Simulation and Modeling Concepts for Secure Airspace Operations

With the expected advent of new entrants including Unmanned Aerial Systems, Commercial Launch Vehicles and Urban Air Mobility aircraft, the future United States National Airspace System will have to evolve to include their operations along with the current commercial, general aviation and military operations. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration are working together to provide a vision for aviation operations in the future—2045 and beyond. Their National Airspace System Horizons initiative seeks to provide stakeholders a list of operational scenarios and technologies, concepts and strategies needed for supporting that vision. They have identified cybersecurity as one of the seven strategic interest areas for realizing this vision. Consequently, NASA is studying cyber resiliency for secure airspace operations. This paper examines cyber security vulnerabilities of Urban Air Mobility operations. While there are many pathways to attack a cyber physical system such as Urban Air Mobility, their effect is expressed in modification or corruption of data/information used for controlling vehicles and making operational decisions. The paper describes cybersecurity technologies of Encryption, Blockchain, Virtual Information Fabric Infrastructure, Trusted Platform Module and Anomaly Detection for protecting the data, thus, improving the cyber resiliency of the current and future air traffic management system.

"Intelligent Ensemble" Projections of Precipitation and Surface Radiation in Support of Agricultural Climate Change Adaptation

Earth's climate is changing and will continue to change into the foreseeable future. Expected changes in the climatological distribution of precipitation, surface temperature, and surface solar radiation will significantly impact agriculture. Adaptation strategies are, therefore, required to reduce the agricultural impacts of climate change. Climate change projections of precipitation, surface temperature, and surface solar radiation distributions are necessary input for adaption planning studies. These projections are conventionally constructed from an ensemble of climate model simulations (e.g., the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5)) as an equal weighted average, one model one vote. Each climate model, however, represents the array of climate-relevant physical processes with varying degrees of fidelity influencing the projection of individual climate variables differently. Presented here is a new approach, termed the "Intelligent Ensemble, that constructs climate variable projections by weighting each model according to its ability to represent key physical processes, e.g., precipitation probability distribution. This approach provides added value over the equal weighted average method. Physical process metrics applied in the "Intelligent Ensemble" method are created using a combination of NASA and NOAA satellite and surface-based cloud, radiation, temperature, and precipitation data sets. The "Intelligent Ensemble" method is applied to the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 anthropogenic climate forcing simulations within the CMIP5 archive to develop a set of climate change scenarios for precipitation, temperature, and surface solar radiation in each USDA Farm Resource Region for use in climate change adaptation studies.

Optimal Traffic Signal Control Using Priority Metric Based on Real-Time Measured Traffic Information

Optimizing traffic control systems at traffic intersections can reduce network-wide fuel consumption as well as improve traffic flow. While traffic signals have conventionally been controlled based on predetermined schedules, various adaptive control systems have been developed recently using advanced sensors such as cameras, radars, and LiDARs. By utilizing rich traffic information enabled by the advanced sensors, more efficient or optimal traffic signal control is possible in response to varying traffic conditions. This paper proposes an optimal traffic signal control method to minimize network-wide fuel consumption utilizing real-time traffic information provided by advanced sensors. This new method employs a priority metric calculated by a weighted sum of various factors, including the total number of vehicles, total vehicle speed, vehicle waiting time, and road preference. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used as a global optimization method to determine the optimal weights in the priority metric. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a traffic simulation model is developed in a high-fidelity traffic simulation environment called SUMO, based on a real-world traffic network. The traffic flow within this model is simulated using actual measured traffic data from the traffic network, enabling a comprehensive assessment of the novel optimal traffic signal control method in realistic conditions. The simulation results show that the proposed priority metric-based real-time traffic signal control algorithm can significantly reduce network-wide fuel consumption compared to the conventional fixed-time control and coordinated actuated control methods that are currently used in the modeled network. Additionally, incorporating truck priority in the priority metric leads to further improvements in fuel consumption reduction.

Coupled SAM/Griffin Model of a Reference Fluoride-Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor for Multi-Physics Simulations

A multi-physics coupled simulation model of a reference pebble bed fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (PB-FHR) has been developed with SAM and Griffin computer codes for transient safety analysis. The reference problem of a prototypical reactor design serves as the foundation for the U.S. NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) to verify the adequacy of computer codes and evaluation models for specific reactor types. In this work, the previously developed SAM model for PB-FHR primary loop has been updated for the coupled simulation. The updated SAM PB-FHR model includes a 2-D axial symmetric core region and external core components in 0-D/1-D. In addition to the primary loop, a detailed model of the RCCS (reactor cavity cooling system) is added. The 2-D and 1-D domains are tightly coupled using the single-solve approach developed in SAM. In the pebble bed region, the SAM multiscale explicit pebble model is applied to calculate the pebble and TRISO fuel kernel temperatures. The Griffin model used in this work is based on a model developed at Idaho National Laboratory in collaboration with the U.S. NRC. The Griffin neutronics model and SAM thermal hydraulics model is coupled with the Comprehensive Reactor Analysis Bundle (CRAB or alternately BlueCRAB) application. Both steady-state and transient scenarios are simulated to demonstrate the model's suitability for multi-physics simulations of PB-FHR transients.

Adaptive Determination of the Optimal Exchange Location in Wall-Modeled Large-Eddy Simulation

Wall-modeled large-eddy simulation introduces a modeling interface (or exchange location) separating the wall-modeled layer from the rest of the domain. The current state-of-the-art is to rely on user expertise when choosing where to place this modeling interface, whether this choice is tied to the grid or not. This paper presents a postprocessing algorithm that determines the exchange location systematically. The algorithm is based on a model for the error in the predicted wall shear stress and a model for the computational cost, and then finds the exchange location that minimizes a combination of the two. Here, the algorithm is tested both a priori and a posteriori using an equilibrium wall model for the flow over a wall-mounted hump, a boundary layer in an adverse pressure gradient, and a shock/boundary-layer interaction. The algorithm produces exchange locations that mostly agree with what an experienced user would suggest, with thinner wall-modeled layers in nonequilibrium flow regions and thicker wall-modeled layers where the boundary layer is closer to equilibrium. This suggests that the algorithm should be useful in simulations of realistic and highly complex geometries.

Automatic mathematical modeling for real time simulation system

A methodology for automatic mathematical modeling and generating simulation models is described. The models will be verified by running in a test environment using standard profiles with the results compared against known results. The major objective is to create a user friendly environment for engineers to design, maintain, and verify their model and also automatically convert the mathematical model into conventional code for conventional computation. A demonstration program was designed for modeling the Space Shuttle Main Engine Simulation. It is written in LISP and MACSYMA and runs on a Symbolic 3670 Lisp Machine. The program provides a very friendly and well organized environment for engineers to build a knowledge base for base equations and general information. It contains an initial set of component process elements for the Space Shuttle Main Engine Simulation and a questionnaire that allows the engineer to answer a set of questions to specify a particular model. The system is then able to automatically generate the model and FORTRAN code. The future goal which is under construction is to download the FORTRAN code to VAX/VMS system for conventional computation. The SSME mathematical model will be verified in a test environment and the solution compared with the real data profile. The use of artificial intelligence techniques has shown that the process of the simulation modeling can be simplified.

Impact of Polymer Rheology on Gel Treatment Performance of Horizontal Wells with Severe Channeling

Summary Gel treatment has been a cost-effective method to control the conformance of a reservoir with severe heterogeneity problems. The water channels in such reservoirs can be classified as open fractures or high permeability porous media with pore-throat network. Many simulation studies have been conducted to discuss gel treatment performance for conformance control. However, nobody considered the polymer rheology difference in open fractures and porous media in simulation. Previous simulation studies also ignored the residual resistance factor as a function of rock permeability rather than a constant parameter. In this study, a conceptual simulation model was established to simulate the linear flow system for the reservoir with horizontal wells considering the two factors mentioned above. The results demonstrate that the gel treatment always provides the better placement results in the open fracture type channel than pore-throat network type channel. Moreover, it is very necessary to consider residual resistance factor as a function of permeability, which is based on the experimental results and can provide much greater plugging efficiency in the higher permeable channels than constant residual resistance factor. Sensitivity analysis studies and multifactor analysis indicate that increasing oil viscosity and permeability ratio has a strong positive influence on conformance control results, which indicate in-situ gel treatment can be better applied in heavy or viscous oil reservoirs with fracture-like channels. Besides, the results also indicate that in reservoirs with severe channeling problem where channel velocity was high, the differences of gelant placement and profile improvement in models with two different types of channels could be enlarged greatly.

A simulation-based model studying monoethanolamine and aprotic heterocyclic anion ionic liquid (AHA-IL) mixtures for carbon capture

Capturing of waste CO 2 , particularly from large industrial point sources, is necessary for either permanent storage or CO 2 utilization. Amine solvents used for carbon capture have certain drawbacks, particularly the high energy required by the reboiler for solvent regeneration and degradation of the amine with absorption/regeneration cycling. These challenges may be overcome using ionic liquids (ILs) that can be tailored for operating under typical flue gas stream conditions (8–10% CO 2 , 18–20% H 2 O, 2–3% O 2 , and 67–72% N 2 ). ILs, however, oftentimes suffer from high viscosities, leading to diffusion limitations when compared to amine solvents. This work models the combinations of aprotic heterocyclic anion ILs (AHA-IL) with monoethanolamine (MEA) and studies the carbon capture effectiveness of these mixtures. Furthermore, this study found that all AHA-IL/MEA mixtures exhibited 32 % lower enthalpy of reaction (compared to MEA) and 64 % lower viscosity (compared to AHA-IL), which are desirable characteristics for CO 2 capture solvents.
