Corrosion of Rare-Earth Disilicate Environmental Barrier Coatings in Gas Turbine Environments—Part 2: Microstructure Model

A model for the volatization of ytterbium disilicate (YbDS) by water vapor is developed. The new model is based on the Deal & Grove theory of the thermal oxidation of silicon [1], generalized here to account for the multi-step, second-order chemical reactions for silica depletion, multi-component mixture effects, and the unsteady porous microstructural evolution of the corroded inner zone. With the new model, the fundamental kinetic rate and standard porous media parameters are determined using the atmospheric steam jet impingement experiment of Ridley & Opila [2] and compared to results from the original Deal & Grove model. Fixing the input parameters in each respective model, a validation study (blind prediction) is presented for the high Reynolds number (1 × 105) and high pressure (14.7 atm) burner rig experiment of Wan et al. [3].

Characterizing Corrosion Mechanisms Of Structural Alloys In Actinide-based Molten Chloride Salt

This is a dataset consisting of 33 GB of .png image files, each featuring a two-dimensional distribution of different element species captured an individual slice of the specimen, and .ang files that capture microstructural information captured from each respective slice using a technique called electron backscatter diffraction. The .ang files can be processed to visualize alloy grains captured in a respective slice.

Distributed fiber sensor and machine learning data analytics for pipeline protection against extrinsic intrusions and intrinsic corrosions

This paper presents an integrated technical framework to protect pipelines against both malicious intrusions and piping degradation using a distributed fiber sensing technology and artificial intelligence. A distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) was used to detect acoustic wave propagation and scattering along pipeline structures consisting of straight piping and sharp bend elbow. Signal to noise ratio of the DAS system was enhanced by femtosecond induced artificial Rayleigh scattering centers. Data harnessed by the DAS system were analyzed by neural network-based machine learning algorithms. The system identified with over 85% accuracy in various external impact events, and over 94% accuracy for defect identification through supervised learning and 71% accuracy through unsupervised learning.

Analysis of Tank 38H (HTF-38-20-7, -8) and tank 43H (HTF-43-20-9, -10) samples for Support of the Enrichment Control and Corrosion Control Programs

SRNL analyzed samples from Tank 38H and Tank 43H to support ECP and CCP. The results indicate the concentrations of most species in the Tank 38H surface sample decreased significantly from the previous surface sample. The Tank 38H sub-surface sample shows only small changes in concentration for most major species in the solution from the previous sample. The large differences in the concentrations of major components between the Tank 38H surface and sub-surface samples indicate significant stratification of solution species within the tank. The Tank 38H sub-surface sample contained a small amount of sludge solids (<1 wt%).

Engineering scale molten salt corrosion and chemistry code development

A new engineering scale transport code Mole is described. Mole was developed using the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework for solving species transport problems in flowing liquid. It is applied to leaching of Cr from alloys into molten salts part a of a multi-physics, multi-scale approach for coupling chemistry with mechanical behavior modeling. Demonstrations of the leaching phenomenon were benchmarked to experimental data provided by the Molten Salt Reactor campaign and the results are presented.

Analysis of Tank 38H (HTF-38-20-62, -63) and Tank 43H (HTF-43-20-60, -61) Samples for Support of the Enrichment Control and Corrosion Control Programs

SRNL analyzed samples from Tank 38H and Tank 43H to support ECP and CCP. The results indicate the concentrations of most species in the Tank 38H surface sample increased from the previous surface sample. The Tank 38H sub-surface sample shows only small changes in concentration for most major species in the solution from the previous sample. The large differences in the concentrations of major components between the Tank 38H surface and sub-surface samples indicate significant stratification of solution species within the tank. The Tank 38H surface and sub-surface samples both contained a small amount of sludge solids (<1 wt%). The Tank 43H surface and sub-surface samples are slightly more dilute than the previous samples. The Tank 43H sub-surface sample exhibits a composition more concentrated than the surface sample indicating some stratification within the tank. The Tank 38H surface and sub-surface sample both show large increases in the concentrations of uranium and plutonium likely due to the presence of sludge solids in both samples. (Note: the samples were digested and analyzed without filtration.) The total uranium concentrations of the two Tank 43H samples are similar to the previous sample results. The plutonium concentration in both Tank 43H samples appear to have decreased from the previous samples; however, the surface sample concentrations are close to the detection limit.

Analysis of Tank 38H (HTF-38-20-103, -104) and Tank 43H (HTF-43-20-105, -106) Samples for Support of the Enrichment Control and Corrosion Control Programs

SRNL analyzed samples from Tank 38H and Tank 43H to support ECP and CCP. The results indicate the concentrations of most species in the Tank 38H surface sample decreased from the previous surface sample. The Tank 38H sub-surface sample shows only minor changes in concentration for soluble species in the solution (e.g., Na, Al, Cs-137) but a large drop in concentrations for species typically associated with sludge solids (e.g., U, Pu, Fe, Si) likely because of a decrease in sludge solids from the previous sample. The large differences in the concentrations of major components between the Tank 38H surface and sub-surface samples indicate significant stratification of solution species within the tank.

Corrosion Behavior Characterization of Tantalum in Flowing LBE [Slides]

Tantalum is a refractory metal, it has low coefficient thermal expansion and high creep resistance. Its BCC structure makes Ta less prone to radiation damage. It is 2nd most ductile among refractories. Its oxide (Ta 2 O 5 ) layer is thin and stable at high temperatures and low oxygen concentrations.
