User Manual for the Thermal Hydraulic Code SE2RCT

SE2-ANL is a modified version of SUPERENERGY-2 which interfaces the power distribution in the ANL maintained physics codes for the user. SE2RCT is a special version of SE2-ANL developed for specific use on models of the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II). SE2RCT fulfills a specific role in the calculated results as part of the Fuels Irradiation and Physics Database (FIPD) and is built to connect with the Physics and Analysis DataBase (PADB) for metallic fuel research and development in advanced sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) created for EBR-II. SE2RCT is primarily a thermal analysis code that interfaces with the RCT based pin power details instead of the built-in pin power dehomogenization strategy in SE2-ANL. Beyond the thermal hydraulic calculation, the SE2RCT code provides detailed axial distributions of the RCT calculated results. SE2RCT also calculates the the axial distribution of pin wise DPA for the cladding materials which is part of the FIPD calculated results. This report serves as the user manual for SE2RCT and thus eliminates the QA gap of missing documentation on the SE2RCT software. All of the features and limitations of SE2RCT are documented in this report. The input and output specifications of SE2RCT are discussed in detail, and some unique features of SE2RCT, e.g. accurate pin power and temperature results for problems with non-uniform composition within an assembly, are also demonstrated and tested.

Gas Permeability Test Protocol for Ion-Exchange Membranes

The membrane-based electrolysis of water is a growing topic of interest due to the advantages of employing membranes in hydrogen production efficiency and system safety over the traditional alkaline water electrolysis. Ion-exchange membranes with low gas permeability are highly desirable for stable and safe operation of membrane-based water-splitting technologies, hence gas permeability through ion-exchange membranes needs to be properly assessed with standardized methods. We addressed three methods to measure gas permeability of ion-exchange membranes, a pressure permeation cell, chronoamperometry microelectrodes, and in situ testing of the membrane electrode assembly, and provide a guideline for choosing the appropriate method for the targeted operating conditions of the water electrolyzers.

Design and development of pressure and repressurization purge system for reusable space shuttle multilayer insulation system

The manufacturing tasks for the program included the fabrication and assembly of an epoxy fiberglass purge bag to encapsulate an insulated cryogenic propellant tank. Purge, repressurization and venting hardware were procured and installed on the purge bag assembly in preparation for performance testing. The fabrication and installation of the superfloc multilayer insulation (MLI) on the cryogenic tank was accomplished as part of a continuing program. An abstraction of the results of the MLI fabrication task is included to describe the complete fabrication requirements for a reusable cryogenic propellant space storage system.

Prospective areas in the production technology of scientific equipment for space research

The average labor of individual types of operations in the percentage ratio of the total labor consumption of manufacturing scientific instruments and apparatus for space research is presented. The prospective areas in the production technology of billet, machining, mechanical assembly, installation and assembly, adjustment and regulation and testing and control operations are noted. Basic recommendations are made with respect to further reduction of labor consumption and an increase in the productivity of labor when manufacturing scientific equipment for space research.

Cyclic fatigue analysis of rocket thrust chambers. Volume 2: Attitude control thruster high cycle fatigue

A finite element stress analysis was performed for the film cooled throat section of an attitude control thruster. The anlaysis employed the RETSCP finite element computer program. The analysis included thermal and pressure loads, and the effects of temperature dependent material properties, to determine the strain range corresponding to the thruster operating cycle. The configuration and operating conditions considered, correspond to a flightweight integrated thruster assembly which was thrust pulse tested. The computed strain range was used in conjuction with Haynes 188 Universal Slopes minimum life data to predict throat section fatigue life. The computed number of cycles to failure was greater than the number of pulses to which the thruster was experimentally subjected without failure.

Design fabrication, testing, and delivery of shuttle heat pipe leading edge test modules. Volume 1: Executive summary

The construction of two test modules is presented for a feasibility demonstration of a concept for reusable space shuttle wing leading edge surfaces. In this leading edge concept high temperature heat pipes were incorporated into the structure to cool the stagnation region, allowing the use of super-alloys in place of refractory metal, ablator protected, or carbon-carbon structures. The program included the analysis and design of the heat pipes, their integration into the test module structure, heat pipe development testing, construction of the test modules and a facility adapter, and formulation of recommended testing conditions. The results of the heat pipe and leading edge module thermal analyses indicate the test modules will meet the design goal; reducing the leading edge temperature at the stagnation line from 1315 C (2400 F) to less than 1010 C (1850 F). The development tests demonstrated that the module assembly could be brazed with active heat pipes, as was borne out by the subsequent successful brazing of both modules with active heat pipes loaded with sodium.

Decision theory in structural reliability

Some fundamentals of reliability analysis as applicable to aerospace structures are reviewed, and the concept of a test option is introduced. A decision methodology, based on statistical decision theory, is developed for determining the most cost-effective design factor and method of testing for a given structural assembly. The method is applied to several Saturn V and Space Shuttle structural assemblies as examples. It is observed that the cost and weight features of the design have a significant effect on the optimum decision.

Pulsed Phase-Locked-Loop Strain Monitor

P2sup.L2sup. strain monitor measures strain by monitoring change in phase of acoustic signal that passes through stressed sample. Phase sample causes shift in frequency of VCO. As with other monitors of this type, instrument is only accurate in elastic range of material. Monitor is expected to have broad application in materials testing, structural design, fabrication and assembly.

Control theoretics for large structural systems

The areas of research addressed include modeling identification for both the purposes of analysis and controls, design of structural control systems actuator sensor placement, and distributed sensing and actuation as opposed to co-located sensor and actuators. Also investigated are adaptive/learning processes that could more specifically be referred to as inflight testing procedures where a structure is tested during its deployment or assembly and during its orbital life at specific points where the characteristics of the structure for the purpose of tuning the control system are identified. Another area is redundancy management techniques for structural systems. This is important because of the reliability issue for managing multiple very large numbers of sensors and actuators.

Design and evaluation of low cost blades for large wind driven generating systems

The development and evaluation of a low cost blade concept based on the NASA-Lewis specifications is discussed. A blade structure was designed and construction methods and materials were selected. Complete blade tooling concepts, various technical and economic analysis, and evaluations of the blade design were performed. A comprehensive fatigue test program was conducted to provide data and to verify the design. A test specimen of the spar assembly, including the root end attachment, was fabricated. This is a full-scale specimen of the root end configuration, 20 ft long. A blade design for the Mod '0' system was completed.
