Reducing the Risk of Airborne Contamination through Intelligent Container Surveillance

DOE Manual 441.1-1 provides a set of performance criteria that nuclear material storage containers must achieve to provide protection to the worker, public, and environment. At Los Alamos National Laboratory, the SAVY-4000 is the container of choice for nuclear material storage, meeting all Manual requirements. At the outset, polymer components of the SAVY 4000 were considered to be life-limiting components due to their performance degradation resulting from radiation exposure. However, recent annual surveillance results revealed another life-limiting phenomenon for the container: a deterioration of the package integrity through corrosion of the stainless steel components, primarily the body. Container surveillance remains the choice method of observing, measuring, and tracking container health in service.

Parylene-N Coatings of Thin Foils for the Mitigation of Neutral Contaminant Desorption and Plasma Formation

Previous experiments utilizing the planar MITL foil platform (T.J. Smith et al. RSI 2021) on the 1-MA, 100-ns Mykonos facility have shown neutral atomic and molecular hydrogen in the gap after rapid heating of the foil surfaces before breakdown. Additionally, previous attempts at using parylene-N as a coating for power flow surfaces on the 1-MA, 100-ns Zebra facility have shown tamping of the electrothermal instability at thicknesses of 50-60 μm (T.M. Hutchinson et al. Phys. Rev. E 2018).

Analysis of Radioactive Waste and Contamination using 3D Position-Sensitive CdZnTe Detectors

INTRODUCTION The US has surplus plutonium. This material will be diluted in gloveboxes at SRS [Ref 1 and 2]. This process will create holdup. Holdup is material in an unexpected or unwanted location. Because this holdup material is primarily PuO2, it must be accounted for (measured). This measurement is typically done using a liquid-nitrogen cooled, HPGe detector. To enable more rapid processing, advanced holdup technologies are being explored [Ref 3 and 4]. METHODS For the surplus plutonium dilute and dispose program, the traditional detector system could slow down the optimal operational tempo of the program. A multiple-detector system, providing complete glovebox coverage, based on CdZnTe crystals, 3D-positioning electronics, and a coded aperture mask, is in the process of being developed by ORNL and SRNL [Ref 4].

KBase Narrative - Supplemental Data for "Mixed waste contamination selects for a mobile genetic element population enriched in multiple heavy metal resistance genes"

Here we provide the complete set of circular elements produced by SCAPP from metagenomic data that may represent mobile genetic elements (MGEs). For the publication, these sequences were de-replicated within the high [U] and low [U] sample sets. Additionally, 98 of the circular elements were removed for downstream analysis due to high suspicion of being (1) chloroplast or mitochondrial sequences or (2) erroneously circularized long repeat regions. The complete list of circular elements used for the analysis along with metadata can be found in Tables S5 and S6.

Earth Abundant Oxidation Catalysts for Removal of Contaminants of Emerging Concern from Wastewater: Homogeneous Catalytic Screening of Monomeric Complexes

Twenty novel Mn, Fe, and Cu complexes of ethylene cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycles with potentially copolymerizable allyl and benzyl pendant arms were synthesized and characterized. Multiple X-ray crystal structures demonstrate the cis-folded pseudo-octahedral geometry forced by the rigidifying ethylene cross-bridge and show that two cis coordination cites are available for interaction with substrate and oxidant. The Cu complexes were used to determine kinetic stability under harsh acidic and high-temperature conditions, which revealed that the cyclam-based ligands provide superior stabilization with half-lives of many minutes or even hours in 5 M HCl at 50–90 °C. Cyclic voltammetry studies of the Fe and Mn complexes reveal reversible redox processes indicating stabilization of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ oxidation states, indicating the likelihood of catalytic oxidation for these complexes. Finally, dye-bleaching experiments with methylene blue, methyl orange, and rhodamine B demonstrate efficient catalytic decolorization and allow selection of the most successful monomeric catalysts for copolymerization to produce future heterogeneous water purification materials.
