Log-Correlated Large-Deviation Statistics Governing Huygens Fronts in Turbulence

Analyses have disagreed on whether the velocity u T of bulk advancement of a Huygens front in turbulence vanishes or remains finite in the limit of vanishing local front propagation speed u 0 . Here, a connection to the large-deviation statistics of log-correlated random processes enables a definitive determination of the correct small- u 0 asymptotics. This result reconciles several theoretical and phenomenological perspectives with the conclusion that u T remains finite for vanishing u 0 , which implies a propagation anomaly akin to the energy-dissipation anomaly in the limit of vanishing viscosity. Various leading-order structural properties such as a novel u 0 dependence of a bulk length scale associated with front geometry are predicted in this limit. As a result, the analysis involves a formal analogy to random advection of diffusive scalars.

Nonlinear Fluctuating Hydrodynamics for the Classical XXZ Spin Chain

Using the framework of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics (NFH), we examine equilibrium spatio-temporal correlations in classical ferromagnetic spin chains with nearest neighbor interactions. In particular, we consider the classical XXZ-Heisenberg spin chain (also known as Lattice Landau–Lifshitz or LLL model) evolving deterministically and chaotically via Hamiltonian dynamics, for which energy and z-magnetization are the only locally conserved fields. For the easy-plane case, this system has a low-temperature regime in which the difference between neighboring spin’s angular orientations in the XY plane is an almost conserved field. According to the predictions of NFH, the dynamic correlations in this regime exhibit a heat peak and propagating sound peaks, all with anomalous broadening. We present a detailed molecular dynamics test of these predictions and find a reasonably accurate verification. Additionally, we find that, in a suitable intermediate temperature regime, the system shows two sound peaks with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling and a heat peak where the expected anomalous broadening is less clear. In high temperature regimes of both easy plane and easy axis case of LLL, our numerics show clear diffusive spin and energy peaks and absence of any sound modes, as one would expect. We also simulate an integrable version of the XXZ-model, for which the ballistic component instead moves with a broad range of speeds rather than being concentrated in narrower peaks around the sound speed.

Algebras of Projectors and Mutually Unbiased Bases in Dimension 7

We apply methods of the representation theory, combinatorial algebra, and noncommutative geometry to various problems of quantum tomography. We introduce the algebra of projectors that satisfy a certain commutation relation, examine this relation by combinatorial methods, and develop the representation theory of this algebra. We also present a geometrical interpretation of our problem and apply the results obtained to the description of the Petrescu family of mutually unbiased bases in dimension 7.

Some Mathematical Problems of Control of Quantum Systems

Currently, quantum technologies are actively developing; these technologies are based on quantum effects in individual quantum systems—atoms or molecules. The mathematical study of problems of control of quantum systems is of particular importance. In this paper, we consider certain problems associated with control of quantum systems: extrema of target functionals for population transfer problems and generation of unitary processes and incoherent control and generation of arbitrary density matrices for open quantum systems.

Symmetry-breaking-induced rare fluctuations in a time-delay dynamic system

Inspired by the experimental and numerical findings, we study the dynamic instabilities of two coupled nonlinear delay differential equations that are used to describe the coherent oscillations between the top and bottom boundary layers in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection. By introducing two sensitivity parameters for the instabilities of the top and bottom boundary layers, we find three different types of solutions, namely in-phase single-period oscillations, multi-period oscillations and chaos. The chaos solution contains rare but large amplitude fluctuations. The statistical properties of these fluctuations are consistent with those observed in the experiment for the massive eruption of thermal plumes, which causes random reversals of the large-scale circulation in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection. Finally, our study thus provides new insights into the origin of rare massive eruptions and sudden changes of large-scale flow pattern that are often observed in convection systems of geophysical and astrophysical scales.

Approximating the linear response of physical chaos

Abstract Parametric derivatives of statistics are highly desired quantities in prediction, design optimization and uncertainty quantification. In the presence of chaos, the rigorous computation of these quantities is certainly possible, but mathematically complicated and computationally expensive. Based on Ruelle’s formalism, this paper shows that the sophisticated linear response algorithm can be dramatically simplified in higher-dimensional systems featuring statistical homogeneity in the physical space. We argue that the contribution of the SRB (Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen) measure gradient, which is an integral yet the most cumbersome part of the full algorithm, is negligible if the objective function is appropriately aligned with unstable manifolds. This abstract condition could potentially be satisfied by a vast family of real-world chaotic systems, regardless of the physical meaning and mathematical form of the objective function and perturbed parameter. We demonstrate several numerical examples that support these conclusions and that present the use and performance of a simplified linear response algorithm. In the numerical experiments, we consider physical models described by differential equations, including Lorenz 96 and Kuramoto–Sivashinsky.

Graphene-based tunable dual-band absorbers by ribbon/disk array

This article presents two dual-band absorbers based on graphene one-dimensional (1D)/two-dimensional (2D) patterned arrays in the THz frequencies. In comparison to the previous work, the structure of the proposed device is very simple. Most of the dual-band absorbers are made by the combined resonances of the resonators with various sizes within the structure. In this paper, the proposed absorber is based on the arrays of one element. The graphene patterned arrays have dual capacitive-inductive nature. The circuit model of graphene patterned appears as the infinite number of parallel R–L–C circuits, each representing a single resonant mode. In this paper, the fundamental resonant mode of graphene patterned array is excited at both resonant bands. The impedance matching and resonance conditions are used to achieve two resonance bands with perfect absorption.

Nonautonomous complex wave solutions for the (2+1)-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain equation with variable coefficients

This paper studies the (2+1)-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain equation with variable coefficients (2D-VcHFSCE), which describes the Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chains’s nonlinear spin dynamics with bilinear and anisotropic interactions in the semiclassical limit. Nonautonomous complex wave solutions are obtained such as similarity, bright and dark soliton solutions. Furthermore, analytic solutions are also presented based on the G{sup ′}/G-expansion method. The propagation properties of the obtained solutions are shown by some 3D- and contour plots.

Modified D-shaped SPR PCF polarization filter at telecommunication wavelengths

A compact surface plasmon photonic crystal fiber (PCF) polarization filter is proposed and analyzed at the two communication windows of 1.3 and 1.52 µm. The y-polarized mode can be filtered out at wavelength of 1.3 µm while the x-polarized mode can be excluded at λ = 1.52 µm using the same design. The effects of the geometrical parameters of the PCF on the polarization filter performance are studied by full vectorial finite element method. The numerical simulations reveal that the suggested polarization filter with a compact device length of 23 µm can achieve good crosstalk (CT) of − 46.4 and − 41.2 dB at the communication wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.52 µm, respectively. Further, bandwidths of 45 nm and 110 nm can be obtained around λ = 1.3 µm and 1.52 µm, respectively where the CT is better than − 20 dB. Therefore, the reported design has advantages in terms of low crosstalk, large bandwidth, short device length and multi-functionality.

Improvement of the performance parameters of the surface plasmon resonance biosensor using Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} and WS{sub 2}

Here, proposed Kretschmann configuration based surface plasmon resonance biosensor shows immense improvement in its performance parameters. This highly sensitive biosensor provides a higher value of quality factor and detection accuracy. We presented a five-layer model of a biosensor with two dimensional transition metal di-chalcogenides Tungsten disulfide (WS2) in addition with Al2O3 layer. By using one layer of WS2 with six layers of Al2O3, the highest sensitivity (227.5 °/RIU), detection accuracy (1.1123), and quality factor (28.26 RIU{sup −1}) can be achieved. CaF2 as coupling prism has also played a remarkable role in enhancing the performance parameters for its low refractive index.

Spectral reflectance reconstruction with the locally weighted linear model

Spectral reflectance reconstruction by the local linear model has many advantages such as simple model structure, fast calculation speed and less chance to be over-fitting. However, local linear model often suffers from the outliers and prone to be under-fitting. In this paper, we propose a locally weighted linear model for spectral reflectance reconstruction. It improves the contribution of the local neighbors with higher similarity to the test point, which can reduce the influence of noisy points and redundant points. Experimental results show that the locally weighted linear model can effectively reduce the reconstruction error.

Near-circularly polarized isolated attosecond pulse generation from coherent superposition state by a circularly polarized laser field

We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from a coherent superposition state of hydrogen atom in a circularly polarized (CP) laser field. The results show that, driven by the CP field, HHG from the coherent superposition state is enhanced by 4 to 5 orders of magnitude compared to that from the ground state. The enhanced intensity is comparable to that of the ground state in a linearly polarized laser field. Based on the classical and quantum analyses, we demonstrate that HHG in the CP laser field mainly arises from the recombination of electrons ionized at non-zero initial positions. The enhancement of HHG from the coherent superposition state is due to the higher ionization rate and also the larger probability density of electrons located far from the nucleus of the involved excited state. The obtained harmonic spectra support the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) with the ellipticity as high as 0.93. Moreover, we show that the generation of IAPs with large ellipticity is robust against the variation of the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of the laser field. Our results provide a new route toward generating near-CP IAPs, which will be beneficial for ultrafast detection of chiral-sensitive light-matter interactions.

Generalized optical soliton solutions to the (3+1)-dimensional resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Kerr and parabolic law nonlinearities

The resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation in three dimensions featuring both the Kerr and parabolic law nonlinearities has been considered in this paper due to its vital role in the propagation of solitons in optical fibers. Optical soliton solutions to this important model consisting of dark, singular and combo solitons alongside various periodic solutions that are new and more general to the lately devised solutions have been presented. We also reported the constraint conditions that guarantee the survival of these solitons and depicted certain results.

Theoretical and experimental analysis of bidirectionally pumped 1.3 μm Pr{sup 3+}-doped ASE source

We have analyzed the characteristics of 1.3 μm praseodymium (Pr{sup 3+}) doped bidirectionally pumped double pass (BIP-DP) configuration amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source theoretically and experimentally. The source’s simulation model was established and corresponding simulated results were given. The effects of pump ratio, Pr{sup 3+}-doped fiber (PDF) length, total pump power and source’s optical losses were researched. The output power of BIP-DP ASE source is mainly affected by the total pump power, PDF length and source’s optical losses, while it has little relationship with the pump ratio. The BIP-DP ASE source operating at the symmetric bi-directional pump condition was constructed experimentally. The acquired output power of more than 5 mW has been obtained experimentally, which was with the quasi-gaussian output spectrum, and its 3 dB bandwidth is ~ 20 nm.

The method of transition boundary for the solution of diffraction problems

A new method, which enables one to solve some diffraction problems, is put forth. The technique is based on a relation between the diffracted and scattered geometric optics waves at the transition boundaries. The concept of initial waves is also used instead of the incident field. The general algorithm of the method is outlined and applied to the diffraction problems of waves by perfect electric conductor half-screen, resistive half-plane and impedance sheet junction.

Passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser using quantum dots CdSe embedded in polymer film as saturable absorber

We demonstrate a passively Q-switched erbium doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on quantum dots (QD) CdSe as a saturable absorber (SA). The synthesized CdSe powder was embedded into a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using emulsion polymerization process. The film is sandwiched between two fiber connector via an adapter to form a fiber-compatible SA device. By integrating the SA device into the EDFL ring cavity, the stable Q-switched operation is achieved at 1559.35 nm as the pump power is varied within 30–118 mW. The laser has a pump threshold of 20.4 mW. The pulse repetition rate shows an increasing trend from 33.2 to 68.45 kHz, whereas the pulse width exhibits a decreasing trend from 10.04 to 4.30 μs as the pump power is increased from 30 to 118 mW. The highest pulse energy of 11.83 nJ is obtained at a pump power of 118 mW. These results indicate that QD CdSe is a promising SA for Q-switching laser operation.
