying high quality images from imaging data by transforming a data structure utilizing machine learning techniques

Constructing a computer image from raw imaging data or encoded imaging data by transforming a first data structure in which the raw imaging data or the encoded imaging data is stored into a second data structure storing reorganized imaging data. The raw imaging data or the encoded imaging data is received, stored in the first data structure. The computer reorganizes the raw imaging data or the encoded imaging data into the reorganized data and stores the reorganized data in the second data structure, which is a multi-dimensional array having subarrays containing local information needed by a convolutional neural network for processing the reorganized data. Other portions of the multi-dimensional array store other portions of the raw imaging data or the encoded imaging data. The computer also processes the reorganized data using the convolutional neural network to construct the image, whereby a constructed image is formed.

Carbon Nanotubes: Applications to Energy Storage Devices

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are an extraordinary discovery in the area of science and technology. Engineering them properly holds the promise of opening new avenues for future development of many other materials for diverse applications. Carbon nanotubes have open structure and enriched chirality, which enable improvements the properties and performances of other materials when CNTs are incorporated in them. Energy storage systems have been using carbon nanotubes either as an additive to improve electronic conductivity of cathode materials or as an active anode component depending upon structural and morphological specifications. Furthermore, they have also been used directly as the electrode material in supercapacitors and fuel cells. Therefore, CNTs demand a huge importance due to their underlying properties and prospective applications in the energy storage research fields. There are different kinds of carbon nanotubes which have been successfully used in batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and other energy storage systems. This chapter focuses on the role of CNTs in the different energy storage and conversion systems and impact of their structure and morphology on the electrochemical performances and storage mechanisms.
