Contrasting coordination of non‐structural carbohydrates with leaf and root economic strategies of alpine coniferous forests

Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), as the labile fraction and dominant carbon currency, are essential mediators of plant adaptation to environments. However, whether and how NSC coordinates with plant economic strategy frameworks, particularly the well-recognized leaf economics spectrums (LES) and root economics space (RES), remains unclear. We examined the relationships between NSC and key plant economics traits in leaves and fine roots across 90 alpine coniferous populations on the Tibetan Plateau, China. We observed contrasting coordination of NSC with economics traits in leaves and roots. Leaf total NSC and soluble sugar aligned with the leaf economic spectrum, conveying a trade-off between growth and storage in leaves. However, NSC in roots was independent of the root economic spectrum, but highly coordinated with root foraging, with more starch and less sugar in forage-efficient, thinner roots. Further, NSC-trait coordination in leaves and roots was, respectively, driven by local temperature and precipitation. These findings highlight distinct roles of NSC in shaping the above- and belowground multidimensional economics trait space, and NSC-based carbon economics provides a mechanistic understanding of how plants adapt to heterogeneous habitats and respond to environmental changes.

Raw seedling and sapling census data collected from June 2015 - April 2019 within a tropical wet forest in Puerto Rico

This data package contains data used to evaluate the effects of experimental warming (4˚C above ambient), drought, and hurricane disturbance on species richness, diversity, and composition of understory plant communities across ontogeny at the Tropical Responses to Altered Climate Experiment (TRACE) in Luquillo, Puerto Rico. The raw data in this package include a file for the species composition matrix of woody seedlings (>10 cm and <20 cm height; TRACE_composition_seedling.csv) and saplings (>20 cm height; TRACE_composition_sapling.csv) within the six TRACE plots, collected during six census dates from June 2015 to April 2019. Also included is also a file with the species names associated with the species codes found in the composition files (TRACE_species_codes.csv), and a data dictionary file describing the columns in the composition files (data_dictionary_composition_files.csv). All data files are in csv format, with the exception of the metadata which is in xml format.

SPRUCE Methane Transport in Plants at S1 Bog, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2017-2019

This data set contains measurements of methane (CH4) transport by plants (both ground-layer and trees) and diffusion, as well as whole-plot emissions, taken in September 2018 and June 2019 in S1 Bog outside of the SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experimental enclosures. Additionally, CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) stable isotope data in porewater and atmospheric emissions were taken in July 2017 in the SPRUCE enclosures to explore the relative magnitude of CH4 oxidation. Episodic ebullition rates for S1 Bog are taken from Gill et al. (2017). Methane transport is an important component of many ecosystem models of peatlands. The results were compared to two methane models that have been developed for the SPRUCE project, ELM-SPRUCE (Earth Land Model) and TECO_SPRUCE (Terrestrial ECOsystem model). This dataset contains six data files in comma separate (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: six data dictionaries and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

SPRUCE Whole Ecosystem Warming (WEW) Environmental Data and Water Table Summaries, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2015-2024

This data set contains observations of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), precipitation, soil temperature, soil volumetric water content, air temperature, relative humidity, and normalized water table depth that are summarized on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis for each of the SPRUCE plots. Observations span 2015-2024. This dataset draws on several datasets (Hanson et al. 2016; Hanson et al. 2020; and Warren, unpublished data) and compiles these environmental observations into useful formats for data analysis. These environmental metrics can be used to understand the environmental conditions inside SPRUCE environmental chambers throughout the durations of the experiment and can be paired with other data for modeling and analysis. R code used to generate these files is provided as part of the data package. This dataset contains four data files in comma separate (.csv) format and a compressed folder (*.zip) containing three R (*.r) scripts. Additional metadata are provided: one data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format. User note: Users must cite the original dataset/s along with this dataset when publishing any analyses using this dataset. Details on the dataset used to compile each variable are available in the header row of the files and in the user guide.

Editorial: Advances in observations and modeling of snow, forest-snow processes and snow hydrology

Seasonal snowpack plays a pivotal role in the regional water cycle. In Western mountainous regions, where precipitation predominantly occurs as snow during winter and is limited in the summer months when water demand peaks, snowpack serves as a critical water source essential for sustaining water supply, ecosystems, agriculture, and industries. Additionally, snowpack dynamically influences extreme events, such as floods, droughts, and wildfires, through intricate land-atmosphere feedback. Nevertheless, significant knowledge gaps persist within this field due to data limitations and the complexity of the physics involved in modeling snow and snow hydrology (i.e., snow acts as a critical upstream hydrological process). Here, this research topic presents a collection of manuscripts that address some of these important research gaps.

Expansion of high-latitude deciduous forests driven by interactions between climate warming and fire: Modeling Archive

This Modeling Archive is in support of an NGEE Arctic publication. More information in the related references. The dataset is a model (ecosys) output used in a study that examined the potential future shifts in high-latitude vegetation types (PFTs) driven by changes in 21st century climate and fire. The study highlights the importance of mechanistically representing differences in plant functional traits on current and possible 21st century trajectories of Alaskan PFTs. This dataset package includes 13 files in pdf, csv, and nc formats. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

Evidence of localized strong enhancements in lower stratospheric CH3CN following intense forest fire activity

On 24 August 1992, the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite observed a significant enhancement in the abundance of lower stratospheric methyl cyanide at approximately 16-19 km in altitude in a small region off the coast of Florida. Concentrations of order 1400 parts per trillion by volume were observed, compared to a typical stratospheric background level of 30 pptv.
