Diminiode thermionic conversion with 111-iridium electrodes

Preliminary data indicating thermionic-conversion potentialities for a 111-iridium emitter and collector spaced 0.2 mm apart are presented. These results comprise output densities of current and of power as functions of voltage for three sets of emitter, collector, and reservoir temperatures: 1553, 944, 561 K; 1605, 898, 533 K; and 1656, 1028, 586 K. For the 1605 K evaluation, estimates produced work-function values of 2.22 eV for the emitter and 1.63 eV for the collector with a 2.0-eV barrier index (collector work function plus interelectrode voltage drop) corresponding to the maximum output of 5.5 W/sq cm at 0.24 volt. The current, voltage curve for the 1656 K 111-iridium diminiode yields a 6.2 W/sq cm maximum at 0.25 volt and is comparable with the 1700 K envelope for a diode with an etched-rhenium emitter and a 0.025-mm electrode gap made by TECO and evaluated by NASA.

Photoconductivity of high voltage space insulating materials: Measurements with metal electrodes

The electrical conductivities of high voltage insulating materials were measured in the dark and under various intensities of illumination. The materials investigated included FEP Teflon, Kapton-H, fused quartz, and parylene. Conductivities were determined as functions of temperature between 22 and 100 C and light intensity between 0 and 2.5 kW/m2. The thickness dependence of the conductivity was determined for Teflon and Kapton, and the influence of spectral wavelengths on the conductivity was determined in several cases. All measurements were made in a vacuum to simulate a space environment, and all samples had metallic electrodes. The conductivity of Kapton was permanently increased by exposure to light; changes as great as five orders of magnitude were observed after six hours of illumination.

Factors affecting the open-circuit voltage and electrode kinetics of some iron/titanium redox flow cells

Performance of the iron-titanium redox flow cell was studied as a function of acid concentration. Anion permeable membranes separated the compartments. Electrodes were graphite cloth. Current densities ranged up to 25 mA/square centimeter. Open-circuit and load voltages decreased as the acidity was increased on the iron side as predicted. On the titanium side, open-circuit voltages decreased as the acidity was increased in agreement with theory, but load voltages increased due to decreased polarization with increasing acidity. High acidity on the titanium side coupled with low acidity on the iron side gives the best load voltage, but such cells show voltage losses as they are repeatedly cycled. Analyses show that the bulk of the voltage losses are due to diffusion of acid through the membrane.

Work function determination of promising electrode materials for thermionic converters

Work performed on this contract was primarily for the evaluation of selected electrode materials for thermionic energy converters. The original objective was to characterize selected nickel based superalloys up to temperatures of 1400 K. It was found that an early selection, Inconel 800 produced a high vapor pressure which interfered with the vacuum emission measurements. The program then shifted to two other areas. The first area was to obtain emission from the superalloys in a cesiated atmosphere. The cesium plasma helps to suppress the vaporization interference. The second area involved characterization of the Lanthanum-Boron series as thermionic emitters. These final two areas resulted in three journal publications which are attached to this report.

Lightweight electrodes

The fabrication of a lightweight composite nickel hydroxide electrode based on nickel-coated graphite is described and its effect on the load to failure and electrical resistivity of nickel cadmium and nickel zinc systems was evaluated. The use pure lead in lead acid batteries for submarines is also discussed.

Factors affecting the open-circuit voltage and electrode kinetics of some iron/titanium/redox flow cells

The effect of acid concentration on the performance of the iron-titanium redox flow cell was studied. When the acidity was increased, open-circuit voltages decreased on the titanium side but load voltages increased due to decreased polarization. The best load voltage occurs when there is high acidity on the titanium side coupled with low acidity on the iron side, but such cells show voltage losses with repeated cycling because of the diffusion of acid through the membrane. No membrane tested has been found capable of maintaining the differences in acidity. Chelating agents show some promise in reducing polarization at the Ti electrode and thus improving energy efficiency.

Nickel electrode plate thickening study

The rate of thickening of the nickel electrode with cycling, under geochronous conditions, was investigated. The experimental procedures used to study the effects of various operational parameters on the rate of the thickness growth are outlined. The parameters included temperature, electrolyte composition, manufacturing lot, cycle parameters, and reconditioning methods.

Initial capacity conditioning on electrochemical nickel hydroxide electrodes

Conditioning is the initial cycling where cell capacity is usually unstable. The causes of the initial capacity build were examined. Gridless electrodes were fabricated to ensure mechanical homogeneity, so that a strain measured in one direction would be typical of a strain measured in the other directions. Plate hardness was also determined. These two parameters stabilize together.

Production of pulsed electric fields using capacitively coupled electrodes

It is shown that pulsed electric fields can be produced over extended volumes by taking advantage of the internal capacitances in a stacked array of electrodes. The design, construction, and performance of practical arrays are discussed. The prototype arrays involved fields of 100-1000 V/cm extending over several centimeters. Scaling to larger physical dimensions is straightforward.

Traveling-wave tube efficiency improvement with textured pyrolytic graphite multistage depressed collector electrodes

The improved efficiency of a multistage depressed collector (MDC) with ion-beam textured pyrolytic graphite electrode surfaces is demonstrated by comparison with the performance of other MDC's tested with the same microwave RF amplifier traveling-wave tube (TWT). Because of the sensitivity of overall TWT efficiency to collector efficiency, significant improvements in TWT performance are possible with the use of textured pyrolytic graphite MDC's.

Thermal dielectric breakdown with cylindrical electrodes

Solutions to the equations of thermal breakdown are computed for cylindrial electrodes with different boundary conditions. The development of the electric field and the temperature distributions are followed as functions of time, consequent on the application of a constant interelectrode voltage. The implications for possible breakdown by modes other than thermal are briefly discussed.

Electrodes for solid state devices

The invention relates to coated metal powders and to dispersions of such powders in liquid vehicles forming screenable, sinterable pastes for use in forming electrodes on photovoltaic devices. The primary nickel or copper metal particles are provided with a carrier of lower melting sintering metals such as 1-20% by weight, of a non-oxidizing metal such as lead or tin. The powdered metal systems operate on the basis of fusing together by way of eutectic alloying. As the paste is heated during firing the organic binder is first vaporized. An eutectic of the base metal (copper) and coating (tin) forms at the intersections of the base metal grains. This eutectic dissolves the grains and as the temperature is raised above the eutectic temperature, more of the base metal is dissolved. While the temperature is held at the higher value, the much smaller amount of sintering metal disappears as the eutectic dissolves and diffuses into the base metal until the composition of the eutectic is so enriched with base metal that it no longer has the eutectic properties and it solidifies. In this high temperature solidification, the base metal grains became thoroughly alloyed together and will not separate at the eutectic temperature (a lower temperature than their solidification by diffusion).

The definition of the process of electrochemical impregnation of nickel electrodes

Electrochemical impregnation was studied during a series of experiments designed to define the optimal conditions for the fabrication of dimensionally stable cell anodes of Ni-H2 and Ni-Cd systems. The influence of various parameters, such as current and duration of electrolysis, temperature and acidity of the chemical bath, the concentrations of Ni and Co as well as the use of ethanol was determined. Results show that the electrochemical impregnation process as defined is industrially feasible and it is suggested that Ni-H2 and Ni-Cd type electrodes be produced in sufficient quantity to further evaluate their performance characteristics.
