Many material device applications would benefit from thin diamond coatings, but current growth techniques, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or atomic layer deposition require high substrate and gas-phase temperatures that would destroy the device being coated. The development of freestanding, thin boron-doped diamond nanosheets grown on tantalum foil substrates via microwave plasma-assisted CVD is reported. These diamond sheets (measuring up to 4 × 5 mm in planar area, and 300–600 nm in thickness) are removed from the substrate using mechanical exfoliation and then transferred to other substrates, including Si/SiO 2 and graphene. The electronic properties of the resulting diamond nanosheets and their dependence on the free-standing growth, the mechanical exfoliation and transfer processes, and ultimately on their composition are characterized. To support this, a prototypical diamond nanosheet–graphene field effect transistor-like (DNGfet) device is developed and its electronic transport properties are studied as a function of temperature. The resulting DNGfet device exhibits thermally activated transport (thermionic conductance) above 50 K. Below 50 K a transition to variable range hopping is observed. Finally, these findings demonstrate the first step towards a low-temperature diamond-based transistor.
Abstract Vanadium catalysts offer unique selectivity in olefin polymerization, yet are underutilized industrially owing to their poor stability and productivity. Reported here is the immobilization of vanadium by cation exchange in MFU‐4 l , thus providing a metal–organic framework (MOF) with vanadium in a molecule‐like coordination environment. This material forms a single‐site heterogeneous catalyst with methylaluminoxane and provides polyethylene with low polydispersity (PDI≈3) and the highest activity (up to 148 000 h −1 ) reported for a MOF‐based polymerization catalyst. Furthermore, polyethylene is obtained as a free‐flowing powder as desired industrially. Finally, the catalyst shows good structural integrity and retains polymerization activity for over 24 hours, both promising attributes for the commercialization of vanadium‐based polyolefins.
Abstract Lanthanide triflates have been used to incorporate Nd III and Sm III ions into the 2.2.2‐cryptand ligand (crypt) to explore their reductive chemistry. The Ln(OTf) 3 complexes (Ln=Nd, Sm; OTf=SO 3 CF 3 ) react with crypt in THF to form the THF‐soluble complexes [Ln III (crypt)(OTf) 2 ][OTf] with two triflates bound to the metal encapsulated in the crypt. Reduction of these Ln III ‐in‐crypt complexes using KC 8 in THF forms the neutral Ln II ‐in‐crypt triflate complexes [Ln II (crypt)(OTf) 2 ]. DFT calculations on [Nd II (crypt)] 2+ ], the first Nd II cryptand complex, assign a 4f 4 electron configuration to this ion.
Abstract The methylamino diazonium cations [CH 3 N(H)N 2 ] + and [CF 3 N(H)N 2 ] + were prepared as their low‐temperature stable [AsF 6 ] − salts by protonation of azidomethane and azidotrifluoromethane in superacidic systems. They were characterized by NMR and Raman spectroscopy. Unequivocal proof of the protonation site was obtained by the crystal structures of both salts, confirming the formation of alkylamino diazonium ions. The Lewis adducts CH 3 N 3 ⋅AsF 5 and CF 3 N 3 ⋅AsF 5 were also prepared and characterized by low‐temperature NMR and Raman spectroscopy, and also by X‐ray structure determination for CH 3 N 3 ⋅AsF 5 . Electronic structure calculations were performed to provide additional insights. Attempted electrophilic amination of aromatics such as benzene and toluene with methyl‐ and trifluoromethylamino diazonium ions were unsuccessful.
Abstract Scavenging is an influential ecosystem process, providing many weak, but stabilizing food web links. Amphibians and reptiles (i.e., herpetofauna) utilize land/water interfaces and can have large biomasses concentrated here, making them important vectors of nutrients between aquatic and terrestrial systems and a valuable resource to scavengers. There are limited data on the fate of herpetofauna carrion, and thus, it is unknown how such carcasses are incorporated into food webs or how habitat and carcass characteristics influence which scavengers acquire these resources. We used camera traps to determine the proportion of experimental amphibian and reptile carcasses (lizards, salamanders, frogs, and toads) scavenged by vertebrates and invertebrates in two different habitats (wetland and upland) during the spring in the southeastern USA . Vertebrates removed 19.8% of all herpetofauna carcasses in both habitats, with the remaining carcasses removed by invertebrates (80.2%). We used log‐linear models to evaluate the impact of habitat and carcass type on scavenging. We determined that habitat, but not carcass type, was influential in determining whether a vertebrate or invertebrate scavenged a carcass, with vertebrates able to scavenge more carcasses in wetland than in upland areas. In less than two days, 86.2% of all carcasses in both habitat types were completely scavenged, and carcasses in wetlands were removed more quickly, suggesting intense competition between vertebrates and invertebrates. Additionally, we observed low vertebrate scavenger richness, which we attribute to high invertebrate activity in the spring and the small size of the herpetofauna carcasses (<100 g). We identified the scavenging pathways along which herpetofauna are incorporated into the food web and the factors that influence those pathways, suggesting the large extent and spatial scale of this resource's influence on food web connections and consequently food web and ecosystem stability.
The reductive cyclization of two linear hexasilanes is contrasted, where a methylated precursor yielded a cyclohexasilane while the tert-butyl-functionalized analog unexpectedly yielded a cyclopentasilane. A comprehensive analysis using X-ray diffraction, IR, HR, HRMS, and multinuclear (1H, 13C and 29Si) 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy identified the 1,2-dihydrodisilane tBuPhHSi–SiHPhtBu as an additional product, which was interpreted as supportive of a mechanism involving silylene elimination. Here, the results of this study may prove informative about substituent effects in the practice of complex organosilicon molecular synthesis.
