Verification of interim simulated atmospheric turbulence
During horizontal and near-horizontal flight of the space shuttle orbiter, the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the vehicle are crucial in establishing the space shuttle design, control, and human pilot effects. The effects of both turbulent gusts and gust gradients (shears) must be taken into account. By means of a nonrecursive turbulence simulation model, twelve simulated turbulence time series for gusts and gust gradients were generated as part of a previous investigation. The current investigation was concerned with the spectral analysis of the time series based on the use of Fourier transform theory. A comparison between the computed spectra and the corresponding von Karman theoretical spectra is also included. A basic difference is explained between the computed and theoretical spectra which was identified as a result of the comparison. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Orbiter S-band direct link system verification test report
Space-to-ground S-band communications system compatibility and performance tests were performed for the various radio frequency links. These tests consisted of the various uplink and downlink signal combinations (data rates) for the phase modulation system and both realtime and playback data rates for the frequency modulated downlink systems. In addition, tests involving encryption/decryption, Doppler, and acquisition were performed. Results show that the S-band transponder for the space shuttle orbiter is compatible with the S-band equipment of the AFSCF/RTS (Air Force Satellite Control Facility/Remote Tracking Station). It is also concluded that the performance of the orbiter-AFSCF/RTS direct link exceeds the required performance and that this communications link will meet the system requirements of the Space Transportation System.
Traveling clock verification of VLBI synchronization
Four experiments are described which involved measurements of clock offsets at two DSN stations. Both VLBI and traveling clock measurements were performed and the agreement between the two methods was within about 6 ns for all four comparisons.
Field verification of lateral-torsional coupling effects on rotor instabilities in centrifugal compressors
Lateral and torsional vibration data obtained on a centrifugal compressor train which had shaft instabilities and gear failures is examined. The field data verifies that the stability of centrifugal compressors can be adversely affected by coincidence of torsional natural frequencies with lateral instability frequencies. The data also indicates that excitation energy from gear boxes can reduce stability margins if energy is transmitted either laterally or torsionally to the compressors. The lateral and torsional coupling mechanisms of shaft systems is discussed. The coupling mechanisms in a large industrial compressor train are documented and the potential effect on rotor stability is demonstrated. Guidelines are set forth to eliminate these potential problems by minimizing the interaction of torsional and lateral responses and their effect on rotor stability.
