All Electrospray Printing of Carbon–Based Cost–Effective Perovskite Solar Cells

With the power conversion efficiencies of PSCs exceeding 25%, the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are closer to step into the initial industrialization. Prior to transferring from laboratory fabrication to industrial manufacturing, issues such as scalability, materials cost, and production line compatibility that significantly impact the manufacturing remain to be addressed. Here we report breakthroughs on all these fronts. Carbon-based PSCs with architecture FTO/electron transport layer/perovskite/carbon, that eliminate the need for the hole transport layer and noble metal electrode, provide ultra-low-cost configuration. This PSC architecture was manufactured using a scalable and industrially compatible electrospray (ES) technique, which enables continuous printing of all the cell layers. The ES deposited electron transport layer and perovskite layer exhibited properties comparable to that of the laboratory-scale spin coating method. The ES deposited carbon electrode layer exhibited superior conductivity and interfacial microstructure in comparison to films synthesized using the conventional doctor blading technique. As a result, the fully ES printed carbon-based PSCs showed a record 14.41% power conversion efficiency, rivaling the state-of-the-art hole transporter-free PSCs. Furthermore, these results will immediately have an impact on the scalable production of PSCs.

Tailoring the Redox Reactions for High-Capacity Cycling of Cation-Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes

Cation-disordered rocksalts (DRXs) have emerged as a new class of high-capacity Li-ion cathode materials. One unique advantage of the DRX chemistry is the structural flexibility that substantially lessens the elemental constraints in the crystal lattice, such as Li content, choice of transition metal redox center paired with appropriate d 0 metal, and incorporation of F anion, which allows optimization of the key redox reactions. Herein, a series of the DRX oxyfluorides based on the Mn redox have been designed and synthesized. By tailoring the stoichiometry of the DRX compositions, high-capacity cycling by promoting the cationic Mn 2+ /Mn 4+ redox reactions while suppressing those from anionic O is successfully demonstrated. A highly fluorinated DRX compound, Li 1.2 Mn 0.625 Nb 0.175 O 1.325 F 0.675 (M 0.625 F 0.675 ), delivers a capacity of ≈170 mAh g -1 at C/3 for 100 cycles. Furthermore, this work showcases the concept of balancing the cationic and anionic redox reactions in the DRX cathodes for improved electrochemical performance through the rational composition design.

Using Preformed Meisenheimer Complexes as Dopants for n-Type Organic Thermoelectrics with High Seebeck Coefficients and Power Factors

A pre-formed Meisenheimer complex of a naphthalenediimide (NDI) with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) is obtained in a simple way by mixing dibrominated 4,9-dibromo-2,7-bis(2-octyldodecyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone and TBAF in solution and used as a dopant for n-type organic thermoelectrics. Additionally, two n-type polymers PNDIClTVT and PBDOPVTT are synthesized, n-doped, and characterized as conductive and thermoelectric materials. PNDIClTVT doped with NDI-TBAF presents a high σ value of 0.20 S cm –1 , a Seebeck coefficient (S) of -1854 µV K –1 , and a power factor (PF) of 67 µW m –1 K –2 , among the highest reported PF in solution-processed conjugated n-type polymer thermoelectrics. Using 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine and NDI-TBAF as co-dopants, PNDIClTVT has a PF > 35 µW m –1 K –2 ; while for PBDOPVTT σ = 0.75 S cm –1 and PF = 58 µW m –1 K –2 . In this study it is found that an ionic adduct together with a neutral dopant improves the performance of n-type organic thermoelectrics leading to an enhanced power factor, and more generally, the role of such an adduct in polymer doping is also elucidated.

A Difluoro‐Monobromo End Group Enables High‐Performance Polymer Acceptor and Efficient All‐Polymer Solar Cells Processable with Green Solvent under Ambient Condition

Abstract In this paper, a difluoro‐monobromo end group is designed and synthesized, which is then used to construct a novel polymer acceptor (named PY2F‐T) yielding high‐performance all‐polymer solar cells with 15.22% efficiency. The fluorination strategy can increase the intramolecular charge transfer and interchain packing of the previous PY‐T based acceptor, and significantly improve photon harvesting and charge mobility of the resulting polymer acceptor. In addition, detailed morphology investigations reveal that the PY2F‐T‐based blend shows smaller domain spacing and higher domain purity, which significantly suppress charge recombination as supported by time‐resolved techniques. These polymer properties enable simultaneously enhanced J SC and FF of the PY2F‐T‐based devices, eventually delivering device efficiencies of over 15%, significantly outperforming that of the devices based on the non‐fluorinated PY‐T polymer (13%). More importantly, the PY2F‐T‐based active layers can be processed under ambient conditions and still achieve a 14.37% efficiency. They can also be processed using non‐halogenated solvent o ‐xylene (no additive) and yield a decent performance of 13.05%. This work demonstrates the success of the fluorination strategy in the design of high‐performance polymer acceptors, which provide guidelines for developing new all‐PSCs with better efficiencies and stabilities for commercial applications.

In Situ Synthesis of Graphene-Coated Silicon Monoxide Anodes from Coa-Derived Humic Acid for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon monoxide (SiO) is attaining extensive interest amongst silicon-based materials due to its high capacity and long cycle life; however, its low intrinsic electrical conductivity and poor coulombic efficiency strictly limit its commercial applications. Here low-cost coal-derived humic acid (HA) is used as a feedstock to synthesize in-situ graphene-coated disproportionated SiO (D-SiO@G) anode with a facile method. HRTEM and XRD confirm the well-coated graphene layers on an SiO surface. Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) and X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectra analysis indicate that the graphene coating effectively hinders the side-reactions between the electrolyte and SiO particles . As a result, the D-SiO@G anode presents an initial discharge capacity of 1937.6 mAh g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 and an initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 78.2%. High reversible capacity (1023 mAh g -1 at 2.0 A g -1 ), excellent cycling performance ( 72.4% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g -1 ), and rate capability (774 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 ) results are substantial. Full coin cells assembled with LiFePO 4 electrodes and D-SiO@G electrodes display impressive rate performance. These results indicate a promising potential for practical use in high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet SmCo 5 for Chiral Interfacial Spin-Orbitronics

Interfacially asymmetric magnetic multilayers made of heavy metal/ferromagnet have attracted considerable attention in the spintronics community for accommodating spin-orbit torques (SOTs) and meanwhile for hosting chiral spin textures. In these multilayers, the accompanied interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (iDMI) permits the formation of Néel-type spin textures. While significant progresses have been made in Co, CoFeB, Co 2 FeAl, CoFeGd based multilayers, it would be intriguing to identify new magnetic multilayers that could enable spin-torque controllability and meanwhile host nanoscale skyrmions. In this report, first, thin films made of permanent magnet SmCo 5 with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are synthesized, in which the deterministic SOT switching, enabled by the spin Hall effect, in Pt/SmCo 5 /Ta trilayer is demonstrated. Further, the stabilization of room-temperature skyrmions with diameters ≈100 nm in [Pt/SmCo 5 /Ta] 15 , together with a skyrmionium-like spin texture in [Pt/SmCo 5 /Ir] 15 multilayers is shown. Based on the material specific parameters, micromagnetic simulations are also carried out. The results confirm the presence of chiral spin textures in this new material family. Through interfacial engineering, the results thus demonstrate that rare earth permanent magnets could be a new platform for studying interfacial chiral spintronics.

Ionic Dopant-Induced Ordering Enhances the Thermoelectric Properties of a Polythiophene-Based Block Copolymer

Conjugated polymer-based block copolymers (CP-BCPs) are an unexplored class of materials for organic thermoelectrics. In this study, the authors report on the electronic conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (α) of a newly synthesized CP-BCP, poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly (oligo-oxyethylene methacrylate) (P3HT-b-POEM), upon solution co-processing with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and subsequently vapor-doping with a molecular dopant, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ). It is found that the addition of the hydrophilic block POEM greatly enhances the processability of P3HT, enabling homogeneous solution-mixing with LiTFSI. Notably, interactions between P3HT-b-POEM with ionic species significantly improve molecular order and unexpectedly cause electrical oxidizing doping of P3HT block both in solution and solid-states, a phenomenon that has not been previously observed in Li-salt containing P3HT. Vapor doping of P3HT-b-POEM-LiTFSI thin films with F4TCNQ further enhances σ and yields a thermoelectric power factor PF = α 2 σ of 13.0 μW m -1 K -2 , which is more than 20 times higher than salt-free P3HT-b-POEM sample. Through modeling thermoelectric behaviors of P3HT-b-POEM with the Kang-Snyder transport model, the improvement in PF is attributed to higher electronic charge mobility originating from the enhanced molecular ordering of P3HT. The results demonstrate that solution co-processing CP-BCPs with a salt is a powerful method to control structure and performance of organic thermoelectric materials.

Exsolution Synthesis of Nanocomposite Perovskites with Tunable Electrical and Magnetic Properties

Nanostructured functional oxides play an important role in enabling clean energy technologies and novel memory and processor devices. Using thin-film La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3 (LSF) as a model system, the novel utility of exsolution in fabricating self-assembled metal oxide nanocomposites with tunable functionalities is shown. Exsolution triggers the formation of metallic iron (Fe 0 ) nanoparticles, Ruddlesden–Popper domains, and nm-scale percolated Fe-deficient channels in LSF. Combining multimodal characterization with numerical modeling, the chemical, magnetic, and electrical properties of the exsolution-synthesized nanocomposite at different stages of Fe 0 exsolution as well as during redox cycling are assessed. After exsolution, the electronic conductivity of the nanocomposite LSF increased by more than two orders of magnitude. Based on numerical analysis representing all the constituents, it is expected that this increase in conductivity originates mainly from the Fe-deficient percolating channels formed during exsolution. Moreover, the exsolved nanocomposite is redox-active even at moderate temperatures. Such redox capabilities can enable dynamic control of the nanocomposite functionality by tailoring the oxygen non-stoichiometry. This concept is demonstrated with a continuous modulation of magnetization between 0 and 110 emu cm -3 . These findings point out that exsolution may serve as a platform for scalable fabrication of complex metal oxide nanocomposites for electrochemical and electronic applications.

Transparent Refractory Aerogels for Efficient Spectral Control in High–Temperature Solar Power Generation

Although spectrally selective materials play a key role in existing and emerging solar thermal technologies, temperature-related degradation currently limits their use to below 700 °C in vacuum and even lower temperatures in air. Here a solar-transparent refractory aerogel that offers stable performance up to 800 °C in air is demonstrated, which is significantly greater than its silica counterpart. This improved stability is attributed to the formation of a refractory aluminum silicate phase, which is synthesized using a conformal single cycle of atomic layer deposition within the high-aspect-ratio pores of silica aerogels. Furthermore, based on direct heat loss measurements, the transparent refractory aerogel achieves a receiver efficiency of 75% at 100 suns and an absorber temperature of 700 °C, which is a 5% improvement over the state of the art. Transparent refractory aerogels may find widespread applicability in solar thermal technologies by enabling the use of lower-cost optical focusing systems and eliminating the need for highly evacuated receivers. In particular, a shift to higher operating temperatures while maintaining a high receiver efficiency can enable the use of advanced supercritical CO 2 power cycles and ultimately translate to an ≈10% (absolute) improvement in solar-to-electrical conversion efficiency relative to existing linear concentrating systems.

Introducing Low-Cost Pyrazine Unit into Terpolymer Enables High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency of 18.23%

Recently, a random ternary copolymerization strategy has become a promising and efficient approach to develop high-performance polymer donors for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Here, in this study, a low-cost electron-withdrawing unit, 2,5-bis(4-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)pyrazine (PZ-T), is incorporated into the polymer backbone of PM6 as the third component, and three D-A 1 -D-A 2 type terpolymers PMZ-10, PMZ-20, and PMZ-30 are synthesized by the random copolymerization strategy, with the PZ-T proportion of 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. The terpolymers exhibit downshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels than PM6, which is beneficial for obtaining higher open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of the PSCs with the polymer as a donor. Importantly, the PSCs based on PMZ-10:Y6 demonstrate efficient exciton dissociation, higher and balanced electron/hole mobilities, desirable aggregation, and high power conversion efficiency of 18.23%, which is the highest efficiency among the terpolymer-based PSCs so far. The results indicate that the ternary copolymerization strategy with PZ-T as the second A-unit is an efficient approach to further improve the photovoltaic performance and reduce the synthetic cost of the D-A copolymer donors.

High-Speed Ionic Synaptic Memory Based on 2D Titanium Carbide MXene

Synaptic devices with linear high-speed switching can accelerate learning in artificial neural networks (ANNs) embodied in hardware. Conventional resistive memories however suffer from high write noise and asymmetric conductance tuning, preventing parallel programming of ANN arrays. Electrochemical random-access memories (ECRAMs), where resistive switching occurs by ion insertion into a redox-active channel, aim to address these challenges due to their linear switching and low noise. ECRAMs using 2D materials and metal oxides however suffer from slow ion kinetics, whereas organic ECRAMs enable high-speed operation but face challenges toward on-chip integration due to poor temperature stability of polymers. Here, ECRAMs using 2D titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene that combine the high speed of organics and the integration compatibility of inorganic materials in a single high-performance device are demonstrated. These ECRAMs combine the speed, linearity, write noise, switching energy, and endurance metrics essential for parallel acceleration of ANNs, and importantly, they are stable after heat treatment needed for back-end-of-line integration with Si electronics. The high speed and performance of these ECRAMs introduces MXenes, a large family of 2D carbides and nitrides with more than 30 stoichiometric compositions synthesized to date, as promising candidates for devices operating at the nexus of electrochemistry and electronics.

In-situ Investigations on Gold Nanoparticles Stabilization Mechanisms in Biological Environments Containing HSA

Nanoparticles (NPs) developments advance innovative biomedical applications. However, complex interactions and the low colloidal stability of NPs in biological media restrict their widespread utilization. The influence of NPs properties on the colloidal stability for gold NPs with 5 and 40 nm in diameter with two surface modifications, methoxy-polyethylene glycol-sulfhydryl (PEG) and citrate, in NaCl and human serum albumin (HSA) protein solution, is investigated. This study is based on small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) methods allowing the in-situ monitoring of interactions in physiological conditions. The PEG coating provides high colloidal stability for NPs of both sizes. For 5 nm NPs in NaCl solution, a stable 3D self-assembled body-centered cubic (BCC) arrangement is detected with an interparticle distance of 20.7 ± 0.1 nm. In protein solution, this distance increases to 21.9 ± 0.1 nm by protein penetration inside the ordered structure. For citrate-capped NPs, a different mechanism is observed. The protein particles attach to the NPs surfaces, and an appropriate concentration of proteins results in a stable suspension. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM), UV–visible spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) support the SAXS results. The findings will pave the way to design and synthesize NPs with controlled behaviors in biomedical applications.

Electron Redistributed S-Doped Nickel Iron Phosphides Derived from One-Step Phosphatization of MOFs for Significantly Boosting Electrochemical Water Splitting

Nonprecious transition metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising precursors for developing electrocatalysts with high porosity and structural rigidity. This study reports the synthesis of high efficiency electrocatalysts based on S-doped NiFeP. MOF-derived S-doped NiFeP structure is synthesized by a one-step phosphorization process with using S-doped MOFs as the precursor, which is more convenient and environment friendly, and also helps retain the samples’ framework. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of the NiFeP catalysts can be improved after partially replacing P by S due to the tunable electronic structure. The optimized CCS-NiFeP-10 reaches a current density of 10 mA cm –2 for OER with an overpotential of 201 mV and outperforms most NiFe-based catalysts. The S doping plays an important role in tuning the ΔG values for intermediates formation in Ni atoms to a suitable value and exhibits a pronouncedly improved the OER performance. CCS-NiFeP-20 sample presents excellent HER performance due to the d-band center downshifting from the Fermi level. When the voltage of the electrolytic cell is 1.50 V, a current density of 10 mA cm –2 can be obtained. This strategy paves the way for designing highly active none-noble metal catalysts.

Atomically Precise Single Metal Oxide Cluster Catalyst with Oxygen–Controlled Activity

Single cluster catalysts (SCCs) consisting of atomically precise metal nanoclusters dispersed on supports represent a new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis. However, the ability to synthesize SCCs with high loading and to precisely introduce non-metal atoms to further tune their catalytic activity and reaction scope of SCCs have been longstanding challenges. In this work, a new interface confinement strategy is developed for the synthesis of a high density of atomically precise Ru oxide nanoclusters (Ru 3 O 2 ) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), attributed to the suppression of diffusion-induced metal cluster aggregation. Ru 3 O 2 /rGO exhibits a significantly enhanced activity for oxidative dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ) to quinoline with a high yield (≈86%) and selectivity (≈99%), superior to Ru and RuO 2 nanoparticles, and homogeneous single/multiple-site Ru catalysts. In addition, Ru 3 O 2 /rGO is also capable of efficiently catalyzing more complex oxidative reactions involving three reactants. The theoretical calculations reveal that the presence of two oxygen atoms in the Ru 3 O 2 motif not only leads to a weak hydrogen bonding interaction between the THQ reactant and the active site, but also dramatically depletes the density of states near the Fermi level, which is attributed to the increased positive valence state of Ru and the enhanced oxidative activity of the Ru 3 O 2 cluster for hydrogen abstraction.

Effect of the Selective Halogenation of Small Molecule Acceptors on the Blend Morphology and Voltage Loss of High-Performance Solar Cells

Herein, the impacts of the selective halogenation at two different positions of dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC) end groups and inner side chains of small molecular acceptors (SMAs) on the P D :SMA interfacial interactions, blend morphology, and resulting photovoltaic properties are described. In this study, four different SMAs (A1, A2, A3, and A4) with the same molecular backbone, but with different degrees of halogenation, are synthesized. The IC end groups on the backbones of the A1 and A3, and A2 and A4 SMAs are chlorinated and fluorinated, respectively; in addition, 6-phenoxyhexyl inner side chains of the A3 and A4 are chlorinated. The SMAs are paired with a chlorinated PBDT-Cl PD to construct organic solar cells (OSCs). The PBDT-Cl:A4-based OSC exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 17.2%, outperforming the PBDT-Cl:A1-(13.3%), PBDT-Cl:A2-(15.6%), and PBDT-Cl:A3-based OSC (16.5%). The Cl atoms on the side chains in the A3 and A4 SMAs enhance the molecular/energetic interactions at the P D :SMA interfaces and improve the blend morphology in terms of domain purity and spacing. These effects lead to the improved fill factors and reduced voltage loss of the PBDT-Cl:A3- and PBDT-Cl:A4-based OSCs. This study demonstrates the importance of appropriate halogenation of SMAs in optimizing the blend morphology, reducing voltage loss, and improving OSC performance.

Unravelling the Role of Electron Acceptors for the Universal Enhancement of Charge Transport in Quinoid-Donor-Acceptor Polymers for High-Performance Transistors

The quinoid-donor-acceptor (Q-D-A) strategy has recently emerged as a promising approach for constructing high mobility semiconducting polymers. In order to fully explore the potential of this strategy in improving the charge transport and elucidating the structure-property-performance relationships in Q-D-A polymers, a series of new polymers with different electron acceptor units and backbone coplanarity have been synthesized and characterized. In this work, all of the resulting Q-D-A polymers exhibit much more planar backbone conformations in comparison to their donor-acceptor (D-A) counterparts. Moreover, organic field-effect transistors based on Q-D-A polymers exhibit excellent effective hole mobilities in a range of 0.44 to 3.35 cm 2 V –1 s –1 , most of which are orders of magnitude higher than those of their corresponding D-A polymers. Notably, the hole mobility of 3.35 cm 2 V –1 s –1 is among the highest for the quinoidal-aromatic polymers characterized by conventional spin-coating methods. Furthermore, the role of electron acceptors in Q-D-A polymers has been comprehensively investigated. Polymers with stronger acceptor units are more inclined to deliver edge-on lamellas, high film crystallinity, small effective hole masses, and decent operational stability. The detailed structure-property-device performance relationship will pave the way toward high performance semiconducting polymers using the potent Q-D-A strategy.
